Bad Hair Month

We had pushed Buddy's grooming until this week as originally this is the week we were to fly away to Mexico and he was supposed to go to the groomers (owners of his parents) for dog sitting.  It wasn't to be so we rebooked an appointment for grooming.  Thursday I got a text saying the groomers was closing.  As poodle hair continues to grow without shedding it was necessary for us to do a small trim so he could see again as his eyebrows were hanging over his eyes.  Poor dog, now he looks like a 5 year old got at him with some crafting scissors.  I also gave myself a small trim too but am not sharing that photo :)  Hubby's up next.  He is so picky and yet wants me to try trimming his hair as we both were scheduled for haircuts last week and now that's off indefinitely.  I am a little scared about that one.  I have ordered thinning scissors from Amazon (for all of us) but who knows when they will get here.

We absolutely killed ourselves this weekend getting the yard into shape and washing off crud off our old patio set and BBQ.  It is done, no photos of the new furniture until we get a sunny day as it is raining right now and they are tucked away under cover.    On Friday I started manically cleaning, first the pantry, then the fridge, then the entire house.  I even cleaned out the cupboard under the sink where we store the garbage, it was nasty.  Apparently, I am a stress cleaner.

I placed my first online order for groceries - I will pick them up Thursday then deliver Mom's portion to her.  I will do this every 10 days or so now.  I decided to go with Superstore as they have the best prices, and hopefully, they will be able to fill most of it.  I did notice for each item after it is in your shopping cart there is an area for notes next to the item if substitutes are ok.  I put in alternates to almost every item.  They were booking for 6 days out even if you pick them up yourself.  I also noticed that I can add items up until the day before pickup so I will add items now as I remember them.  Their website is very slow and up and down with so many trying to order online.

Yesterday I had to go to the pharmacy to get a couple items I can't add to my grocery order for both Mom and our household.  Mom needed distilled water to clean her cpap machine so I ended up at 2 different pharmacies to find it.  Pharmasave had closed all sections with tape except the medical ones and only had one cashier and pharmacist on.  They also had a big sign in the window that they had no toilet paper.  It was weird.  At Shoppers Drug Mart a few aisles were bare but there were still a few boxes of tissue left as they had no toilet paper either.  We are good for a while and Mom has 28 rolls as 2 weeks ago we were shopping and they had a sale so she bought a gigantic pack.  If we run out we can access her stash.  I hear now our grocery stores intend on installing plastic shields around their cashiers and most are asking you not to use cash.  That is ok for us but difficult for many who only use cash.

I had to kill a few minutes before doing a pickup of plants at my friends house so stopped and looked out at the estuary(where mouth of the fresh water river meets the Ocean).  Our sun is now gone and it was a cold rainy day.  Still pretty but grey.  And yes, our mountains still have lots of snow up there, I believe it was still snowing there yesterday.

I visited my friend (in the yard) and picked up a couple of packs of petunias and one other flower I am not sure the name of, that is all she could get before her greenhouse closed up as the other annuals are not ready yet.  It is too early to plant them so now I have to nurse them for a few weeks until it warms up.  It was sad to say goodbye as I am sure it will be a long time before we see each other in person again.

Work is slowing now as to be expected.  Once it stalls our next project is to finish painting the house.   I have lots of other small projects to get to as well.  I have 2 plant stands and a metal table I need to spray paint as they are starting to rust.  I bought the rustoleum paint last summer but haven't gotten around to it so that is a priority.  I am going to clean the black scum that homes in the Pacific Northwest get around the windows and in the sills.  I have a photo scanning project that never seems to get anywhere and a whole bunch of shredding to do for the company as well.

My stepdaughter is texting me right now.  The liquor store where she works has just given them a $3 an hour raise.  Apparently, Canada feels that liquor stores and pot shops are essential services so they will remain open even if lockdowns occur.  Now she is afraid of getting the virus and wishes they would close.  I don't know what to tell her.  She is caught between a rock and a hard place, needing the money to survive yet not wanting to get sick.

We have a platform called Zoom for our business, it is a video conferencing app.  We pay $20 a month but they also have a free version which limits time per call.  We decided we are going to try and do family zoom meetings once a week until this is over as the kids and us are spread between 3 time zones across the country.  Those who are at home will be on the call.  This will give us all hopefully a bit of comfort as we can't see each other and not everyone has apple phones to face time.  This also means we can all be in on the call at once.  Thank goodness for technology right now.

As I said to my friend yesterday while standing 15 feet apart, this is the year where everyone will have a whole lot of time and no money or no time and a lot of money if they are an essential service.  Strange times indeed.

  1. I am going to cut my hair today. It always looks awful when I do it. But, people like it. I think it looks like one of those chunky cuts. Tommy needs his cut, too. Thinning scissors ruin my hairdo. I cannot find my hair cutting scissors, so I WILL be using craft scissors. Seriously! Good luck.

    1. We used regular scissors too. Everyone is going to look similar soon :)

  2. Can your child at least wear a mask and gloves or use hand sanitizer. I posted a link for best material for using in masks.

    1. They are using sanitizer - masks are simply not available here nor have they been for months. They are all being given to the medical workers which is as it should be. Our government is in control of the entire healthcare system so they ensure the masks go there. She is doing the best she can for right now. I hope her youth will protect her health in this case as she is only 21

  3. Skype and FaceTime has certainly helped us stay connected with friends and family. I've been productive these days but nothing like the whirling dervish you've been. Since I've been shaving my head (or buzz cutting it), I decided to let it grow during lockdown. I'm sure I'll end up shaving it again when this is over.

    1. It will probably drive you crazy after a couple weeks :) I am trying to do something productive every day. Some days work keeps us busy, but it is starting to slow, although we do have one small new contract for a couple of weeks, thankfully

  4. As you say, thank God for technology and that you can all keep in touch. Not so long ago that wouldn't have been possible without expensive phone calls. I got my hair cut just 2 weeks ago but I can see cutting it myself shortly too - although I do that anyway so nothing much will change there. We should all get those pudding bowls and do identical cuts don't you think!

    1. I remember so many kids had bowl haircuts in the 1970s, me included. Actually back then many Mom's did haircuts, such a lost art. I've watched the hairdresser enough times I kind of have an idea on how to do parts of it although I think the sides and back will be grown longer. I'm going for the mullet look

  5. I was hoping my husband would let his hair grow until long enough for a pony tale but since my success in cutting the dogs' nails he has decreed I am qualified to do his hair. I have to be in a bad temper to get in a cleaning frenzy-my husband is always nervous if he finds the bathroom squeaky clean, thinks he must have done something to tick me off. Tea is my panacea for stress but I'm having to ration as it is the only thing we are low on and I will wait for a grocery run until I need a bunch of things. Despite the worry this is a good opportunity to get longstanding chores off the list. Keep up the good work.

    1. Yes, all those jobs nobody has time for now will be done. I've just heard they consider hardware stores essential services, I guess in case things break. I really don't see that in a total lockdown though. Anyway, if we must we can do a hardware store run although we picked up most of what we needed last week.

  6. I'm done painting for now, so the cleaning is next on the docket. You sure got a lot done in a short time period. I'm guessing it wasn't that bad.

Hope your step daughter stays well. It is definitely a concern working with the public since there are covidiots out there!

    Take care and stay well!

    1. Some of it was pretty dirty, others not so much. I am glad we are going to do the final painting stretch, it requires two of us to help each other so has been put on hold as the business was so busy. We still have business but it will be not as busy now.

  7. Skype has certainly helped with work. Buddy is still adorable, and I know about the poodle hair coming out a mess as it grows.

    1. His ears mat so easily too, we have to brush them every day and still found a little mat underneath we had to cut out. I am so thankful we have him in this time, a definite stress reducer.

  8. I purchased clippers and a doggy dryer weeks ago and have been grooming Teddy myself. I do a little each day. I wish I'd started this sooner. She needs a bath 2 -3 times per week and I have to blow her coat each time. TBG asked me to try clipping his hair too! Hey, I have the clippers, I might as well try it. I have hair cutting scissors which I use to cut my own hair, and I'm using them now to trim hers too. Nails are trickier as she acts as if I am stabbing her to death, so we rely on our walks to wear them down.

At this point, I have recouped the price of both the clippers and the blower by forgoing just one grooming appointment.

    1. Very smart! A poodle cut is very complicated and we are always amazed how she cuts almost all the hair off his face, feet and body. We will never get to that level, just will do minor trims once a week to try and keep it under control.

  9. What a lovely scene!
Poor Buddy! I'm sure I had a haircut like that when I was about 5!
Thank goodness Jon shaves his head and I stocked up on dye last week before lockdown. I've been known to go for years without a haircut but Jon's pretty good with the hairdressing scissors if needs be.
We're all going to have immaculate homes and show-worthy gardens by the end of Summer! xxx

    1. Yes we are! I did some minor gardening yesterday and it felt good, even if it was only to start my seedlings and separate some strawberries so they can expand. We are going to have strawberries and tomatoes no matter what!
