Let Them Eat Cake...in Ucluelet

One of the many great views from the Wild Pacific Trail

So I am blogging from Ucluelet today, listening to the rain on our tiny 260 sq foot rented cabin roof and watching the occasional fishing boat go by out front.  We knew it would rain at least once this trip and according to the forecast it should clear up in an hour or two.  This side of Vancouver Island tends to get more moisture, I wish we had a bit more of this rain back home.  For now, we are just enjoying sleeping in (hubby more than me, Buddy is right there with him), a very large cup of tea made in one of my big mugs brought from home and am looking forward to a yummy brunch of fruit, bagels and eggs.

Yesterday we did a 8 km hike along the coast of the Wild Pacific Trail here in Ucluelet, such stunning views along the way.  And yes, Buddy with his short legs was right there along side us.  Then we got home, rested a bit and headed out for an hour kayak.  Buddy donned his lifejacket and was there for that as well.  I managed to get in 16,000 steps.  My goal is still 10,000 steps a day and am currently working on my 7th week of meeting that goal EVERY SINGLE DAY!

Part of the reason we love this cabin is the view to the bay and all the boats that constantly go by from Ucluelet harbour.  Tourism is not Ucluelet's primary source of income, fishing is.  There is a large commercial fishery right next door to our cabin (behind that tree) which is sometimes noisy but mostly interesting to watch the boats pull up and unload their catch.  We have also seen a small grey spotted seal right out front along with eagles, kingfishers and lots of seagulls.  Pretty great place for being one of the absolutely cheapest places to stay with a dog on this side of the island.
Misty Rainy Morning View, Still Beautiful
Tomorrow is my 48th Birthday.  All summer I have said I wanted cheesecake on my Birthday so yesterday, after realizing I forgot all condiments in our fridge (they were in little containers ready to go, just didn't make it into the cooler) I went and bought some ketchup and spotted a small cheesecake for two in the local grocery store.  I think we will go buy it today as it appears to be a two day cake and wouldn't travel well home so that will give us time to finish it before we leave on Sunday.

With all the crap going on in the world sometimes it is nice to go off to a peaceful happy place to hang out with your hubby and your dog, enjoy nature, exercise, eat lots of good things and have a nice cocktail on your balcony with that fabulous view!

    1. It's been misty here so a sunrise kayak would be chilly, burns off around 10am though :) Plus we are lazy lol

  5. Happy birthday in advance! What a beautiful part of the world you live in... even when it rains. Being the gourmet cook that I am, I got a bit confused when you were talking about cheesecake and said, " I went and bought some ketchup..." I had no idea ketchup was one of the ingredients!

    2. Seems I got my fitbit to reset and did take a charge! How long it will continue to do so is anyones guess. It will only charge on the usb port on the telus tv box. Weird.

    3. I've just read online some wall charging devices like apple have higher voltage than fit bit and that it is better to charge them from a USB port on a computer if that helps. https://community.fitbit.com/t5/Charge-HR/Don-t-use-a-wall-charger/td-p/977427

    1. Thanks Contessa, the rest of the weekend was sunny (and we didn't get any rain whatsoever back home) and beautiful. The two sides of the island sure get different weather. It was so much cooler at Ucluelet (18 degrees) and at home sunny (23 degrees). You can almost see a visible difference as you cross over the mountain from green area (Ucluelet side) to bone dry (our side).

  11. That is beautiful scenery right there. How lovely. Oh, the thought of just lying around with no need to get out of bed if you don't want to - even if just for a couple of days...... wonderful. And I am dead impressed with your 10,000 steps. Wow. On a "normal" day I get to about 6,000-ish. It really means walking at least 90 minutes a day extra to get to 10,000 for me so well done. Enjoy your cheesecake .... and happy birthday too. Anna

    1. That 6000 steps you are talking about is me before March - every day with normal life is really low, partly because we live and work from home. If I don't leave the house I have to go on the treadmill and take a walk with the dog to hit it. Natural walking outside is so much easier than that blasted treadmill but it will serve me well in our rainy winters. Thanks Anna!

  12. Happy Birthday! Have your cheesecake and eat it too!

My husband and I have stayed at a B&B in Ucluelet (name escapes me as it was in 2001, we're overdue for another visit). If memory serves me right, we ate dinner on a boat on the waters edge. It's a beautiful place.

    Besos Sarah.
