Cabin Fever - The Worst Winter Ever Edition

Not to keep blathering on about the crappy weather...but...we now have over 3 feet of snow.  This is our back yard this morning.  Every bit of that snow has come down since last Friday as there is green grass and buds on my flowers under that snow.  Every night I bring in the hummingbird feeder and every morning I put it back out, brushing snow off it every few hours.  The hummingbirds are still coming every day to feed so I am sure they appreciate it.

We have a lighter work week thank goodness as we have spent a huge amount of time shoveling this week.  Two hours this morning which included help from another neighbor.  We then brushed off our trees to attempt to prevent damage to the cedars and trees at the front of the house due to the high water content in the snow.  It is so heavy it broke a snow plow's blade in town this morning.  We also unplugged all the neighborhood drains (that took 4 neighbors trying to figure out where they were as hidden under the snow).  It is ice raining right now.  I fully expect to lose power today but it appears BC Hydro crews are busting their butts to keep power/get power back on all over the island and surrounding islands with many outages. They even shut down our Airforce base CFB Comox to all but essential services  No garbage pickup today and police are asking people to stay home.  All schools on the island are closed and many businesses have shut their doors today to prevent their employees from having to come in.

It is supposed to be plus 6 degrees Celcius by midnight but I find that very hard to believe.  It changes from rain to ice rain to snow every half an hour so we expect to be shoveling again soon.  I carried Buddy out at 6 am to do his business, he doesn't understand why the snow is so bloody deep.  Keeps trying to walk in it and realizes very quickly that's not going to happen.

Yesterday morning, however, things were quite nice again with a 1 day break between storms so I picked up Mom (she hasn't left her house in 6 days although we shoveled her out) and we went to the grocery store and thrift store.  I have one supper planned if we have power and one supper planned if we don't and are using the BBQ only.

I feel the need to bake something, perhaps some comfort food - chocolate chip cookies anyone?  I am extremely thankful that hubby is not out traveling somewhere on business or scheduled to go somewhere.  We have lost no business due to this whereas many local businesses are suffering.  Our neighbors had to fly to another Province several days ago before all the snow hit for a funeral, they are supposed to be trying to fly back today.  Five households have been shoveling their driveway as well trying to keep a handle on it for when they get home.

This certainly brings neighbors together though, we figure we need to have a party when this is all over to celebrate surviving the worst winter Comox has ever seen.  In the mean time, the three of us are snug and warm and the fridge is full and the showers are hot and best of all THE ROOF IS NOT LEAKING!!  I am so glad I got all that sorted out before this hit.

  1. I know it is horrible but it is really beautiful! Hoping you keep your power and this will be over soon. I know you count getting the roof leak repaired as a huge bonus. Talk about a test load of the repair!

    1. It is pretty, just hoping we have no tree damage from all the pretty white stuff :)

  2. So glad your roof is fixed too. That would have just been the icing on the shit cake this week and who wants cake? lolz

  3. Wow! Makes me feel bad complaining about the 15 inches we ended up with today in Connecticut! And, hurray that the roof repair is holding!

    1. Fifteen inches sucks too - we just normally never see that kind of snow here which is why it is so shocking. When I lived in Alberta we got lots of snow but it was over an entire winter, not in 7 days

  4. I also live in a snow belt. So eager to see an end to this Winter!

    1. Except I live in a rain belt where it normally snows once a winter, this is only a weeks worth of snow!

  5. It's been years since we had snow like that - nice to look at but a bastard when you're trying to live a normal life.
We've got snow today - not settling but icy cold but the wood-burner's on and I'm determined to go out tonight in a strappy dress regardless. xxx

    1. This was a 50 year storm, set records for snowfall. And today, just like that it is plus 5 degrees celcius and everything is melting - yaya!

  7. And here we sit with hardly any snow after our small snows, then melting. I'm sick of winter for another reason-the blah gray and dull. I won't wish for a massive storm though-not fair to all of you experiencing it. Nice neighbors-I bet they really appreciate it.

  8. Shelagh and I have decided to apply for permanent residency in Mexico. The weather may have had something to do with that...

    1. Good for you guys! I think alot more Canadians will be going that way or at least wintering there. I've heard that many who normally go to Arizona are coming home early and planning on not going back based on the current political climate there.

  9. Dour hedges were in trouble before we left Langley, a month away with all these storms I think they will be done, eighty feet of a hedges! They were left too tall by the gardeners and as we are way at the end of the complex they get forgotten. So sad. We are also done with the snow!
Just read all highways leading in the lower mainland are closed, crazy out there. Our little doggy is brilliant in the snow but he is starting to have a hard time as the snow has a crusty layer that he is breaking through. He looks a little drunk as he staggers about. Cheers

    1. It warmed up here overnight, snow slowly melting but all gone from the trees. There was a warm rain and that did the most of it. Still way too slushy to take the dog for a walk without losing him in a snowbank. We play lasertag and ball in the house but he loves walks and is completely bored.

  11. I agree, worst winter ever, so glad I am in Mexico. Good idea to brush the snow off the cedars. We had to do that in Vancouver a few times.

    1. Overnight it warmed up, most of the snow is off the trees. Appears very little damage, a few of my rhodos are broken off but they grow fast so I am not concerned

  12. Oh my goodness, I would just hate that. We normally should get snow but zilch. It peed down last weekend so the mountains got their snow thankfully as the spring break tourists are starting to arrive, but down in town (I'm at 800 metres) nothing. And long may it stay that way as I hate driving on the stuff. Good luck to you. Anna

    1. It finally stopped snowing and the melt is on. Unless we get rain though it will take a while to melt it all. Roads are much much better now

  13. And we were down here sweating our butts off hustling our wares outside. Can't we just trade weather on a day-by-day basis, when you're tired of shoveling give it to us, when you're tired of sweating we switch ;) Hope it gets warmer and better soon. Eat those cookies!
