Walk To The Duck Pond

I took a mental health walk with Buddy yesterday.  I admit to being a little overwhelmed with everything right now.  There is a fine line between needing to know what is important and information overload.  The weather was lovely and there were lots of ducks about.  Soon there will be ducklings as well.

These were taken with my cell phone but I've decided to dig out my digital good camera soon and start shooting wildlife again.  It is so peaceful and calming just to listen to them.  They thought we had food so a couple got out of the water to check it out.  Buddy doesn't mind ducks, sort of disregards them instead of wanting to chase them.  That is until they get too close then he gets nervous so we walk on.

We've had wonderful sunny days of late, a really beautiful Spring is coming.  It has gotten cold overnight though, almost to freezing which is unusual for us this time of year.

The flowers on the fruit trees are about to burst, such a pretty time of year when that happens.

They couldn't top coat our patio as it is not warm enough so it will be done in a month or two so we've lined up delivery of the patio furniture we bought back in January for Friday.  We also went out and bought some paint, plant seeds, potting soil and a propane tank for our new fire table.

I am interested in what is happening in other countries during this crisis so am going to describe what is happening in Canada to those who aren't living here.  All our schools are now shut, I believe in every Province.  Colleges have gone to online classes and exams for the last few weeks of term.    Most workers that are able to are working from home.  Non essential services are mostly voluntarily shutting their doors.  In most of Canada the Provincial governments have mandated that all restaurants, bars, casinos, rec centres, libraries are closed. Our places of worship are closed.  Only those restaurants that do take out or delivery are open with no seating available.  Anyone taking the ferries now is able to remain in their cars, previously banned due to safety issues but the rule loosened up by the Federal government due to the big C. Yesterday my hairdresser shut their doors, I was supposed to have a cut and colour so now will give myself a small trim.  I can deal with the grey hairs.  Our food supply chain is intact for now and I believe it will remain so.  The US Canada border is shut to all but necessary supply chain traffic, no cross border shopping or tourism.  All international and transborder flights from our two national carriers are ceasing in a few days.   Our government called all citizens home a week ago but it takes time to get people home.  I am not sure if there will be a total lockdown or not but we are prepared for it and are acting as if we already have one on.

Our clients are reeling so hubby has had many many video conference meetings this week and I've prepared ourselves and Mom as best I can.  No hoarding, just a couple of weeks worth of groceries.  Many dental offices were exposed at a conference in Vancouver 10 days ago so the Province mandated they all close and if it is a dire emergency they've organized a dentist or two that wasn't in attendance there to take care of them.  They found this out 1 day prior to my second appointment to finish my root canal so I really don't know when that will happen.  If things flare up I will call the emergency number.  In the mean time I called my Dr to get another antibiotic as thought it was getting infected again.  My Dr office is doing almost 90% phone appointments now and won't see you unless absolutely necessary.  I think that is brilliant and truly hope when it is over it continues.  With all the technology these days in person visits for minor things is really not required.  I was happy to see when I picked up my prescription they had the toilet paper behind the checkout counter and were limiting it to one per person.  They should have done that last week.  There are over 10 cases on our beautiful island paradise now.  They are really limiting testing to only those that may have been exposed and even then sometimes just telling people to self quarantine.  I do wish they would test more people but it is what it is.  Most people are being cautious but many still think that everyone is overreacting.  I disagree.  Tell that to those who live in Italy, Spain and France right now, 3 countries other than China that are on lockdown right now due to a high number of cases.  A friend has family in Northern Italy and for now they are ok.  They are happy everything is on lockdown, feel much safer that way.

My stepdaughter lost her job a day after my last post as bars were ordered closed.  She was pretty devastated.  She is 21 and had trouble understanding why they were shutting all the restaurants and bars.  We've been in almost daily touch with her and she is in a better mind set than a few days ago.  The government is expanding unemployment insurance to people like her who 10 days ago wouldn't have qualified with 2 part-time jobs and tips but now likely will.  In the meantime, the wine store she works at is still open and busy - she went from having 3 shifts to 6 this week.  Fingers and toes crossed they let that stay open.  We may need to help her out financially at some point but for now she is ok.

I did finally manage to get through and change our flights to Mexico November 30 - I am hoping things are somewhat back to normal by then and if not we shall simply toss in the towel.  Hopefully a third attempt will be the charm.

That's what is shaking on my little piece of paradise.  Stay safe everyone.

  1. I could say ditto to almost everything you typed. Interesting though, DH has had a lot of folks looking at cars-I suppose the low interest rates. I worry about him-then I worry about all of us. I'm worried about my son. He is financially OK until Mid May if no other work comes his way, but but doing his own projects potentially for money. We'll see how that stakes out-Hollywood will still go on in some fashion. I'm mostly worried about my sister who lost her spouse, and now is so reduced in hours as she is a restaurant worker.

    1. I do feel for our kids. So glad son #1 and his GF hadn't set their date for the wedding yet. All is up in the air until this is over. No flying for us until it is safe.

    2. And also I am so sorry for your sister. Not only losing your spouse but then the added stress of possible job loss and pandemic. It really can't get much worse for her, can it?

  2. It's totally overwhelming, so do take care of yourself. We took our neighbor's dog for a walk today & just got out to see the sky. I'm also going to work in the yard between meetings.

We're in shelter in place, so all services are closed & shut down, other than hospitals, grocery stores, etc. We are only able to leave the house for walks/runs, but maintaining social distance.

The kids have no school (likely for the rest of the school year) & while they've committed to providing some sort of packets for the kids, apparently we are on our own for the teaching of the content, as personal instruction (even remotely) seems unlikely. Can't imagine how we will swing that.

Grateful for our fiancial position, ability to help others, and our health.

    1. I wonder if you could do an ISO for on-line home schooling community in your community to share the oversight burden, and keep the kids connected to each other. Ca you tell what I try and help figure out all day!

    2. We're almost there on mostly volunteer basis but I'd rather see it enforced and mandatory. The kids will be fine as they have a loving Mom and Dad and get to see more of you both, in the end it will bring you as a family even closer together than you already are. Yes, we too are grateful for our financial position. It has been many years of being frugal and paying off debt and now more than ever we are in a position to help our family when they are unable to help themselves

  3. What lovely nature photos, a taste of Spring! You should definitely get your camera out and take some more pictures, we've all got plenty of time for hobbies at the moment.
Have a look online for something called "Nature Radio", its all birdsong from places all over the globe and is wonderfully relaxing.
It's a crazy world out there, if someone had told me that we'd be in this situation a few months ago I'd have thought they were mad! xxx

  6. I'm so sorry about your step-daughter's job. Seeing so much of that here. Your situations sounds like ours in the state of Mississippi here in the US. I work in a school and we are shut down until April 17 and then we will see what it's like by then. Strange times.

    1. Very strange times indeed. I'm pretty sure ours are closed to September, no saving the school year and things have moved online. My stepdaughter will be ok, so many others have no one whom they can get help from, I am so happy we are in the position to

  7. Meant to add...we live near a duck pond, too. Hoping to go check on the duckies one day soon.

  8. I love the photos of the ducks! We're to get nicer weather starting this weekend so I'm thinking I'll get back to my walks soon.

My family is more fortunate than most, my daughter is on disability and that won't change anytime soon, my son is home but his employer will continue to pay him at least until early April and then he has savings. I'm fine since I've retired so my income is what it is. We'll manage but I sure hope it is over in the next few weeks.

Take care, enjoy that patio and stay well!

    1. Fingers and toes crossed. Those with guaranteed incomes like disability and retirement funds will be saving the bacon of all of the rest of us, even if it is just in donations

  9. Shopping is an adventure here in my small city in Saskatchewan. One never knows what they will find. The workers are doing their best at keeping the shelves filled.

Oldest son is working on getting his classes online for his students, especially the grade 12's who need to write diploma exams in Alberta.

Youngest son will be working from home, not so much because of the virus, but because of his broken hip. WCB seems to think that mentally he needs the challenge.

My dental appointment for the end of the month has been cancelled, and my surgery will be put off until all this is over as we are only doing emergency and cancer surgeries.

    God bless.

    1. Between Mom and us I think we have good supplies but each week I will go out to the store and forage for what we can, mainly milk and fresh produce as we are good for canned for a while.

  10. Your Premier is doing a better job than our idiot. I am staying home except to take Teddy for a walk. I go on a path that is always empty and I've started to make an effort to take pictures (even with my phone) to note what is around me. Otherwise, I don't go out. A friend went to a park in the city and commented how nice it was to see so many people out -- I just don't get that! Anyway, she is a dear friend and invited us to dinner Friday. I shared this with one of your fellow country-women and she lectured me. Although I was already leaning towards cancelling. TBG still has to work as he is in an essential industry. I did offer to take a care package to my friend's father, who lives a few hours from us. I'm visiting the area because I have to pick up raw food to feed Teddy. We can't find anything and with her cancer, we can't switch her to dry food. A fellow raw feeder has two shelves of poultry in her freezer that her dog won't eat and wants to clear it out to fill with either rabbit or kangaroo (there's a hopping joke in there somewhere). We're driving there but not stopping anywhere. At this point, we don't have much choice.

TBG was stressed this evening, so we took Teddy for a walk in our neighborhood. I think it helped, but he is feeling the stress because he is out in the world every day. He worries about his staff a lot, but they are responsible and not taking risks either.

Can't wait to see more of your pictures!

    1. It's hard not to be stressed at this time, over things like money, family, friends, groceries, our business. All we can do is the best we can do but fresh air does help. So do doggies.

  11. How lovely to spend some quiet outdoor time with wildlife. Hopefully we will continue to be able to do that. My next door neighbors spent all day out fishing. I really hope this will all be over soon but sadly I think it's just the beginning. Stay safe.

  12. Thanks for stopping by the blog and commenting. Since we have been Snowbirding in the RV I've been writing over on my Margy Meanders blog. I try to keep only the off-the-grid posts on my original Powell River Books blog. We are doing well in Bellingham south of the border. We have what used to be Mom's condo so have a safe and comfortable place to stay. We worried that Powell River's limited health services would get maxed out quicker than here. It was good to hear that you and your mom are safe and have what you need to get through this. - Margy

  13. Just want to let you know that I am reading each one of your posts. I also appreciate each of your comment to my posts, especially your updates. I was happy to learn today that when we are on our 14 day self isolation that we will be able to go for walks. Still looking for TP and some food items. Here in Vegas the shelves are empty.

Love that photo fo the buds getting ready to burst open.

    1. Yes, even if we go on full lockdown our Health lady Bonnie (she has a large fan following now) believes people should be able to go walking with appropriate distancing of others. Thank goodness for that.

    1. Yes, I just wish they would do a full 30 day lockdown and get it done. Some people are just not paying enough attention and it is going to hurt us all because of their actions

  16. I'm on day 5 of lock-in and so far it's ok. The only thing that may be different over here is that we have to have an attestation on us every time we leave our homes. We can download them from the French government website so it's no biggie but without it we get fined. My neighbour was saying it was stupid but I think it just shows that you have been on the site and should, in theory, know what the government is recommending. I went out shopping yesterday and the fruit and veg shop was fully stocked - just wonderful. The main grocery store I would say was only about 50% stocked but you could still get everything, including toilet paper. We've been told we're in lockdown for 15 days but I can see that being extended. In the end I think it's the right thing to do though. I'm lucky that I don't have to worry about money as I'm retired. As for kids, my oldest and his wife in Switzerland will be working from home, my youngest has plenty of work but they can't get their supplies from Italy but so far so good, he's still working. He should still get 70% of his pay even if he can't work though. And his wife is a nurse so there'll be no unemployment there. I do worry about her health though as there is nothing of her to begin with. I also hope, when this is all over, that the powers that be remember just how much the emergency workers have given and give them a bloody big pay rise!
