January Blahs

I haven't been posting much - have a case of the January blahs or blues if you want to call them that.  I hate this time of year.  I probably would have felt a little better if we had managed to get away on holidays in December like our original plan was, but that was not meant to be.  Perhaps it is because our travel wings have been clipped for at least another year or so.  It could be because I am mired in paperwork trying to gather all the bits and pieces together so we can go see the accountant to file our Corporate taxes (*think very complicated as we are a Federal Corporation so pay big bucks for him to take care of it).  So If I don't post that much in January - you know why.

I have been reading a lot lately - just finished The Falls by Ian Rankin.  He is a great author and the good news is I have only read a couple of his books so have many more to enjoy.  Scottish mysteries if you have any inclination. I managed to read 24 books in 2014 which was my goal - 2 a month.  I had to read a bunch in December to pull it off but due to the holidays I did manage to achieve the goal with about 3 days to spare.

I have tried thrifting this month but have found absolutely nada.  Maybe I am too picky or just not in the mood but usually thrifting brings me joy. I have been successful at grocery bargain hunting this month so that is a plus.  Yesterday I bought $45 worth of meat marked down to $20 at my very expensive grocery store that regularly puts out stickered meat on the last day to purchase.  I buy 90% of my meat there - not much else as it would break the bank.  Yesterday we enjoyed a crock pot roast with mashed potatoes, gravy and corn.  It rarely is on the menu as I refuse to pay $20 for a small roast.  This one was $10 and still a bit of a splurge as I usually try and keep meat to a maximum $5 per mean. The rest were chicken pieces which went into the freezer.

I also managed to score a bunch of cheap perfume as my normally expensive (for me) perfume that goes for $45-$60 for a 1.7 oz bottle was found at my grocery store in discounted Christmas packaging.  I bought 3-1 oz bottles plus 3 hand lotions for $3.04 each for a grand total of $9.12 for all of it.  They only had 3 and I bought it all.  I should now be set for the year for perfume.

My plans for this week are to start researching a local trip to Tofino.  You generally have to book months in advance if going in high season so we have to decide when we are travelling.  Possibly a 3 day weekend this Spring.  It is an extremely expensive place about a 4 hour drive from here so I would like to find a reasonably priced unit with kitchenette so we can self cater which we normally like to do anyway.     I am also going to contact our Bichon dog breeder as two batches of puppies should be born this month (any day now) and one with our name on it so hopefully I will be able to share some good news shortly.  We have been waiting since November.  Once they are born it will be a full 2 months before we can bring it home but something cool to look forward to.

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. I know the winter blues well. We had a string of cold days followed by gloomy rainy days. Finally yesterday it started getting nicer. Today is beautiful and hubby and I just took a long walk with Zoey down by the bay. I really needed that. We also have to see an accountant to get all our tax stuff in order. I'm dreading it but hopefully the result will be a tax refund. Hopefully, hopefully, hopefully. A puppy is definitely something to look forward to and I can't wait to see pictures!

    1. I am not positive about the breeder unfortunately. They are terrible at returning our calls. I am hoping things work out.

  2. I'm with you! Especially when we lived in Washington, it was a big challenge. Obviously, we get more sunshine now. We do really, really, really miss the accessible & easy skiing in the winters, however. It was such a part of our winters that it's hard now to envision a 4 hour drive each way +hotel + all of the cost of gear for just a couple of days. We haven't been able to justify it, & we miss it.

Hope you get a little bit of sunshine soon!

    1. Fortunately, we have gotten some sunshine. It seems like we get at least one day every seven or so so thankful for that.

  3. I am with you as well. January has been a let down or something. I feel blah and hubby asked me today if I was battling depression. Not sure.

    1. There are other things going on in our house so not much happiness here right now.

  4. We've only ventured to that side of the island once. We camped somewhere near the national park. It was beautiful, but rained the whole time. But we're used to that. Splurged and had breakfast at one of the fancy resorts. I hear watching winter storms is exciting. - Margy

    1. We are definitely used to the rain. I would like to see the winter storms. Still a four hour drive each way from here though. Maybe in February

  5. My hubby and I love Ian Rankin. I've only read Saints of the Shadow Bible, but hubby has gone through many of his books. There's a couple more unaccounted for in December, but I just checked and not including december I've gone through 28 books. Wonder how many I'll get through this year. It helps that I listen to a lot of them on CD. :)

  6. My winter blues is that I just don't feel like working anymore! And I had to return my winter boots because they became unglued.

Besides the polar vortex , we re organizing, giving and trashing.which is great and keeps us on target

  7. January is supposed to be the most depressing month of the year. It's something of an anti-climax after all the hype and hustle and bustle of Christmas.
You did well with the perfume - you could always give it as gifts and save more money.
    Hope you cheer up soon.

  8. I found a book of short stories (Rebus) by Ian Rankin over Christmas - otherwise I've read every one, most twice. He writes so intelligently and (I like to think) for intelligent people ;) I wish for you a day of sunshine to help you with the blahs but know those are far and few between. Sigh - the downside of winter!! (What's the upside I wonder??)

    1. Christmas is the major one. There must be others but I am grasping at straws here.

  9. fantastic sale finds, my friend! No winter blahs here in Florida, been thrifting like crazy, Right now in a really good time to shop, because people get rid of things that have been replaced for the holidays AND, the snow birds leave and they leave stuff behind from their winter homes down here. My son and I went to a shopping spree in a retirement city this past Saturday, and I blogged about it! But you northerners have way better garage sales! I don't even go to the garage sales here in florida. They suck so bad its not worth my time!

    1. Our garage sale season runs from about March to June for the good ones. Summer time ones generally are not that great.

  11. Congrats on the impending addition to the family!!!!
I haven't been in the mood to do much lately either. I hate this time of year but I shouldn't complain too much because it is 40 out. That is a heatwave for us!!!!

    1. The days are slowly getting lighter - that is a plus. The odd flower blooms here in February (crocuses) so maybe that will help get the winter blahs away.
