All Clear

Ucluelet June 2016
Well, we sure had a lot of rain but the wind completely missed us and therefore we did not lose power all weekend.  The dog is freaking sick of it (as are we)  but the storms are over and we are back to our regular weather - sort of.  We are having a particularly rainy cold dreary fall when some years October can be absolutely lovely.  On Saturday there was 2-3 inches of standing water in most of the yard which made it difficult for our short little dog but fortunately the ground has soaked it up.  Our neighbors across the street weren't so lucky.  I haven't spoken to them yet but I saw a pump van there yesterday so likely they had water issues in their basement.  We don't have a basement  -  just a crawlspace but no issues there.

I just got back from the dentist and am still a bit loopy after my root canal(first ever) was finished - $786.  Last month they had done a temporary job until they could fit me in and today was the big day.  The only good thing about that $786 is that I can afford it, it sure sucks for people who can't.  I had tucked away $750 and it was a little over but I can live with that.  Also, I get bonus air miles for using my credit card in the months of October and November so also put the car insurance on it a few weeks ago.  By the time this promotion is over I will have earned another free flight to Alberta - by putting crappy things like car insurance and root canals on my credit card then immediately paying it off.  Yes, I pay an annual fee but it is more than worth it based on my usage.

Other than that it was a quiet weekend.  I just wanted to check in and say we managed the storm fine but it was the right choice to stay home or we would have just been worrying about our house and my Mom the whole time we would have been away.  Lots of ferries were canceled and the island we were supposed to travel to was without power for 1.5 days this weekend.  I had no pictures for this post so am sharing one from our June 2016 weekend away to Ucluelet and Tofino.  Cheers!

  1. Good decision ultimately to cancel the weekend away and stay put. Glad you weathered that storm well.

My BIL in SC got through Matthew aok but some of his wife's family lost homes to flooding and no flood insurance. What a mess!

    1. So sorry to hear that. We can't even buy flood insurance in Canada (I was in the insurance industry for years) so when it floods here the same thing. If a tree falls on your house, opens the roof up and it rains its covered. If it seeps in from the ground it's not covered. Crap on a cracker.

  2. Glad that you didn't have any major issues with all the rain and wind that went through your area. Hopefully you will see a little more sunshine before the winter weather sets in.

You could almost have had a holiday down in Mexico for that price and still been able to get the root canal done there. Never again will we pay a dentist that much for dental work. We have been so happy with the work we have had done down in Mexico at a much better rate. Bonus getting the air miles though, that certainly makes it a little bit better, ;-)

    1. If we were traveling to Mexico for long periods of time I would definitely attempt that but so hard on a short timeframe. Mexico has gotten a lot more expensive to travel to than it used to be, that is why we started going to Europe as the costs are almost identical!

  3. Paying out of one's own pocket for dental is no fun. As you say we are lucky we can afford it. Thank goodness we live simply and save our money for the important things-like teeth and travel :)

    1. More emphasis on the travel than teeth though. I get far more enjoyment out of it :)

  4. Glad your ok, but sorry for your neighbor. I can so relate. I've escpaed root canal and wisdom teeth removal so far, but I hope you have a fast recovery.

    1. Actually other than the actual process where I gripped the side of the dental chair for 2 hours I had very little pain last night and today feel fine other than my gum being a little sore from where they had the dental dam. Putting it behind me!

  5. Very happy you had no major storm related issues. We are in a drought so rain sounds pretty delightful right now.

    1. Sometimes in the summer we get drought like conditions but not this year. Lots and lots of rain. I am ok if we could send you some of it though - Buddy would think that was pretty fantastic as he is very very sick of it.

  6. Root canals are unpleasant and expensive, which I learned too. Even with our dental insurance they are expensive, plus I needed a crown after. How good you had the money stashed away.

    1. They certainly are unpleasant. Our government dental association puts limits on what they can charge and it is still expensive! The crown came out of last year's dental budget fortunately and was not damaged while they did the root canal. Now that tooth should be nice and sturdy for at least another 20-30 years. If not I might just have it pulled and be done with it. Worth the investment now since I am only 47 and it is a tooth I need to chew with daily.

  7. I've never had a root canal but my hubby has had many. No fun there. Dental bills always seem to come at the worst possible time. Glad you didn't suffer any damage from the weather. We were lucky Matthew wasn't anywhere near us, but sooner or later we're going to have to face a hurricane and I can tell you I am so no ready for that.

    1. It was fairly brutal, I was clenching the dental seat with both hands (didn't hurt but was driving me crazy). I could see a clock on the wall...tick..tick. Two hours later I was very happy to see the backside of that office. So glad you haven't seen a hurricane yet. Once tropical storm for us in Mexico was enough. That one had rain 10x harder than anything we got this weekend - and the wind! Carazy!

  8. Sorry to hear that you cancelled your trip away. Your description of October sounds very much like the typical British one, wet, stormy and a bit rubbish. A great incentive to start looking for flights!
I've said it before but thank goodness for our NHS. xxx

    1. Back to India this year or somewhere else? You are correct, especially Vancouver Island having very much the same weather as Britain (except our summers are generally very warm and sunny - always). We have tons of Brits on our Island, even special aisles in the grocery store for British-specific foods. If you ever come here, please do so in summer lol.

  9. You did make the right decision, certainly no fun spending your holiday without electricity and worrying about your Mom and your home. That was a good price for the root canal, around here they start over $1000.00

    1. The dental receptionist told me it is based on the number of roots. Mine wasn't the maximum but $1100 sounds right for the maximum. I have a very old-school dentist with great bedside manor who is retiring shortly, referred by a friend. I am sure he undercharges the max of what you can charge in BC.

  10. Sorry to learn about your root canal. Dear lord! Do you need a crown on top of it? If it is a molar tooth, better to get a crown. I think. getting a dental check up once in a year is really worth. Also, flossing every day is great. glad that you are doing fine.

    1. I had a crown put on the same tooth September 2016 ($1100) as the tooth was not 100% dead at that point they left it just in case it would not need a root canal. It had gotten very sensitive this Spring and so I figured out that was the issue. Fortunately they just drilled down and were able to leave the crown wholly untouched. I have a very expensive tooth now - crikey!

  11. I NEED some more bonus air miles. I never thought of taking the root canal route!!!

  12. I don't know how people get enough air miles to do anything. We don't go to a lot of stores that offer miles, but after fifteen years of saving we didn't get enough to get anything they offered, let alone actual airline credits. We have ours away to charity so they wouldn't just take them back. - Margy

    1. We have Rexall, Thrifty's and the biggest one by far that I collect the most is the credit card.

  13. I'm glad that you weathered the storms without much trouble. And good job on the extra miles but a root canal is supposed to be the worst. Sorry about that.
We are having a warmer than normal fall. Today is the first day that it feels fall-ish. I'll pull my cute boots out, that might help with my mood.

    1. I have cute boots (bought at the thrift store) but they are bloody hell to walk in. Only get pulled out on rare occasions. I need some cute comfy boots!

  14. You so made the right decision!
    Dental work is amazingly expensive!
I wish you could share some of YOUR weather with us and we would be happy to give you some of OURS!!
Today feels more fallish than we have had in awhile. Still no reason to wear sweaters and we are a long way from having a fire in the den fireplace!
