Since it is a tiny bit too early to be shopping on driveways (garage sales) I have been prowling the 24 hr facebook bidding site and found this 3 cup Proctor Silex food processor for a whopping $5. I told myself a while ago if I found one at a low price I would buy it. It now is spic and span after a good cleaning in my cupboards. I intend to make a pie for my Mom for Easter with homemade crust since she has been observing Lent by giving up sweets. I have tried to make pie crust before, it turned out ok at best. Apparently the easiest/best way is with a food processor which I've never owned. This one holds three cups. I own another minichopper, Cuisinart that hubby got me for Christmas one year. It is awesome for chopping things like garlic and nuts but doesn't work for larger recipes like salsa (although I have used it for that, just chopped all ingredients separately) and pie crust. I've tested it and it works, and for five bucks definitely a price I can live with.
We all have Spring fever here as the sun is shining, the birds are singing and we are experiencing absolutely lovely weather. Sorry for all those still experiencing snow, but it has to stop at some point. Next weekend we travel to Edmonton for a family birthday party and likely I will have to dig out a much warmer coat as night temperatures are still quite low.
This weekend we were originally invited to a St Patricks's day party at a pub but it got cancelled so we are going to have a BBQ instead and invite Mom over for a movie night. I spied corn on the cob at a decent price so will pick some of those up - hopefully it won't taste like cardboard as it often does this time of year.
Have a great weekend everyone - and stay away from the green beer!
I've got a Proctor Silex Device for popcorn making; great device and great diet snack!
ReplyDeleteSpring fever which includes declutter and cleaning starts this month and lasts till end of April - depending on location, weather and the possibility of open windows. In my neck of the woods it's March, as Passover holiday falls at the end of the month.
I have been decluttering too, I've done our closet and hubby went at our garage. We are not really pack rats though, I find it pretty easy to cut loose things that we no longer use. Passover is at the end of the month (I just meant I was waiting for Easter weekend to try it out, don't have time to make a pie until then :))
DeleteWould you believe it’s in the 80’s here today in Texas with the low tonight of 62? It had been in the 30’s at night since we arrived in the country!
ReplyDeleteI love my food processor and I paid about what you did for it. Why buy new when you can buy at Goodwill and places of resell?
Happy St. Patrick’s Day tomorrow. I’ll be cooking a roast with veggies and watching the trees green up! They get greener every hour it seems!
Wow, that is nice and warm. Likely Spring is lovely in Texas. I have never been but hope to get there one day
Delete5 bucks for a working food processor is a great price. I have never made pie crust in one. Maybe that is what I am doing wrong because mine are never really flaky.
ReplyDeleteI went driving around this afternoon to witness spring. The dogwoods are blooming and so are the azaleas along with most everything else. The downside was having to wash pollen from the windshield every time I stopped the car.
I thought it was a good deal (I will take a chance on just about anything for the $5 pricepoint). We don't have our trees in bloom yet but lots of daffodils, snowdrops and tulips. The ducks are also looking like they are getting ready to nest at the duck pond, love baby duck season
DeleteIt’s snowing here as I write I don’t like it lol we’ve gone from what appeared to be the start of spring now back to winter I need to go back to Costa Rica I’m definitely a sun person. I make pastry all the time but I never use my food processor I just do it by hand and it’s always fine. Have a fun weekend
ReplyDeleteI am a sun person too, normally it isn't that sunny around here until April or May but we have had some lovely weather. Before you know it you will be back on Samos!
DeleteSalsa on pie crust is delicious (not really, I'm guessing). Jerry is expert at pie crust with or without special equipment. In explaining it to me one time he said it was easy (oh please)... and he actually said it was "easy as pie."
ReplyDeleteEasy as pie...said the master baker (not me) I do make a mean frosting though...does that count?
DeleteFrosting definitely counts! I've never even "made it" from a can!
DeleteCongratulations on the excellent purchase. Can't wait to hear how the pie turns out.
ReplyDelete24 hour Facebook bidding site? Do tell (please)!
Besos Sarah.
Our area has a Facebook group who runs 24 hr bidding auctions, lots of rules but great as if someone bids and doesn't pickup they get removed from the group. There are 9000 members in our area so most of the town is in on it :) Better than facebook marketplace and craigslist by far.
DeleteHave a great saint Patrick's! Today everybody is Irish... you're going to like your food processor!
ReplyDeleteWell, my background is Scottish and French, but yes, everyone is Irish on St Patrick's day
DeleteMy food processor bit the dust about three years ago and I ahve not replaced it. My Ninja blender works for most things. I'm too chicken to try hoemade pie crust anyway. Good buy though. If I found a great replacement deal, I might consder gettingone again.
ReplyDeleteIf I don't make pie with it will use it for chopping carrots up/coleslaw. I can see more and more uses for it now that I've got it
DeleteWe were at a pub today at 11:30 for lunch before a spring training baseball game and there were lots of people there already drinking green been. We didn't partake since we had a lot of sitting in the warm sun and didn't want to get a headache. - Margy
ReplyDeleteDrinking before noon is a sure sign of trouble lol.
DeleteWe're snowed in and our fair's been cancelled...again!
ReplyDeleteI've never made pastry in a food processor but there again I'm a trained chef! xxx
How did I not know that about you? For the rest of us apparently it's supposed to be relatively easy. I will test it out next weekend.
DeleteThat was a great deal. I am satisfied with bought crusts. However, some day I might try again to make crusts.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the premade graham cracker crusts but dislike storebought crusts
DeleteGreat find :) I haven't made pie crust in probably 20 years. I have my mother's recipe, which was amazing (she made two pies every Sunday back in the day) but I don't really bake much of anything anymore. My mother made dessert for every dinner but that's a habit I quickly cast aside when I left home. Too much work! Sunny here, no snow but still cool. Up to +10c yesterday - lovely!
ReplyDeleteI've only made it from scratch once :) I can't imagine having dessert with every meal, but I think it used to be very common. Hopefully you have seen the last winter snowstorm (but I wouldn't hold my breath)
