We had another huge storm last night/this morning with rain pounding so hard against our windows at 6am I don't actually recall a worse storm. We just kept in bed as fortunately hubby had no firm telephone appointments and Buddy crossed his legs so he didn't have to go out. By 8 am it was sunny and calm, very weird for this time of year. Today is the day where I am about 60 recovered from treatment and so hubby suggested we take Buddy for a walk. It was a slow one and the only picture I took is of this very beautiful but very potent mushroom growing in my front yard. I looked it up for fear it was poisonous, but it is just hallucinogenic, called Amanita. So pretty yet so unpleasant.
My big excitement for the day this afternoon is driving to pick up Mom then doing our contactless grocery pickup - they put the groceries directly in your trunk (Superstore) and then off we go to Mom's to sort which are her groceries and which are ours.
Is anyone else getting really tired of trying to figure out what to cook? We have been doing takeout about once every 10 days now, it is safe here to do that but both hubby and I are kind of sick of cooking. We were craving steak but the weather turned bad and hubby didn't want to go out so we had oven-roasted sausages and vegetable fried rice last night. Still good but not what we were craving.
And don't even get me started on grocery pickup - most of the time something is incorrect on the order or something super simple like blueberry bagels are not available?!? I want my damn blueberry bagels! Oh well, such is life these days. Thank goodness we work from home and only deal with this on a minute scale. Tonight I am truly hoping they have the pasta and sauce I ordered or supper might be yet another tuna melt (something I am craving right now. If you buy more than 3 of any veggie or fruit expect it to be off by the time you eat it. There has been a learning curve with hubby and him going to the store (other than our big grocery pickups) with $4.99 deli meat and paying $9 for 4 apples of which he was completely appalled by. Yes, our grocery bills have taken a hit but at this point who cares, we are only spending on food and medicine.
Anyway, I have a bunch of medical appointments this week and next so that keeps me busy and oddly sane since that is the only time I leave the house. Today's walk involved dodging too many families and young people so next time we take a different quieter route.
This weekend's plans involve perhaps making a pot of chili with cheese or cornbread and a drive around town to look at Christmas lights. It seems this past weekend many went up in our neighborhood as people try to bring as much warm and joy to their neighborhoods as possible.
Yet, I have 10 bananas sitting here, and bags of apples in the refrigerator. Nope, fruit will be eaten. Yes, I am tired of thinking up what to cook! I am pulling out a frozen turkey leg, frozen cooked carrots and making a green bean casserole. Those are the easiest things to put on the table. With this abscessed tooth, easy is what I need. We also took a short drive to look at Christmas lights. I think we will do that about twice a week from now on.
ReplyDeleteYes we hope to go many times to look at the lights this year. I can only eat bananas when green and need my magnesium so we keep buyig them...but I don't waste them. They are sitting in the freezer waiting to have muffins made

ReplyDeleteI keep you in my thoughts, thank you for posting and sharing how things are proceeding. I was always so grateful for the 2 or 3 days just before my next chemo so I felt like I could eat something, read a bit, walk around ok and feel sort of fine (7 years ago).
I am the grocery shopper in my family (dancing distance) and grateful I can go out. Rest of family stays home. I am so grateful the mall where I have booths opened again in June and I am so grateful the movies are back buying set decorations again and that shoppers have returned (all safety rules are in place). I am so grateful that movies are shooting in Ft. Langley - people are working!
Anytime I see people working on the roads, hydro lines, building, repairing, cows heading for their milking time ...I celebrate as I drive and I am so grateful people are working.

Yes, our economy can't just shut down. I do wish the schools would but agree with keeping other things open. Things won't get better if our businesses don't keep their doors open

DeleteI stocked the fridge over the weekend, and made: enchilada rice, keto chili, stuffed acorn squash & my husband made salmon. We'll have that throughout the week, because I have no energy after the week day.

DeleteI'm so grateful to SG for doing all the cooking. And, yes, some days he's just really tired of it. He gives me two or three options and I pick one. If it weren't for him, we'd be on our 300th night of frozen pizza at this point.

DeleteI hear ya! My kitchen and all appliances are in tears because they have never been worked so hard before. I am also sick of having to cook too. I do order takeoot every nce in a while but, I am mostly scared to do so. I can pretty much make anything at home except for sushi. So, I have limited my takeout to mostly sushi and chinese food. These days, my freezer is very well stocked so, before the New Year,I should eat out of that so I can make some space for my big New Year feast. I usually make a Thanksgiving Menu for teh New Year. I do not celebrate Christmas but love the decorations and the music.

DeleteYes, I think we're all just trying to survive (physically as well as mentally) in these times our world finds itself. Now the "experts" are saying that shopping is the one single activity that is spreading the virus the most... so people don't even have a quick trip to the grocery store as they're little "outing" to keep them sane. Yes, I'm having a hard time figuring out what to cook but that's not unique to the pandemic. We've never eaten out much and have been married for 44 years so those two facts alone are enough to make cooking a real bore sometimes! ~Andrea XOXO

DeleteOh, I so agree with the tiring of cooking. I haven't done this much cooking...ever. I did meal plan when I was in university when the kids were small, but that was usually a simple meal followed by leftovers, soup, sandwiches, etc. When I returned to work, I did a lot of cooking on the weekends and we ate from that over the week. My repertoire has gotten more variety since then but still I'd like someone else to at least make the decisions. Thankfully my son will eat whatever I put on the table. :)

DeleteWe ate in 90 percent of the time but could leave the house for other things...now not so much. We had olivier canelloni in vodka sauce last night, ok at best but better than takeout. The salad was better. Tonight it is toasted cheese sandwiches and tomato soup.....or coconut shrimp. Since food is one of our only joys there is much discussion as to what we eat each day
ReplyDeleteI don't think my dishwasher has ever worked so hard!!! I don't mind cooking at all but the "enthusiasm" comes and goes. Last night I made stuffed chicken breasts and they were delicious, but it is hard to come up with ideas sometimes. Thankfully my son will eat anything!
ReplyDeleteHubby is pickier than I, in times past he would drive to the store for a single ingredient, we don't do that anymore so hes had to be more flexible and I have had to order in a few premade items just so we have more we can choose from
DeleteIt's hard to stock up on any fresh produce. For one thing, it's not all that great, and like you said, if you buy too many, the last few go bad. We just had that happen with some avocados. As for things being wrong/missing or substituted in your order, well, at work there are some things we just can't get sometimes and they don't come in for a couple of weeks. We have been out of Mrs. Dash. I think production is down all over and you're lucky if you can get what you want it seems. People are stocking up and/or hoarding stuff. The shelves are getting thin again at my local grocery store. It's alarming. Forget about paper towels and TP is again hard to find. Today I made Beef-a-Roni for 400 at school. Salad for dinner tonight. lol

DeleteIsn't it crazy that going out to pick up groceries has become a highlight in our lives. Then there is the cooking. I try and do a menu plan for the week ahead so that I can have all the ingredients on hand. I was so tired of cooking and with the fence fiasco that we just went by the seat of our pants. I cooked last night and today I have a fish chowder in the crockpot. Getting back on track. Pasta is a favorite. Yum to your coconut shrimp, reminds me of Mexico. Do you make it or buy something prepackaged. If the latter I would love the info.
ReplyDeleteprepackaged, if I found the right recipe I might attempt it but it is such a big thing in Zihuatanejo right now I am trying it from M&M, Costco(from a few months ago) and Superstore. M&M is good if not expensive.

Jon does most of the cooking here and enjoys it. He loves grocery shopping as well - I think that's the hunter gatherer in him.
The spread of Covid seems to be coming from supermarkets round here. Jon sticks to his list and leaves but loads of people treat it as a family day out, spending hours in there as the non-essential shops have been closed for a month!

I wasn't sure if you were coming out of lockdown or not. Snow! Holy Cow. That is sad about the supermarkets. Here so far they are pretty safe. Most of our cases are in the lower mainland near Vancouver...right where I have to go to the hospital but we will be safe as possible even though we have to be there 2 days early. No wandering around. We now know where we are going and what takeout is available and where the hospital is from our hotel. I understand families not having childcare but what drives me is when they manhandle all the produce.
