After The Storm...or is It over?

This week has been mostly spent indoors.  We had a terrible windstorm on the weekend but fortunately kept our power on, unlike many others. We have a generator so are not worried about prolonged outages, although since we bought it we haven't had to use it.  Other parts of the island also got slammed with snow....we missed that and just got a skiff.
Wednesday Morning

Wednesday night 9pm, 1 foot on the ground

This morning, the wind and rain has melted/blown it off the trees

Then Wednesday came and Mother Nature decided to drop 1.5 feet of snow in about 8 hours.  Needless to say everything around here has come to a grinding halt and many are currently snowed in.  All schools and the college is shut.  Everyone needs time to shovel out.  We shoveled twice yesterday(my back seems to be much better) and would have been fine but a grader came by and plowed about 2 foot of cement-like snow at the bottom of our driveway this morning.  Hubby shoveled Buddy a path around the bird feeder to do his business as he only stands about a foot high.  His hair also gets thick with snow quickly as unlike a regular dog's fur his hair seems to glom onto wet snow.  Right now it is rain snowing, not sure if it is going to freeze or not but the temperature is well above zero so I am hoping it just takes some of the snow away.  I spent the last few days rotating hummingbird feeders as the temperature was just cold enough to start freezing them and our hummingbirds were hovering around them every day all day.

It is wonderful to have a warm bed and a full fridge.  We also have heat no matter what as have a natural gas fireplace and natural gas hot water tank and BBQ so even if the power goes out and we don't feel like starting the generator things are still fine.    We helped our neighbor shovel out her driveway as she is a widow and it would have sucked to have to do it by herself.  We work from home in our business, mostly web conferences and telephone calls so no need to go out and I made sure Mom was well supplied before the storm hit as well.

Just after I typed that our power flickered and our heat pump started to make a terrible racket.  We had it serviced 6 mos ago but it is just about the age where it is going to go one of these days, a super expensive bill but fortunately, we have funds if that happens to replace it.

Anyway, that's my week.  I've also been painting this week as prepping and detail work is my job.  I don't love winter, even here but do feel fortunate that is so very rare when we actually get winter-like weather.  Stay warm and safe everyone!

  1. I always loved the first big snow but it's even more lovely when you don't have to go out in it isn't it, and you're safe and snug at home!

    1. Past history of many power outages means being prepared - I have heard horror stories and don't wish to live through that.

  3. We are supposed to get a big snow, perhaps 8 inches, but with the cold and with blowing, they anticipate it being a horrible mess. I hope it lets me get home with the dog, groceries, and stuff to just bake and stay home until Sunday.

  4. Isn't it always the way....you prepare and buy a generator for the "just in case" and then you don't need it. lolz

    1. Yes, but it is kind of like an umbrella, I take them around and never end up using them.

  5. I envy all that snow. It never snows here. Ok maybe every 10 years or so it does.
Glad you can easily function even if you lose power. We bought a generator several years ago not for snow and ice but for tornado season. We used to lose power for days and would lose the contents of the freezer. Since we bought it we have not had one day of protracted power outages, though last week we had terrible winds and a deluge with thunder and lightning. Our entire neighborhood except for the "new" section was out. (New is a subjective term. New is only 30 years old vs. old which is nearly 60 years old)

    1. It only snows a couple times a winter here and usually goes away within a week or so. Last February was really snowy. I hope this storm was all that we shall see this year. We do have a ski hill up the mountain that usually gets snow from October - March so we can always see snow if we want to

  6. The snow is very pretty to look at. I will look at yours, since i will not be getting any at all. I hope you keep the electric and stay warm.

  7. TBG has tossed out the idea of a generator as he gets them at cost, but we rarely lose power. I don't know about you, but I kinda like being snowed in. We live on the same street as the town garage/depot the plows come from. We get our driveway plowed in multiple times during the day. It's important to shovel all the snow from your driveway to the right side so when the plow comes through, they don't keep putting the same snow back. Sometimes there ends up being a huge pile and I hope it doesn't end up in the neighbor's drive way. But I can't complain because our street is always plowed.

    1. We also have the generator in case of "the big one" earthquake since we technically live in an earthquake zone but haven't felt anything since we moved here. They don't do snow removal here (they did in alberta, shot it into the back of trucks and hauled it off) so when we get a big dump there were many areas where 2 cars could barely fit down the highway at the same time

  8. Are those arborvitaes? They sure do give you a nice private backyard and they look pretty with snow on them. We've had freakishly warm and humid weather this past week. No jacket required. Everyone is complaining about it except us. We love it, but this morning it's back to the chilly temps.

    1. Cedars. They grow pretty big here, they can't handle extreme cold but since ours is pretty warm they thrive here. In Alberta if you wanted them to live you wrapped them in burlap each fall. We had them trimmed a year and a half ago but I think we will need to do it again by next year. I love the warm weather, I'd enjoy it too!

  9. Wow. It’s so beautiful ... from this distance. I used to love that kind of weather when I didn’t have to get to work.

    1. Yes, they shut all the schools but everyone else had to try and make it into work - except us who were working warm and toasty from home :)

  10. Yikes that's a lot of snow for your area. We're finally crawling out of the deep freeze so I expect the snow won't be far behind.
Glad you were well prepared to deal with it.

    1. We only get it 1 or 2 times a year although last time it was less than a foot at a time, this was truly amazing how much it snowed in a short period of time. Living by the Ocean does that.
