Soggy

It has rained now for approximately 35 days straight.  Some days, like Halloween, it rains part of the day and then lets up.  Right now we are experiencing yet another storm with howling winds and sideways rain.  On these days it is tough to convince Buddy that he has to go outside.  The picture above was taken on Friday afternoon as hubby and I cut out of work at 4pm and drove down to the ocean for some storm watching.  Tough to tell from the picture but the wind was going about 50 km per hour.  Today we have gusts up to 65 km per hour.  Our house is about 2 km from the ocean and the wind always blows harder by the open ocean but our trees are bent over and the rain keeps getting slammed into the side of the house.  There are parts of the island that are flooding, fortunately not in my neighborhood as we are 1000 feet above sea level and away from any creek or river that might overrun its banks.  Just to give you an idea what the same beach looks like the photo below was taken there in early September.

I was totally soaked in about 1 minute when taking these pictures - my underwater camera comes in handy for this type of thing.  In the video below I was getting pushed back while filming by the wind.  Very similar to the tropical storm we went through in Playa Del Carmen a couple of years ago.

Fortunately, we have had no loss of power, just the occasional flickering of lights indicating that it could happen.  I am so ready for a day of sunshine!  In the mean time we are warm and cozy and the fridge is full of good things to eat so other than running over to Mom's later today with a casserole (I cooked too much this weekend) we can stay at home.  Work is busy so that occupies us during the day and I have been reading a lot and avoiding television as much as possible as cannot stand even one more news report on the bloody American election.

It makes me incredibly embarrassed to have been born in the USA - and from that statement you obviously know which way I lean.  Make America great again?  From the mouth of the ass who is trying to ruin it!  If you are voting for Trump and reading this - feel free to unfollow me.  If we disagree so much about basic humanity and decency then no need to keep reading this blog.

  1. Wow, that is quite a contrast in those two pictures. I love a good rain, but I get tire do not seeing sun. We have our first unsunny day for a while. Not rainy, just not bright. Back to driving home in complete darkness again now that DLS. I sort of understand the sentiments about not wanting career politicians, but career a-holes has to be even worse. I'd like to just do a 2 year rewind and see if we can start over again, but then we might end up in this awful mess anyway, so praying life as we know it will not start to end on Wednesday.

    1. I truly hope that by the time this next 4 years is up there is a complete revamp of the political system there as there are so many issues. Our system is so much different in Canada. Although there are 2 main political parties there are also 3 others that are very strong and keep the main 2 in line.

  2. The wind has lulled here since lunchtime-the calm before yet another storm? Trying to get my act together to take the dogs out before it gets worse.

    1. I had to force Buddy out this morning by carrying him. He just didn't want to go out - hates the wind but it has died down a little here too.

  3. The American election makes me cringe as well! I can't wrap my head around the fact that Trump is a candidate! He represents all I can't stand and loathe.

That is a lot of rain you have been having....And I totally understand Buddy!
    Stay dry and warm!

    Hugs,

    Valerie x

    1. I know, right? I can't believe that normal human beings decided to make him their candidate, it's almost like someone said "What can we do to permanently take down the republican party?"

    1. In a heartbeat! This has been the dreariest year since we moved here....but I still love living here.

  5. Wow, that is a long time to go without seeing the sun. We were starting to feel much the same way as we had gone well over a week without seeing any sun. Luckily it has popped a few times over the past few days which was nice but today we have woken up to rain. :-( Guess we will do some inside things today, like going grocery shopping which will take most of the morning as we try to read ingredients and then translate them to English which can be a bit time consuming.

Can't wait to see this whole American election circus over with!

    1. Yes, it's been a long dreary slog. When we get breaks from the rain the sun rarely appears. I am hoping for a better winter, sometimes we actually do see the sun.

  6. What a farce Trump as president with Melania as First Lady is this really going to happen? So far weather where I live is cold but sunny but there has been snow in Scotland and the north with more forecast so we will see. I love a good storm if I'm tucked up inside and I'd love to live close to the sea.

    1. Like I said, embarrassed that the rest of the world has to see such bad behavior. There is snow up in the mountains, looks like the ski hills will have a nice snowy winter.

  7. 35 days of rain. That's depressing. It sounds like the UK last Winter. Poor Buddy. It's frosty here this morning and neither cat will go out (and we only own one of them!) xxx

    1. It appears as though you have been adopted by the cat! Yes, Buddy is depressed and bored. He sleeps far more than a 2 year old dog should. We try to play with him inside but it just is not the same.

  8. Here in Alabama, we have had 42 consecutive days with no rain. We are in a drought emergency. Everything is crispy and dry. The weather though is spectacular. Cool at night, warm and sunny during the day. Unlike the majority of this state, I won't be voting for Trump, I can assure you, but some of my friends are. I can't unfriend them, nor can I change their minds. I can only hope that the quiet ones (like me) come out in droves and that the win is so great, they cannot contest it. I guess we will find out tonight. Hey, just in case....are there any homes for sale in your neighborhood? ;-)

  9. I was going to talk about rain, but your final comments left me loving you... Thank you for your firm statement. I've read comments by some people that un-friending on Facebook or not following a blog just because of "politics" is narrow-minded. But this has nothing to do with politics. This has everything to do with human decency, mutual respect, and so much more. So, I am in 100% agreement with you. No matter the results today (and may Trump fail miserably), it's going to take a long time to recover from the damage done by Trump and his supporters in government. I will definitely KEEP reading this blog.

    1. Thanks Mitchell! I thought we had gotten past the historical stage of it being ok to be racist nasty egomaniacs but apparently not. Let's hope for the best tonight

  10. It has not rained in Alabama since Sept 18, 51 days, I think. The record is 52 days and we will break that and exceed it. The skies are bright and sunny with few clouds most of the time. I won't unfollow you, just congratulate you.

    1. Wow, so many dry days. Are there fires? Sorry, I just feel really strongly that he is a rotten human being. Hillary is not a great alternative but anything is better than Trump.

  11. Well, today is election day. Hopefully tomorrow we will be back to seeing pix of cute animals on fb instead of some windbag. Nice to see you did some cooking on the weekend...

    1. You are so right Peter. I made a massive casserole that fed us for 3 days and Mom for 1 lol. I am having the last of it tonight when hubby has fish (which I am not keen on)

  12. After it rained 40 days and nights in Vancouver, affecting our photography business we moved to Kelowna. Enough was enough. I get having to carry Buddy out, the girls poked their nose out and say no way and turn around unless we carry them out.

    1. Fortunately our business does not rely on sunshine. This is the worst fall since we moved here for constant rain. It's going to be a long winter. I still like it better than the bitter cold though :)

  13. You must be getting our weather. Usually November is grey, cold, snowy or rainy but we've had mostly sunshine and mild temps. I'm loving it. I'm with you on the election - it seems to me that there should be some basic requirements to becoming the president of such a major country. He knows nothing about policy, has no platform, and is a bully and a liar. Can't wait til this is OVER!
