My Feathered Friend

This is one of the little hummingbirds that hangs out in my backyard.  I took this picture this morning between storms.  We woke up to no snow on the ground but it started snowing about two hours ago so before the day is out I shall whip up a new batch of hummingbird juice and once again be shoveling.  Tough little buggers.  I wish they would fly south for the winter but there are always a few who stick around for our normally warmer winters.  I put away my feeder in August to encourage them to migrate but put it out again in November when I realized they were sticking around all winter.  There are three that show up and buzz Buddy in the back yard on a regular basis. I am not sure but believe this is a female.  The boys usually are a bit more colorful.  To get a closer view click on the photo.

  1. How cool is that. Our Hummingbirds all migrate in October or early November.

    1. They definitely do migrate in almost all of Canada. Vancouver Island is the only place I have seen them stay over winter.

  3. I love hummingbirds, although that is one chubby hummingbird! The ones near us are so thin. My grandparents were obsessed, and had multiple feeders outside their house, so they could watch them flit back & forth.

We have no snow, but endless rain. I'm happy the drought is being erased so quickly, but . . . so.much.rain!

    1. That is usually our winter. This year no rain, just snow. I prefer the rain.

    2. Ditto, you don't need to shovel rain. Shelagh filled our hummingbird feeder yesterday as well. Nice picture...

  4. Your picture is beautiful! Do you know Waterloo university has a lot of Canada geese, refusing to go south for winter? They will get angry at the students while guarding their eggs.

    1. Likely the weather there is better than here where they normally winter. We get snow geese and swans too...they are all wondering what the heck is up with all this snow.

  5. The closeup version shows the bright green a bit better - could be a girl, but then again....? I like the arrangement of the twigs - has a sort of oriental feel to the composition.

    1. I didn't realize that! I was amazed they stay here year round although next winter we may see less of them after this winter

  7. Our friend in Pitt Meadows has hummingbirds showing up as well. She was shocked but fortunately is filling her feeder as well. Enough of this stupid white stuff. We feel stuck, not to great for exploring all the trails here in Port Alberni.

    1. Supposedly it should all be over by tomorrow with warm rains hopefully melting some snow...unless it gets colder then freezing rain, yuck. My Mom hates driving in this kind of weather so today I am taking her to the store in our truck, she hasn't left the house in days!
