$60 Thrift Store Wardrobe

After thoroughly stripping my closet of clothing that didn't fit me or didn't look good on me I was left with only a few things to wear.  Thrift stores to the rescue.  All of the pieces in this post were purchased for $60!  Most of the shirts were $3-4, the pants $4 each and tank tops $2 each.  I only buy clothes that are in premium as-new condition, they are now all laundered and some have been worn already.  All of these were collected over the last 4 weeks.

The shirt above is great for traveling, it folds into a 2 x 4 inch square and will be easily washed in a hotel sink.

I found one item at a garage sale, the tunic above which is great over leggings and has tiny beading at the top.  I paid a whopping $1 for it.  For a dollar I took a chance that it might not fit but it fits perfectly!

My summer wardrobe is mostly capris and yes, I found a couple pair in as-new condition.

The blouse below is silk and I paid $6.99 for it.  Very pretty, airy and looks really good over a black tank top.
If you don't thrift store shop you should - there are a lot of beautiful clothes there if you take the time to look - and be sure to try everything on as every clothing maker sizes things completely differently from the next.

  1. No turning back for me now. I had a dreadful work wardrobe, things were wearing out form being so old, not fitting. Knowing I wanted to lose weight, I also didn't want to spend much so found two pairs of dress pants, a skirt, a cami, and along silkyish t-shirt for under $20. I also nabbed three pairs of shorts for the gross sum of $7.50. These with using some Kohls cash for super cheap shirts, refreshed my wardrobe. I hope (plan) to revamp my wardrobe again come fall with clothes a few sizes smaller.

    1. It certainly is a motivator when things start fitting better. I haven't been the weight I am today for about 8 or 9 years!

  4. Pretty much all I own is second hand :) Funny, the black/white tunic with sparkly neckline is almost identical to one I bought with a gift card :) to wear with black tights on my birthday. Great minds think alike! You did well!

    1. I am pretty sure that one came from the Bay originally. I can pick out the items in my closet that I bought new - most are shoes, the odd thing that is well over 7-8 years old. Almost 80% is from the thrift store though

  5. You did a great job finding steals! I typically shop a few times/year (maybe 1-2), and have specific price points in mind for replacement items. I'm also a little picky about jeans. I've never been much of a thrift store shopper, but you are showing me it's worth checking out.

    1. I am picky about jeans too, still looking for some of those. I have specific things in mind too, next I need some sweaters for fall (summer's a great time to be looking for them)

  6. I love all those tops how fab to find them via thrifting. I don't know if it's where I live but I never have any luck in our charity shops the stuff looks old and just not my thing. I think it's probably me I just don't have the eye or the patience to wade through stuff. I need to cultivate some patience I think lol

    1. I love it is why I do it but sometimes I walk away with nothing. I usually thrift about 1 or 2 times a week and 10 minutes at a time, only to see what new stock they have in. There is still lots of crud there, just have to wade through it.

  7. I buy all my clothes, except shoes, jammies and underthings from thrift stores. At this point, I don't think I could buy full price retail ever again. I always find good quality name brand stuff too. You picked out some really nice things. Fabulous!

    1. I agree, I have difficulty shopping retail now, only do so for underthings, jammies and unfortunately shoes as I rarely find decent shoes at the thrift store that meet my super-comfortable requirement. I am too old to wear bad shoes anymore

  8. You are very fortunate to have such a lovely selection at decent prices. We live in a smallish town in Arizona (45,000), but the prices at the one thrift store and Goodwill rival and exceed regular-priced retail items. I was really amazed at the prices. I usually shop mail order from Sierra Trading Post and LL Bean-type stores, and have been happy with their sale prices - I don't buy at full price from them. The longevity of their products has been great.

    Judie

    1. Our 3 towns (called Comox Valley, all are very close together towns of Comox, Courtenay and Cumberland) total 40,00 but we have about 10 thrift stores and an extremely active buy/sell site on facebook. For many years this area had little employment so people got used to thrift store shopping hence the popularity. Now things are a little better but the thrift stores do a thriving business. The charity ones are still very reasonable and that is where I do most of my shopping. There is a for-profit Value Village thrift store where prices are much higher, I hate it there and only go if I am looking for something specific that I can't get anywhere else as they have a huge store

  9. I have no patience for wading thru the crud and trying to find something in my size. Even shopping at a retail store is a pain. I do love that silk blouse, almost impossible to find silk these days.

    1. I have another silk blouse I bought at the thrift store, Jones of New York a couple of years ago. You would think silk would regain popularity since it is a renewable resource like bamboo clothing. Anyway, I love it and will continue to buy it. Thrifting is my hobby though, you kind of have to like it to find the good stuff :)

  11. I work in a small charity thrift shop a few hours a week and I love it. We don’t have a lot of place and only hang up clothes that are really good. All the rest goes to recycling or other charities. Customers know that and appreciate it that they don’t have to go through endless racks of mediocre to find that one special item. Every time I put something in the racks that makes me say wow and someone takes it out ten minutes later and takes it to check out is such a wonderful feeling too!

    1. I love the thrill of the hunt, even if I have to dig. Sometimes they price the really nice stuff higher but still definitely a bargain.

    2. Sure some people don't mind the larger shops. But many also prefer us because we're non-profit. But in the end all re-use is good. Needless to say I don't own any new retail bought clothing. You know my blog and a lot what I have is even from trash.

  13. Some fab finds here especially the last two blouses!
Why buy new when you can find so much good stuff second hand? Better still, you don't run the risk of bumping into someone else wearing the same thing!
With the exception of a bikini, sandals and a sunhat both Jon & I's Greece wardrobes are all secondhand (yes, we've finally booked it, 26 days to go!) xxx

    1. Woohoo! Good for you guys, you work so hard you deserve it. Yes, my bathing suit was new but I bought it 2 years ago. Like underwear I prefer to buy those new.
