.50 cent thrift store zombie (2016) plus a flashlight |
On to October grocery results:
The monthly budget including all food, over the counter medications, cleaners and personal products is $550 for the two of us less $55.12 previous months overage = October budget of $494.88. We ended the month at $505.34 which means I have reduced our year to date overage down to $10.46 which will come off the November budget. That amount does not include Halloween candy as that comes out of my personal cash spending. I did a Shoppers Drug Mart point redemption for $60 worth of groceries and $20 worth of PC points. Add that to a couple of coupons and I got $87.24 in free groceries this month and there are still a few points that can be used towards November and December gifts and groceries! I love me some freebies.
The fridge, freezer and pantry are 3/4 full although today I do need to go get a couple of items as hubby is cooking dinner tonight and never seems to want to cook what we already have (seriously, does your spouse or family do that?).
Thanks to all your meal suggestions, I intend to try and make some won tons and creole shrimp plus I found some new recipes to try this month. The goal is to make at least a couple of the following:
Slow cooker Texas pulled pork
Baked Scallops (*only if I can find some inexpensive scallops, a little goes a long way)
Pork Chops Stuffed with Feta and Spinach (low calorie)
Herb and sausage stuffed peppers (low calorie)
Sweet and Tangy Short Ribs (low calorie)
Potato, bacon and corn chowder
Southwest stuffed chicken breast
Vegetarian Mexican casserole (gluten free too)
Aztec Turkey Quinoa Burgers
Avocado Strawberry Salad (*strawberries out of season, may substitute mandarin oranges)
Moroccan stew (*likely will use chicken instead of lamb due to price, will use raisins & apricots)
Spicy Kale and Coconut Stirfry (vegetarian)
On the thrifting front I am now on the lookout for a party outfit as we have been invited to a Christmas party for the company that I used to work at and temped at over the summer. We will have fun as a lot of those people are my friends and there is always a lovely meal. I also have to look for more vintage Christmas goodies to resell and for vastly discounted Halloween ghouls for our next years windows.
I have started Christmas shopping as intend to be mostly finished by the end of November. I find that part of Christmas stressful so try and get it over with as quickly as possible.
November has shaped up to be our busiest month of the year work-wise so I may post less. We are having a very strong ending to 2016 and 2017 is already shaping up to be a good business year. This morning hubby was contacted by a film production in Vancouver to possibly do sales coaching for an actor. They did not tell us the name of the production but by some investigative work on my part I have figured out both the name of the movie and the actors in it, some of which are quite big names although who knows if anything will come of it but either way, it is neat even to be considered.
Have a great week everyone!

The skeleton looks fabulous. Glad you enjoyed Halloween.
ReplyDeleteLet us know how your new dishes turn out! I am always looking for something different to make for dinner.
I usually tweak the recipes a bit, change them up to groceries on hand or add this and subtract that. Isn't that what cooking is all about?
Delete"....hubby is cooking dinner tonight and never seems to want to cook what we already have (seriously, does your other half do that?)."
ReplyDeleteI just wish mine would COOK! lolz
You got me there! He does cook usually 1-2 times a week.
DeleteYour zombie head looks very scary!
ReplyDeleteWe padlocked the front gate to keep any trick or treaters out. Aren't we naughty? We chose to be childless, I don't see why I should subsidise someone else's offspring!
You've got a good list of dishes there, Now I know that your supper is our tea I understand. In our case are favourites include south Indian vegetable curry or Punjabi gobi aloo done in the slow cooker (or as you lot call it, a crock pot), slow roasted Haloumi with root vegetables or home made pizza. xxx
I completely understand not doing Halloween. Hubby loves it so we do it. I am not that keen on it myself though. We do a lot of homemade pizza with my fresh homegrown rosemary too. Maybe time to make it again, maybe veggie this time.
DeleteWe broke all records when come to rain. No trick or treaters like most years.
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on
It seems like less kids are doing it these days with store promotions and parties.
DeleteYou are just amazing!! I actually thought about you when I bought our Halloween Candy! Weird, huh? The thought just popped into my head about what would YOU spend? Mine cost $27! Tootsie Roll Pops that the quads and I made into Ghost Pops.
ReplyDeleteI am so happy your business is doing well!! Hope that deal comes through on the coach acting! Sounds intriguing!
Ghost pops, love it! Hubby has a soft spot for Halloween so we will always hand out the candy, and only the good stuff, chocolate bars :)
DeleteI only was home an hour because of a concert and had about 40 but bought candy for 100. Yes-I will eat too much. Great job reducing your overage.
ReplyDeleteThat happened to us last year, ate Halloween candy for a couple of months :) Glad they almost cleaned us out this year.
DeleteFab Halloween display what a fun couple you are. We did a display outside on a small piece of empty garden that is waiting to be planted up. Lovejoy made tombstones and we had a couple of skeletons having a cup of tea lol we had over a 100 kids come to the door they were all polite and well behaved and we had no unruly teenagers we also had lots of cars slow down to look at the display it was all great fun for our grandkids as well as us. I'm impressed with all the thrifted stuff you get I must try harder.
ReplyDeleteWe used to have tombstones but left all of our Halloween decorations behind when we moved 4 years ago (gave it to a friend). Now I am frugally rebuilding our stock. The littlest kids are best - a couple of princesses came by twice since they loved our windows (plus scored 2x the goods lol)
DeleteWOW-coaching!!! Hey, and now you can earn a little extra cash by being a private investigator. The money will be rolling in.
ReplyDeleteI love your Halloween stuff. And the sadness sets in. I have a year to go! ;p
Hubby is certain nothing will come of it...I think it is cool though. A little excitement to break up the day!
DeleteI use pork butt roast cut into fist size chuncks and cooked in the slow cooker to make carnitas. The last batch yielded 14 dinners. Carnitas are a delicious Mexican street food treat, and can be gluten free if you use corn tortillas.
ReplyDeleteI have had carnitas before but never made them...need to slow cook some pork butt!
DeleteAwesome news about the business. So impressed with you guys! Your Halloween decorations are great. We have a few, but failed to put them up this year. #slackers ;-)
ReplyDeleteI cook every week night. M likes to grill, so when he's in the mood, it's salmon, chicken, burgers, or Persian kebabs. Yum.
You are way too busy to worry about Halloween decorations, at least you guys got away for a weekend! Our weather has been so wet no grilling since September (1 night in October doesn't count). We get the good old sideways rain this year so even though our grill is under the roof we would still get wet. I am sure you remember from your Washington days lol.
DeleteKnowing you I bet you find the perfect Christmas party outfit! Can't wait to see what you find. I was at my local thrift shop after volleyball today but had no luck.
