So we are currently experiencing a blizzard. It has snowed about 4 inches since 10am, just 5 hours ago. I've already shoveled the driveway and walks once as the snow here is like cement and sets up if left, not like the fluffy dry snow of the prairies. They had called for rain with possibility of some flakes then back to rain. Just a little bit wrong. We are prepared for winter, yesterday we had our cedars trimmed so they withstand the snow a little better. I had left my pots out but the snow won't hurt them. I took out the tomato plants midweek as we had our first frost on Oct 30th. I still have tomatoes ripening on the windowsill. We put winter tires on our vehicles the beginning of October, early but we got a great deal on an almost new set of winter tires for the truck and already had a set for the car. We rarely get snow here but the higher elevations on the island do and we sometimes have to travel over them and snow tires are required. In the five years we have lived here I have only seen one or two snowflakes in the month of November. If and when we get snow it is usually limited to December and early January.
Up until now the week was quite beautiful with falling leaves and sunshine. We got 30 trick or treaters for Halloween which was low I thought for how nice it was. Buddy was much relieved when we finally shut the lights off at 815pm - he was beside himself every time the doorbell rang. He fell alseep completely exhausted that night. We have too much extra candy to deal with but for now I have hidden it to keep it from our sight and tummies.

The picture below is my delicious thin crust homemade pizza this past Saturday night, not pretty but very tasty. I don't use a rolling pin for the dough, just my hands and a glass so they come out misshapen. We had ordered pizza from a national chain the weekend prior and it was expensive and barely edible - not making that mistake again. Much easier to either make it myself or when low on energy add ingredients to a prepared store bought one for less than $5. Cardboard would have tasted better #don'torderdominoes.
I fully expect there will be power outages and tree damage tonight so we may be making full use of the BBQ if we don't get through supper before that happens. It is so nice to have a heat source other than electric as we have a natural gas BBQ, fireplace and our hot water tank is also natural gas so even if the power goes out you can still have a hot shower.
I usually love November, as it is the month of which I hunt vintage Christmas crap at the local thrift stores but I sure hope today's snowstorm is not an indication of what our winter will be like. I will take rain over this anyday.

ReplyDeleteGood luck. Our number one goal in life is to never spend another winter in Canada!

Honestly, the first year we moved here we didn't even have snow shovels. It seems to have gotten worse every year. Mexico is likely a much better place to spend the winter, hopefully one day soon for us
DeleteCan you post the pizza dough recipe please.
ReplyDeleteSure, I will in my next post as the magazine article that I found it from has been taken down online, very easy though :)
DeleteYour pizza looks good. We prefer homemade ones to store bought thought we kind of like Domino's now and again. Maybe it's your franchise/store that's the problem.
ReplyDeletePoor Buddy, working so hard to keep those hooligans away. lolz
You're right, probably the franchise. We do have one excellent pizza joint here but it is a pub that is about a 30 minute drive away so no delivery :(
DeleteThat is a lot of snow. If we ever had that much snow, life would stop and there would be no bread, milk, eggs, or bananas. The French Toast people clean the shelves. Life in the South is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThe french toast people ha ha. Maybe it's the comfort food of choice during weather events
DeleteThey don't really make French toast, but what does eggs, milk, and bread make you think of.
DeleteI can't believe you had snow - that's awful. Well done for being so prepared though, our country comes to a grinding halt when we get any.
ReplyDelete30 trick or treaters? Madness. Could you not donate the extra sweets to a homeless shelter - better for the soul and the belly! xxx
Most people here don't know how to drive in crappy weather, that is the most dangerous thing about the snow. Other than that we can handle it although I don't like it. We rarely drop below zero so mostly get rain. The food banks don't like to accept halloween candy as not nutritious but if I have any left I will bring it to my Stepdaughter in Alberta on our mid-December trip, she would be happy to have it
DeleteThe snow looks so cold, but the pizza looks hot and delicious! We didn't give out candy because we didn't want Zoey to freak out. She's not good with people coming near the house. She barks her head off and scares them. It's a good thing on any other day.
ReplyDeleteYes, Buddy much prefers Christmas over Halloween. One of us stays with him in the bedroom and the other hands out candy. Hubby even took him for a walk during the busiest time so he didn't have to hear the doorbell ring. The day after we had workmen in the yard trimming our trees so he wasn't too happy about that either.
DeleteThe snow looks so beautiful...I'm sort of jealous since I love snow and the winter!
ReplyDeleteI can relate to Buddy's trick or treat patrol since we have a crazy almost 11 year old chocolate lab "puppy" who was beside herself with all the knocking on the door Halloween night!
I would love the pizza dough recipe too! And, for the record, I think less than perfectly shaped pizzas ALWAYS taste better! ;)
I'll be posting it, just have to dig out the recipe :)
DeleteWe are always pleased with our homemade pizza efforts. I always have crust ingredients and can pretty much use whatever we want and have for toppings. Chain pizza places have gone so down hill for quality. Occasionally we will get a Papa Murphy's take and bake-still pretty good and they have $5 large basics, and always coupons for more diverse toppings, so great for a crowd, but for just us, I'd rather make a decent frozen than order delivery. I fear a long and snow filled winter.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind ordering delivery if it was actually good but this was pathetic, likely the store though. I usually have a frozen pizza in the freezer but not that time and we worked all day Saturday until 6pm so neither wanted to go out and pick something up
DeleteBuddy's Halloween patrol picture is nice. Love him. If the trick or treat is on Friday, then more people will come, I think. We had only rain. You got snow already!!!
ReplyDeleteI know, shocking right? Hubby is off to Ontario on Tuesday, I hope it stays mild there for him
DeleteThe weather is often unpredictable and we , humans, have no control over it. That's why it's number one topic on our agenda.
ReplyDeleteYou seem to be doing fine with the preparations for winter; your actions are a good example of what should be done to avoid unpleasant weather surprises.
Winter comes every year, it amazes me how people wait until it actually snows to buy or change their tires
DeleteA light dusting in the lower mainland this morning. Hopefully the mercury will rise a bit soon. When it snows here we all get a bit insulted... Nice looking pizza, we buy the crusts at save on foods, a four pack for cheap!
ReplyDeleteIt's supposed to warm up this weekend, I don't think anyone around here actually thought we would get snow that stuck, but there are several inches on the ground even today. Sun is shining though!
DeleteWe endured the same storm, many flights were cancelled yesterday both in and out of the airport due to the snow combined with winds up to 70km. I have never ever seen snow like this this early before. Our RV sits out front covered in snow and icicles. It is -12C at 8AM. I will post photos later, meanwhile we will be loading the RV today as we freeze our toes and fingers.
ReplyDelete-12 holy cow! It is only minus 1 here, supposed to get up to 3 today. The snow has quit and the sun is shining again. Stay warm (or at least have a hot toddy at the end of the day)
DeleteI thought, "You have got to be kidding!" Then I realized it IS November 2 and you DO live "up north"!
ReplyDeleteOk, not really up North - the rest of Canada is supposed to get it, not us!
DeleteThe last few years there has been no rhyme nor reason to when we get snow. I'm not looking forward to it - well not looking forward to driving on it really. Yuck. Long may it stay in the mountains. And yes your homemade pizza looks lovely. Anna
ReplyDeleteI agree, may it stay on the mountains. We do have a ski hill here not too far away and they get tons of snow, will be opening early this year
DeleteI'm so glad to see that you did not lose power overnight. We got snow here this afternoon/evening and are expecting more tomorrow. Seattle apparently got hit with snow too and as usual, it is causing all kinds of problems over there right now. I'm sure my nephews are enjoying it though. :)
ReplyDeleteWe still have all the snow on the ground, now 3 days later but it is supposed to warm up today so hopefully it will start to melt. The kids love it, I saw lots of snowmen today, something that Island kids only get to make once in a long while
DeleteMy son's birthday was last week and we ordered in pizza from Boston Pizza....so disappointed! I agree, that a pre-packaged pizza with add-ons or homemade is the way to go, the other far too expensive and not nearly as good.
ReplyDeleteOh no snow! I expect it here - we had our four inches overnight, but as you say it is light and fluffy. My cousins both live on the island and have been posting photos - my last winter visit was January 2015. I didn't see a flake of snow that winter. Hopefully it doesn't last!
Boston Pizza is the worst in terms of cost too, it's really too bad. Apparently Comox/Courtenay had the most snow on the island (we got more last night) as friends who live in Campbell River but work in Courtenay said the snow just stopped halfway between the two towns, very weird
DeleteWe only had a few flakes and none stuck. I dug out my geraniums and brought them to town to spend the winter in the condo. We leave a little heat on to prevent freezing inside (which is rare even outside). One nice thing about living at the cabin is our utilities don't go out during storms. Our electricity may run low on cloudy days, but a small generator can help with that. The woodstove can run 24/7 as long as we put up enough wood (so far we've never run out), and propane is managed to make sure we can cook, use our refrigerator and have a few lights at night. Kind of basic but works fine. - Margy
ReplyDeleteSelf-sufficiency is a wonderful thing, isn't it? My geraniums are under all that snow. I don't over winter them though. I did bring in two celesion pots just as it started to snow though, they are so pretty and withstood the frost. I think I might try and use them as houseplants this winter if they last. It's been 3 days and I've seen no spiders/slugs emerging ha ha
DeleteJust checked my geraniums at the condo. They seem to be doing okay with the limited light from the bedroom door. I didn't think about insects that might have come in with them, but there don't seem to be any hanging around. - Margy
DeleteI miss a little snow, every now & again. I was in Singapore, and the weather was crazy hot & humid. I'm definitely not cut out for that temperature!
ReplyDeleteIt was cool & rainy yesterday when I landed, but today is a lovely blue sky kind of day.
I seriously dont miss the snow at all except around Christmas time....and this one was way way too early for us. Welcome back, hopefully they wont hav eyou flying away too soon again
