I scored 10 just ripe bananas yesterday(I ate one just before taking this picture) for .22 cents a pound, a record low price for bananas in my area. The grand total worked out to $1.12 or just over .11 cents per large banana. I had to mail a parcel so stopped in at the attached grocery store and saw that bananas were on for .44 cents a pound. I piled some into my basket then got to the produce markdown section and saw a bag full of these barely ripe bananas on half price! Even if we can't eat all of them I can freeze the rest as make banana muffins at least once every two weeks.
Just past the halfway mark in the month and 3/4 of the way through my grocery budget so the only way to stay on budget this month is to stay out of the grocery store. Since the fridge and freezer are packed full to bursting this should not be a problem.
We have spent $121 CAD so far this month on groceries. I know...it's kind of different for us!

This 30 day gig where lots of meals are included makes for such a cheap month!
ReplyDeleteYes, this will be a very inexpensive month for us!
DeleteGotta love a thirty day gig like that! Looking forward to the February expenses report Kevin.
DeleteGreat score!!!! If you hadn't gone in - you wouldn't have found them!!!
ReplyDeleteI try and do that to get the loss leaders of each store...this one is usually the expensive one though.
DeleteNice work! I love finding a deal on produce.
ReplyDeleteFortunately it seems the stores are taking pity on us and using them as loss leaders - I'll take it!
DeleteGreat banana buy! I am spending very little at the grocery store, but TheHub stops in daily. I think it is recreational for him since he brings home food we already have here.
ReplyDeleteMy hubby does that too. I shudder every time he goes in there...budget gets blown!
Deletemmm... Banana smoothies!!
ReplyDeleteYes! Going to make a mango banana orange smoothie for lunch.
DeleteI wish I could send you bananas and liquor. Both are cheap around here compared to what you pay. Would you like some snow too? ;p
ReplyDeleteI wish that too! No snow though, thanks very much. Our 2 snows a year are just fine.
DeleteImported bananas never taste as good as the butter bananas in India. Great price, though! x
ReplyDeleteI know, these don't taste nearly as good as the ones we got in Costa Rica. These did come from Mexico though, I wonder how little they pay those poor Mexican farmers.
DeleteYou look to be a woman after my own heart!
ReplyDeleteThere are lots of us bargain hunting women around :)
DeleteThat is an amazing deal! I am eating from the freezer myself right now....
ReplyDeleteWe are doing that too - only picking up rock bottom bargains right now.
DeleteI love over-ripe bananas. They freeze well, I've bought them in bulk to use for smoothies for months :) Awesome for baking, too. Haven't tried banana muffins yet.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, banana pineapple muffins are the best!
DeleteBanana nut bread is a favourite for me when I have ripe bananas. I've never thought of freezing bananas. I better look that up. - Margy
