The Little Things

So the medication seems to be working.  After a week I can drink tea again without consequences.  I have to take a pill twice a day but can eat again.  Food is still not my friend but I am no longer losing weight, think I've regained a pound.  I am back to 80 % of my health and that is wonderful.  We did get the test results back and it showed no bacteria from ulcer - very weird. Blood tests were fine too.  Who knows what caused this gastritis (anything relating to stomach that they can't assign another name to) but hopefully it will go away like it came.  I still think it was directly related to having an open abcess in my mouth for 3 months from a half done root canal and the dentist shutting quickly due to Covid.  Anyway, it was lovely to be able to pour my cup of tea (in thrifted mug from several years ago, set of 3) and actually be able to enjoy it this morning.  I've also been testing the waters on different food after cutting out so many foods.  Good news, one of my 3 favorite food groups (chocolate, wine and cheese) I can still eat.  Dairy does not seem to be disrupting anything so I had a tuna melt the other night in celebration.  I still don't want to attempt eating out and am staying clear from anything tomato-based or deep-fried but things are really looking up.  My Dr wants to keep me on this medication for 4 whole weeks so time will tell.

Mom desperately needed out of the house and so did I so yesterday I picked her up and we went to 2 newly reopened thrift stores.  One is not great on setup so I am not sure I will take her back there but the other there was lots of room so we picked up several books to round out what we have been getting for free at the Little Free Libraries.  There are zero cases on Vancouver Island now for 4 weeks, likely to change as soon as tourism opens up but for now it is safe for Mom to be out more so we will go the odd time.  She felt comfortable and so did I.  And yes, we wore our masks even though it is for others protection more than our own.

I discovered a new app as mentioned by a few other bloggers named WTForecast.  It is free (with ads) or you can pay a small fee.  It is funny.  Be warned if you download it - it does swear so if you don't want that don't download it.  Maybe even google it to see more images.  This image was one from yesterday and is one of the tamer ones.

Hubby received some devastating news about his cousin's son this week, death by suicide.  He was mid 40's, had a family and was a financial planner in a small town.  Hubby was able to watch his private funeral via facebook which was strange yet comforting at this really weird time.  And the man's teenage son did the eulogy and directly addressed mental health and suicide, what a strong kid.  I never really knew him, only met him once but hubby had just seen him at his Aunt's funeral in February.  Very very sad and unfortunately another Covid collateral victim.

The weather has been lousy again this week, but it appears if we can make it to Thursday we are in for several days of sun and much warmer mid 20's weather.  It will be a good time to go kayaking and regardless of how little energy I have I want to go, even if we just float and don't paddle anywhere.

Today I might do a little painting until I tire, I tried the other day and lasted a half an hour but need to finish a small spot (no I won't overdo it) that requires a small brush and patience (my husband lacks in the patience department).

Have a good weekend everyone.  Stay safe!

    1. Thank you Rachel! I hate being sick (don't we all lol) but life is so much better when I can act like an upright human versus a bed ridden one.

    1. Thank you - I am sure many families are dealing with the same thing right now unfortunately. Difficult to have great mental health in such a dark time in history

    1. Thanks so much Susie. The tooth fix seems to be holding (the dentist said we'd know in 3-4 weeks and it's been 2). Hopefully the last of the really awful days are behind me.

    1. Yes, we all need a laugh these days! The best ones are when the weather totally sucks though lol

  6. Glad you are feeling better. We went to one of our charity shops last week. They were really on top of things. Very strict volunteer managing the door, admired her mastery of the position. So sad about the family member death. Mental illness is still poorly understood.

    1. Yes, the charity shops are desperate to get reopened. I heard the hospital thrift store is reopening this week, maximum 10 people at a time which is ok since it is 4 separate rooms. I shall wait a week or so though. Just going to 2 gave me a little thrifting mojo. If I can't travel I can still thrift!

  7. You have rebounded quickly. I know, more to come but still a huge improvement. Love that mug. If probably did both of you good to get out to the thrift stores.

The weather sucks, so tired of listening to the rain. I fear for our garden. The three pots that I have flowers in are so saturated that the plants are dying. I will look up that weather app even thought I don't usually do apps but I need something to make me laugh.

    My condolences to your husband.

    1. Yes, this is the worst weather year in ages for sunshine. I am hoping it breaks soon. I keep thinking the only additional benefit is a lowered fire risk....

  8. I'm glad to hear your health is improving. Going out in the kayak will be a nice treat.

My sympathies on the passing of your family member. Suicide is so difficult for those left behind.

    Take care and stay well!

    1. Yes, those left behind are devastated. I am sure 2020 will also be the year of suicide unfortunately. So much isolation and pain and agony, even those of us in good mental health have a hard time coping.

  9. It's good to read about you feeling healthy. I can imagine summer life on the island can be absolutely good for your health-I'll hope for you that the virus stays at bay.

    1. Yes, this is the best year ever not to live in a city and to have easy access to beaches (all are open now) and parks and a great back yard. A good way to recuperate

  10. I'm so pleased to hear that you're feeling better. Chocolate, cheese and wine sound like a good diet!
Recently an American woman posted a tutorial on how to make a cup of "British tea" on YouTube and it's gone viral here, it's even made the BBC news! She heats water in the microwave, adds milk, tips in some sugar, dunks the teabag for a few seconds and that's tea. Please tell me you don't make tea like that in Canada!
Very sad news about your husband's cousin, its heartbreaking to think that he felt suicide was the only option. xxx

    1. No definitely not. The microwave doesn't get near my tea, always a kettle. I drink Earl Grey every day after a proper steep. The only time I have ever made weak tea is the last week, trying to ease my stomach back into it :)

  11. So sorry for the loss your husband's family experienced.

I know you are ready to be back at the 100 percent mark, but I am glad you are at least partially there. I would not be surprised if getting stuck in quarantine with the abcess did not impact you greatly. Fingers crossed that this week is even better and you are up to your former self.

    1. Thanks Anne, I do think every family on the planet will experience loss of some kind or another by the time this is over, including yourself. Hugs

  12. So glad you are feeling better and able to eat and drink again. Hubby and I were talking about that show Alone and I was wondering if they were allowed to take toothbrushes with them because oral health is so important to ones' overall health. Turns out that on season 3 (which takes place in Patagonia), they do show us that toothbrushes are provided. No toothpaste though.
So sorry to hear of a tragic loss in your family. So sad.

    1. A toothbrush is definitely better then none lol. Yes, hubby took it very hard. So senseless except for the one who takes their own life and so much aftermath. His parents are numb let alone his wife and kids.

  13. Oh my word, how sad for that young man. Sadly suicide is a permanent solution to what is often a temporary problem. And how brave of his son to address mental health issues. I'm so sorry. But I'm glad you're starting to feel better. It's been a long slog hasn't it.

    1. It has been a long slog. I find myself looking forward to Christmas - just to get the needed mental break. Weird, isn't it?
