I am just back from dropping hubby off at the airport for a 7 night business trip. This morning I made a two page list of all the things I would like to accomplish while he is gone. He asked me why I always work myself to death when he is away getting things done - the answer is easy. We work full-time from home and I find it difficult to do large projects when he is here. When he is away I can leave a room half torn apart if I run out of energy one day only to finish it the next.
He can't stand the house torn apart like that so I tend to wait until he goes away on business. I also don't cook full meals for myself - today's plan is eating up leftovers in the fridge. Often I will eat cereal, a quick BLT or have breakfast for supper versus spending an hour in the kitchen cooking dinner. Yes, having a spouse means I eat much healthier well-balanced meals when he is home versus when he is not :)
I also will be expending a lot of energy taking care of Buddy. As he is 4 months old now he goes on a few less potty breaks but lets just say I have about 100 by myself until he gets back. There are also walks and playtime. Anyone who thinks it is easy to have a puppy is mistaken - they are sweet and cute and fun but LOTS OF WORK!
I get caught up on home life these times as my work-load for our company is less when he is not here -things like carpet cleaning, fridge, microwave and stove cleaning, yard work and some Spring cleaning tasks that need to be done. Thank goodness it happens a couple of times a year so I can do all the chores!
I'm the exact same when my husband is away!!! I eat quick simple meals and try to tackle huge tasks that are so much more manageable when he is out of the house. I wish you thee absolute best with your 2 page list during these next 7 days :)
ReplyDeleteOn the puppy front, I once heard a big group of moms talking about how much more difficult it is to raise a puppy than a baby. At the time I didn't have any kids but had quite successfully raised two puppies so I was quite proud of myself. Anyone who thinks it's easy to have a puppy is crazy!
I have never had a baby myself, met my 4 stepkids when they were 5-12 but - hubby said the same thing! We have wanted a dog for quite some time so keep reminding ourselves of that fact lol
DeleteDogs are SO great though! They're worth all the work :)
DeleteWhen hubby is away I have dinner earlier, and get to bed earlier. .. aaaah.
ReplyDeleteJane x
I do too - plus can read in bed more which I like to do. I ate supper at 330pm yesterday lol
DeleteI love when my dh does away on a business trip - usually just two times per year. But I do just as you do - tear it all apart!! Enjoy and keep busy.
ReplyDeleteYesterday I did half the carpets by steamcleaner, today I move the kitchen table and do the other half. I am ok with things being left torn apart for short periods...hubby not so much.
DeleteI totally agree that when you have the house to yourself, you can call your time your own as well. My problem though is iI usually have more ambition on paper than in action. I think we have dealt with our last puppy-now almost 4. If we ever get another dog, it will be a grown rescue dog with very good manners.
ReplyDeleteWe would have done a rescue if possible but no hypoallergenic dogs ever come available and hubby is extremely allergic. This will likely fulfill all our dog wishes for the next 10-15 years :)
DeleteI get more done when I'm on my own, my husband probably thinks the same. I found myself looking at puppy ads the other day. At least with a young dog you can start the way you mean to go on.
ReplyDeleteYou are right - he only learns his bad habits from us :)
DeleteI was just thinking the other day I miss having time alone at the cabin. When we were both working, sometimes our holidays didn't match, so we would go up the lake for some alone time. Now that we are both retired, we are pretty much together 24/7. Not bad, but is sure did like those days when I could do anything (or nothing) as I saw fit. - Margy
ReplyDeleteI think everyone needs space once in a while. He likes getting out and doing group training and I like hanging back and getting our house in order, reading, and eating whenever I like :)
DeleteI'm like you. I'm much more productive when left on my own in the house for several days. We just met our friends new puppy (Dachshund mix). She is adorable and ... I DO NOT ENVY YOU THE WORK THAT'S REQUIRED!
ReplyDeleteCats are easier, I have had several kittens and other than being mischievious and a little destructive with their claws they are much easier and sleep a lot more.
DeleteI have a list like that too. Sigh, it is not a fun list. How about we start making fun lists. A cocktail? A massage? Yes, my list is better.
ReplyDeleteDen doesn't travel for his job so he gets suckered into my little projects. Poor guy.
There are cocktails in there lol - even went to a movie!
DeleteI did the same when Kazi was away for 10 days - didn't buy any groceries, just used up what was hanging around. It was great!
ReplyDeleteThe only groceries I need to buy are some veggies and fruit right before he gets back - plus any great loss leaders on meat :)
DeleteHappy Spring Cleaning! You are so lucky. The calendar says it's Spring but it is still -17 celsius here ! BBBRRRRR!
ReplyDeleteOur winter feels like Spring all the time lol. There are lots of flowers in bloom - soon in Quebec - I promise!
DeleteI'm actually the one who goes away on business trips -- and as near as I can tell, DH eats a lot of ready-prepared food (unless I leave something cooking for him) and mopes around a lot. He does NOT clean or tidy up -- I get to do that after I get home!
ReplyDeleteDarn, don't you wish he did :)
DeleteWhen Jon's away I eat loads of garlic, drink loads of wine and crack the heating up that's if I'm not out on the town with the girls! Hope you get everything done but remember to have a bit of fun, too. x
ReplyDeleteI love that you eat garlic :) Definitely having a bit of fun too - no worries
DeleteI feel you on being a work-a-holic, I'm the same way. Working from home there's no set work hours to stop you, it's easy to literally work every waking hour. I too destroy the place working :\ booo
ReplyDeleteWhen he is home I am lazier and spend lots of time cooking lol.
DeleteWow! Lots of comments! I guess us girls like some alone time to get things done. I remember once hubby went away to visit his dad for Father's Day. I started ripping down wallpaper before he was a mile away. It turned into a huge job that required skim coating all the walls, sanding, priming and repainting. It took me all summer to finish, but the end result was worth the mess I made.
