The Verdict

OK so here is the verdict on the new glasses from Clearly.ca for a grand total of $52.50 less rebate of $4.07 (actual rebate from ebates.ca was a tiny bit smaller than I thought) = $48.43 Canadian.  They were ordered on Monday and arrived two days later.  In the mean time I received an official receipt to submit to benefits if I had any (I don't) and an email advising they had been shipped.  Today I received a third email reminding me if I was not 100% happy with them to ship them back at their expense.

As mentioned in my previous post, I am near-sighted so only use glasses for driving and watching performances such as plays and hockey games and going to the movie theatre.  I have already driven with them and the prescription and lenses seem perfect.  The fit is spot on.  Hubby was shocked, the frame is actual metal, and appears to be excellent quality.   In an effort to show you how they look I took a rather bad selfie today keeping in mind it is 130pm and super dark and rainy today so the glare in the picture is the phone - that's how dark it is.   If you wanted antiglare I could have bought it but see no need for that so didn't.  They came in a rather large case, one big enough to fit almost two pair in so I just am using my old glasses case.

I am perfectly happy with them and hubby is now inclined to give them a try for his next glasses since his last ones cost $900 and he went back three times and still wasn't happy with the fit or clarity.  He needs progressives so they obviously will cost more than mine but he is no longer worried about quality.  He alternates between glasses and contacts so we spend a fair amount of money on his eyecare but much less since he started ordering contacts through Clearly.ca.

In my previous post many blog readers had commented that they had also successfully ordered glasses online from eyebuydirect.ca and zenni optical.  If you are seriously thinking of doing the same I would check out them out as well. Also Vix mentioned that her friend has ordered from  www.new-lenses-for-glasses.com to reuse old frames (they ship worldwide).

In other news I have bought my halloween candy - 300 pieces which hopefully will make it to October 31 although hubby has already broke into one box.  We generally get 30-80 trick or treaters and we decorate our windows and broadcast scary sounds into the neighborhood.

I continue to do 10,000 steps a day but it is much harder now that the weather is dark and rainy, the dog is completely bored so we have been playing with him every single night between sessions on the treadmill.  Work continues to keep us on our toes though so never a lack of things to do around here.

What technique has recently saved you money?  Please feel free to share in comments.

  1. Can you picture us ever paying $900 for a pair of glasses? Yikes. Were they solid gold frames?

    1. No, it was mostly lense cost, they are basic black metal frames - so sad what dispensarys charge these days. I am going to have him to go the same Eye DR who was excellent and then at least try and order them online first. He does have a pretty complicated prescription apparently

  2. I have alread decided that even with progressives my next scrip will have to be online! My last two glasses were a thousnd (I have to have prescription progressives as well, so even if the were a couple hundred, that would be great. And Kevin, I can vouch that it's not the frames, its the prescriptions. Some of us are just blind and bats!

    1. Seriously worth giving it a shot Barbara, nothing to lose as long as you can send them back if they don't work out

  3. We currently have vision insurance which pays (mostly), for a new frame and lenses every other year. The whole eyewear system is a racket as you probably know, so if you can save money buying online, that's great. So happy they didn't end up being disappointing. They look terrific. I wear progressives and get the non glare coating, plus I have a special pair made just for the computer which I cannot live without.

    1. Yes, I watched a documentary how one company basically owns all the dispensary shops - that is why these online companies popped up selling generic frames.

  4. I'm glad they worked out for you. Even though that company offer free returns it's still a hassle if you're not satisfied.
How many Trick or Treaters? That's ridiculous. We lock our gates so we don't get any hallow e'en callers. that's how we save money!

    1. Halloween is still a big deal in Canada, especially in smaller towns like ours where it's still relatively safe to do so. Most towns also have bylaws not allowing any kids over 15 to trick or treat which generally keeps the riff raff away from your house. We shut everything off at about 830 though

  6. It looks like a good bargain. The frame is very nice and becoming, style Pierre Cardin.
Your successful experience made me think about trying to find a way of buying specs cheaper than the usual price I pay for them.

    1. I think they take alot of getting used to (but I don't know that from my own experience). I am trying not to get them as long as possible

  10. I looked the site over. There was only one shape I liked and it was $245. This is the second site online I have checked. I will go check the others now. I am thinking of going to a larger city to choose frames, hoping they have a better choice than here.

    1. Keep looking, I am certain there are more choices in the States than in Canada, there must be cheaper options for you

  11. I prefer metal to plastic - I love your choice and they look great on you. Well done! Sometimes you just have to take a chance and hope for the best - your risk worked out.
We're having summer again! After 5 days of steady rain the sun came out and our temps have been 22c and above. We are expecting the same over the weekend so I am getting on my bicycle. Then a cold front will arrive. We are sure enjoying this extended warm season!

    1. You lucky girl, it's 10 degrees and rainy here right now. Had to pick up Buddy and set him in the grass with the umbrella over his head just to get him to go pee otherwise he holds it for 12 hours - not good

  12. Your glasses look great and the price sure is right. I wear mine all the time so I have variable lenses and go with the anti-glare coating. I purchased a new pair at the ophthalmologist's office and will get to pick them up in November when we go back to the States. It wasn't a cost saving measure, but they do make excellent lenses. Wayne swears by his single vision and bifocal glasses he gets from online glasses orders. - Margy

    1. I think next time I would buy the antiglare too. It doesn't effect me looking out but when people look at me they get a reflection

  13. I often go offline to get the frames of our choice . It will be difficult to get the proper size in online...

  14. Fortunately I had the sizing from the last pair I had (it is printed on inside of frames and bridge) so it wasn't too hard to get something that fit

  15. I am in awe of your 10,000 steps a day. I fell by the wayside when I went to Greece and then couldn't get my backside into gear the first couple of weeks back. Gotta start moving again now though. Anna
