It has snowed a foot and a half since 7 AM Friday morning. This picture was taken out our front door on Saturday morning. It is Sunday and has snowed another half foot since that picture was taken. We are sore and tired from shoveling. Buddy got stuck on the side of the house this morning and I had to rescue him as the snow is over his head in many places and he refuses to do his business on the snow so he was trying to find a green patch on the side of the house and couldn't get back. We shoveled him a path for that but he prefers grass.
This is the 4th snowstorm of the year, odd since we only usually only ever get 1 snow a winter and sometimes nothing at all like the year before last. Fortunately we are two healthy individuals and both of us are home, unlike last time when hubby was away on business. Today I will go shovel Mom out, although they have not plowed her condo complex so she is going nowhere. She only lives 2 blocks away though so in an emergency can call us or if she needs something we can go out and get it for her.
The hummingbirds are again hovering over the feeder in the back yard as all their food is again covered up. They eat bugs and there are usually some natural sources of food this time of year so they stick around.
We did manage to put the garage back together as hubby fixed all the holes in the wall and repainted this week. There is no water from the snow where there was previously so the new roof vent fixed the leak, the snow test was passed. Our flooring has been ordered and will be here in 3 weeks but we can't have it installed until March 10th due to our busy schedule and business already booked, so my kitchen is still torn up with the stove in the middle. I am getting used to it now, it is just nice to have a stove to use again.
We are supposed to get a few more inches over the next couple of days so I imagine we will be getting our share of exercise. Others have lost power, a friend was without power for 8 hours on Friday but ours only flickered. We have backup batteries handy, lights and candles and no matter what can cook on the BBQ, have heat from the fireplace and have hot showers due to those being powered by natural gas. My only worry would be getting Mom over here as she is 100% electricity dependent and that the food in the freezers would spoil if it went on too long. Hoping that will not happen. Stay warm everyone!
Wow that is a crazy snow you are having! When I lived in Ohio, it was sometimes like that...no snow and then get slammed. So nice you live close to your mom and can help out as needed.
ReplyDeleteWith being right on the Pacific we usually get a ton of rain in the winter, but the weather has been colder this year and brought the wet snow instead
DeleteWe have a very long farm driveway, attempted to get out yesterday with no luck. Looks like we are staying put until it clears. Our pups remind me of springbok deer as they jump through the snow which is up to their shoulders.
ReplyDeleteIt might be a while, although not much snow forecast until Wednesday here now then another 5-10cm. A good reason to always have lots of groceries on hand.
DeleteWe're getting relatively little snow. It's come just I'm inconvenient amounts, just enough to screw up commutes and get a back ache shovelling.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like everyone who normally gets harsher winters is not this year and those who normally get off easier are not this year
DeleteWinter in Canada...never again.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I can easily see spending winter in Mexico every year later in life (maybe sooner :))
DeleteSo much snow! It hasn't snowed in our area in 15 years, although it's definitely colder than usual this year.
ReplyDeleteYou moved far enough south!
DeleteIt looks so idyllic until you think about travel, and friends, and power, and heat, and work, and shopping, and... Wishing you an easier time!
ReplyDeleteIt is idyllic around Christmas time but now...not so much
DeleteThat is an amazing amount of snow. I guess I should be happy that all I had to do at the lake was deal with fallen leaves.
ReplyDeleteI would take leaves over snow any day :)
DeleteI'm hoping we won't be stuck south of the border. Trying to fly Pacific Coastal home on Tuesday. Even harder than the flight my be driving north to Vancouver to get on the plane. But I do enjoy snow, having grown up in Southern California. - Margy
ReplyDeleteI imagine by Wednesday you might see your flight not affected. Supposed to be another dump on Wednesday though so likely you will be spared
DeleteWow! so much snow there. I am lazy and accusing snow as the reason for staying inside.
ReplyDeleteI like hibernating too, a reason not to go out
DeleteSo glad the roof repair passed the test. That's a lot of snow! Are you enjoying Stranger Things? I am considering getting Netflix because Hulu and Amazon Prime are both carrying the same shows and lately there is nothing to watch.
ReplyDeleteWe are enjoying Stranger Things. Netflix has improved so much since several years ago, their catalogue is huge now. We have Amazon Prime Canada just for the shipping for our company but they only started streaming videos here last month and have a very tiny catalogue, not that impressed. I believe the fee we pay for Netflix is totally worth it
DeleteLooks like the worst is done. Chilliwack got the worst of it with 78cm of snow. The Hope Prinston hwy is closed due to avalanche danger. Hopefully in another day or two this will be history... It's nice for your mom to have you near...
ReplyDeleteIt looks like Wednesday we will get another 10-15 cm but that is it. I was supposed to go to Nanaimo that day but just rebooked my appt for 2 weeks. I am so sore from shoveling!
DeleteIt really is crazy weather. I just read that Chilliwack has had 78cm of snow since Friday.
ReplyDeleteThe totals are crazy!
DeleteOur son was doing army stuff in Chilliwack this weekend and they all had to eat the individual meal packets, survival food as the catering truck could not get through.
ReplyDeleteThe dog we are looking after loves running and leaping in the snow but we have to be careful of snow balls sticking to his fur. We hope when we leave next week we have a safe drive home. We are not out of fresh veggies so we may have to hike to the store if this keeps up. Snowing like mad here in Port Alberni this morning. CHeers all and be safe.
It just started snowing here after I read your comment...I was so happy to see no snow on the ground when I got up this morning :( I was thinking about you guys wondering if you know where all the flashlights/snow shovels were in the house you are sitting
DeleteThe hummers are still staying around?? Ours come in late April/early May into Colorado (by Memorial Day, at the latest) and leave by Labor Day. It's almost as if they get a memo...it's that consistent.
ReplyDeleteWe typically see some leave in November (I stop feeding them in late Spring so they can eat natural food/bugs) but the rest stick around all year as we rarely get snow. These ones are especially hardy but in November I put the feeder back out for those who stay. I wish they would go though, I worry about them, but somehow they keep warm enough
