A Sign of Spring!

I spotted a surefire sign of Spring yesterday - my chives are growing again!  I realize a lot of you have lots of snow on the ground and are experiencing bitterly cold temperatures, and for that I am sorry.  I happen to live in one of the places that snowbirds come to winter.  No, the trumpeter swans and snow geese have not left our fields yet, but this early sign of growth in the yard after the grass has been dormant for a couple of months and the chives had been dead since November is a very positive sign.

My rosemary plant that was 2 inches high when I planted it last Spring is now about 1.5 foot high and extremely healthy, it loves these wet warm winters we have.  I cleaned out the spice cupboard last week and finally threw out some dried rosemary that was a couple of years old.  Rosemary never tastes as good as when it is fresh.

Now if only the neighbors jerk cat...or the jerk neighbors cat (both are jerks) would quit trying to use the rest of my growing bed as a cat litter box.

  1. I know it feels good to have early signs of spring, but I do worry about the snow pack. At least I heard it was better than last year's already. That's some comfort. We are heading home to the cabin next Wednesday after a short trip to town for some of Wayne's sports games. I need to get out in my garden and start preparing it for spring planting in April. First, I have to get those winter crops pulled and stored so I can fertilize the soil. - Margy

    1. We have loads of snow in the mountains above Comox this year, most I've seen since we moved here 4 years ago. Finally!

  2. You are so right about rosemary. It is so much better fresh!

I think we will have an early spring this year. We had no real winter to speak of. Getting my tomato seeds started this week!

    1. We actually had a colder winter than last year and I am getting really tired of the rain - so am grasping at every sign of change :)

  3. My rosemary is doing great, too and I noticed the parsley and lemon balm growing again this afternoon! I think we missed most of Winter here in this part of Texas!!

    1. You did except those nasty rain storms. I don't grow parsley - have to wait on planting cilantro for two months yet.

  5. It hard to find any sign of spring with snow on the ground. But I've seen a few spring bulbs poking up.

  6. That is wonderful! I am looking forward to any signs of life. It was very cold here this weekend and it snowed but I'm ok with it because it is supposed to be 50 on Friday. It's been an easy winter for us so I can't complain. But after being cooped up this weekend, I could use with a little Spring.

    1. I remember those cooped up snowy cold weekends. It poured rain like crazy here this weekend but it doesn't bother me as much as the cold. The dog hates it though - he has learned to hold it for hours on end then runs like a bat out of hell to his favorite "spot" and tears back in the house.

  7. LOVE your bits of green! The snowdrops which were almost blooming here are now covered with 2' of snow. I have chives out back and love it when I can start snipping them to add to my baked potatoes! I'm guessing that's still a month or two away!!

    1. I remember that picture of your snowdrops - they are hearty and I am sure will be peeking out in no time once your snow leaves again. Stay warm my friend!

    1. Very cool, I love that you have a pet tortoise. I had a pet turtle at one time. Maybe he just was glad to see that you made it safely home from India?
