Crawling Out of the Hole

Checking in to say that since the last week I've been on a roller coaster.  The medication Nexium only takes the edge off and I've still been feeling very crappy from my ulcer.  I haven't been eating enough as every single thing I eat or drink comes back to haunt me, no matter what it is including camomile tea and rice.  I am trying to get my health back in order but have a feeling it is going to take a while.  I had exactly one good health day - that was on Friday.

I actually felt well enough to go for a walk so we took Buddy to a nearby park that has lots of trails including one down to the ocean.  It really does look like Jurassic park there, with lots of massive ferns that are between 2-4 feet high.  It is very green right now as we have  been blessed with rain every few days unlike other years where things have been super dry from draught conditions.  Buddy absolutely loves this park.  There were a few other people but everyone was very good about making way so you could social distance as you passed one another.  That sometimes meant going off trail to accomodate people.
So many thing to sniff.  You can see from the picture above how tall the ferns are.
In winter you can come here when it is raining and hardly get wet as the forest is so thick with trees and moss that soak it up, a true Pacific Northwest Rainforest.
Finally you get down to a rocky beach.  Again, only a couple other people and you all had tons of privacy.  I really want to bring a picnic down here this summer and have supper on the beach one night.  It is so peaceful.  This water is known as the Georgia Straight part of the Salish Sea.

Buddy actually looks like he is smiling in the picture above, he had a great day.  The sand crabs are out.  This little guy was on guard. He was about the size of a quarter and ready to take us on.
On our walk back to the truck we encountered one of these banana slugs.  This one was about 4 inches long.  Buddy didn't see him fortunately (he probably would have licked him - yuck).

Other than that I've spent a lot of time trying to get well.  My energy level is about 30 percent of where it normally is and I need to eat more but it is a vicious circle of eat, stomach upset, nausea and tiredness.  I am taking tons of OTCs to try and combat it but am talking to the Dr again tomorrow to see if there is anything more powerful than Nexium that they can give me.

I did the first pickup of the year from our local farm market - they are doing online ordering with curbside pickup only.  Here is my first haul - about $25 - and worth every penny.  Unlike so many other things their prices have not increased this year.  Seriously they gave me the largest head of romaine lettuce, monstrously huge for $1.95.  We also got new potatoes, small cucumbers, carrots, beets and from one of their fellow farmers in Washington some apples.  These small farmers help each other out.  They also sell peppers from a nearby farmer but we didn't need any of those.  Mom got a massive bunch of spinach for about $2.  So happy we have them as a local option this summer as everything else seems to have gone up in terms of groceries.

Even so, I stayed under our grocery budget of $525 in May ending up at $452.  This was mostly due to the fact that I felt terrible and wasn't shopping.  Fortunately I had full cupboards and freezer to pull from.  I am really really trying to be choosey what I buy now to try and stay on budget.  The one time I went to the store this week  I needed bleach but it got left on the shelf at $7.99 for 2 litres.  I can live without it until I find some cheaper.

Buddy went to the vet yesterday and got his full checkup.  The vet said he looked like he was in great condition and us treating him so carefully after his hip dislocation in September really paid off.  We also brush his teeth twice a week and she noticed.

I got my root canal done yesterday.  It was extremely difficult as I woke up very nauseous and had to down some gravol just to make it there. They took my temperature then the dental assistant aka Space Lady came to get me.   It was my dentist's first day back on the job.  He was very sorry he was unable to work on my during the closure.  They were wearing full white bodysuits, face masks with shields and N95 masks and hairnets.  I can only imagine what it must be like to work in that.  He actually had to take a 1-minute break partway through as his mask was hurting him.  We are unsure if the root canal will work or not, as the infection is in the bone and may not heal.  If that is the case the tooth will have to be ripped out, the bone scraped and I will need a bridge.  A specialist would do all of that.  Only time will tell.  My abscess has come back in force and hopefully, now that is gone for good.  All this poison in my body I am sure caused my ulcer but who knows.  The dentist said honestly he'd never treated anyone who had an abscess for 3 months (because we tried to fix the tooth right before the office closure) so it is possible.  Either way, I just need to try and heal up now.  If it wasn't my rear molar I would have probably just requested they pull the tooth at this point, but it is one of the most important teeth you chew with.

Between the root canal and vet visit, I spent $1300 yesterday.  Now I need to build the health fund back up as either will be getting a crown or a bridge down the road.  I was in a great deal of pain last night and resorted to using some of the Tylenol 3 with codeine I got a few months ago.  I generally don't take codeine as it whacks me out - but I ended up taking 2 then 1 more just to make it through the evening.  Fortunately, today I am just very tired from being drugged out and don't have any pain.

So yes, I am trying to slowly crawl out of the hole, mentally and physically.  I am heartbroken by all that is taking place in the USA right now.  This is what happens when you hand over the reins of a country to the worst possible person.  Then others think it is ok to behave in terrible ways and be racist because the President is so it must be OK.   Enough for today, I need to reserve some energy to go water my flowers and make my hubby a nice supper as it is his 58th birthday today.  Stay safe everyone.

  1. Oh my goodness! You have really been put through the ringer! I hope the root canal worked and that they won't need to pull that tooth. Our Zoey is due for her yearly checkup too and her mails are super long and need clipping badly! I have to call and make an appointment. You are so fortunate not to be living in the US right now. What a mess! I have thought of fleeing to Canada, but it's too darn cold. I used to worry about the future. Now I worry what will happen in the next 5 minutes, Geez! Stay safe and I truly hope you feel better very soon.

Buddy's nails were so long and our groomer opened up but she has such a long list of cancelled appointments we still don't know when she can do Buddy yet so the vet trimmed his nails for free (they do that only when you already have appt for something else. Yes, one day at a time for all of us. Thanks Lorraine

    1. I have a hard time at the dentist too, I cracked my jaw 20 years ago and can't open it as wide as they need, they had a heck of a time getting xrays without me gagging (salt works). Thankfully that part is over for now, I truly like I felt like I "survived" the day

  3. I've been thinking about you. I'm so sorry it's been such a struggle for the road to recovery. I have everything crossed that this treatment leads to a healthy turnaround, without the need to remove the tooth.

It's been a hard few weeks in the US. Hard to watch, hard to experience, hard to discuss with the kids. And I can't help but feel we've moved backward 50 years. I remind myself that progress isn't linear.

    1. I often think about you and your hubby's family and the situation in the USA. Such a freaking mess. I will be ok, just need to get healing. I am truly trying to eat things that will be ok or healing for my stomach, it may take months but I am prepared. I think the hardest part is no wine and chocolate for like FOREVER! It seems that way anyway

    1. Yes, we are blessed with beautiful places here. That is why we moved from Alberta, it is so much warmer and more of a year round climate here. I feel so lucky to live here.

  5. First off, I hope you're able to find some meds to counteract your ulcer, and that the abscess finally heals.

Happy Birthday to your husband. I'm sure he'll appreciate your efforts to celebrate his day.

Finally, I can only hope that the American people recognize that IQ45 cares not a whit about them, and everything he does and says is for his own benefit. If there isn't a civil war after all of his incitement of violence and hatred I will be surprised. Scary times!

    1. Yes, so scary. Many of my american relatives voted for him unfortunately and now are paying the price (not sure if they get it yet or not). I really can't see stepping foot on American soil ever again after all of this....we shall see

  6. Sharing your walk in the Pacific Northwest Rainforest and then along the rocky beach is much appreciated - I have never visited that area - how lovely to include it in your walk. So sorry you have been so ill. Hope the pain decreases, the root canal fixes the issue, your ulcer settles down and heals - and happy to see Buddy happy and healed. I am finding I can not write a post for tomorrow - the horror of what is going on across the border is heartbreaking. Keep getting better.
    Hugs.

  8. I take Protonix, prescription that is for same thing as Nexium. It works pretty well, but I don't have your problem, just terrific reflux. I don't think I have ever felt sicker than when I forget to take it or it just does not work that day. I don't know how you take Nexium, but I take my stomach med first thing and wait for an hour to eat and sit up the whole time. It is a real pain to follow those directions, but I get so sick that I am willing to do what I must.

Have you seen a specialist about your stomach and had an endoscopy? I see a gastroenterologist. Three months is a long time. Reflux will rot your teeth and cause esophageal cancer.

That was a pretty walk you took us on. Those ferns are huge!!!

    1. This is a relatively new problem so no I haven't seen a specialist, right now those are still on hold, will have to see what my Dr says first. I am sure it would be 6 months at least to see a specialist as they are so backed up after our closure due to the pandemic, things really just opened up June 1

    1. Yes, the ocean is all of our happy place including Buddy. I wish I could take him there every day. He loves chasing the small crabs, we have to be careful he doesn't pounce on them as they are so tiny that would be the end but he follows them around

  10. Oh, you sure are being run through the wringer. So, so sorry for all the struggles. Hope EVERYTHING improves... and quickly.

  11. I was hoping you would feel much better now. I am so sorry things are not improving greatly, but at least the root canal is done so you can see how that works out. Fingers crossed that it heals without further invasive work, and that the infection was the primary cause of your stomach issues.

  12. Oh my goodness, you have been through the ringer haven't you. My sister had terrible acid reflux for years and years and virtually lived on OTC medicines which weren't really helping. Eventually her doctor advised her to have part of her oesophagus (sp?) removed because of all the acid burning it away. She had it done about 3 years ago and it had the same effect as bariatric surgery. She lost 52 kg and while she probably had a good 30 kg to lose she didn't have 52 to lose!!! So she went through hell with acid reflux too but thankfully is doing so much better now. No idea what caused it (except maybe obesity in her case to begin with) but it sounds like your poor body has been constantly poisoned for a good few months now. I hope your tooth is now fixed and you can concentrate on regaining your health and strength! Take care of you!

    1. I weighed 144 lbs January 1, lost a couple pounds (I was trying then) and by March 1 weighed 140, now am 133-34 depending on the day. I've always loved food, it's terrible not being able to eat anything without issue = I love food!

  13. Oh my, it has truly been nightmare for you. Hopefully the dental work will help and you will not need further treatment. As to not being able to keep anything down that is not acceptable. There has to be something that your MD can do and hopefully he will be able to help you today. I believe that you need some tests to be done just to clarify what is happening. I was surprised last week when I spoke with my doctor to get a script and mentioned that Colin had an issue. She made an appointment for him to come today so she could see his problem in person. It is not a serious issue at all but she insisted. sending healing thoughts to your and some extra hugs.

Not the best birthday celebration for your hubby but a least you are together. I think a delayed birthday picnic next month with wine and chocolate involved is something to look forward to.

    1. Thanks Contessa. I made him the last of our salmon, dill sauce, rice and corn on the cob. It's what he wanted. At least I ordered his gifts online 2 months ago and they came in time for his birthday as I certainly can't shop in person right now. He is a trooper, fortunately he is in great health, especially since we moved his weights into the living room he is working out more than ever before

  14. You are being very stoic but it might be working against you. Do you have an appointment to actually see the doctor in person? I think it important to be seen, this has been going on way too long.
