Conehead

We have had a very stressful week here getting ready to deliver training to a huge client, many late night work hours and then this morning, just when hubby is to leave town on business we wake up to find our fur baby with a really bad boo boo to his right eye.  Off to the Vet Clinic we go.  Yes, we incurred an after hours Sunday vet bill, think big bucks.  Buddy has swelling of the cornea and he scratched quite a lot of it off overnight. He sleeps in the utility room and we didn't realize he was up most of the night.   Hopefully, with some love, cone and attention including anti inflammatory meds and antibiotics he will get better in a few days and the scratched off part will grow back.  He feels like crap right now though and has mostly been sleeping.

All we know is that right at bedtime he went outside for the last time and then scratched a bit at his eye when he came back in.  The vet thinks he ran into something or got something in his eye but there isn't actually a scratch, just overall swelling that we could see with the dye they use.  If it doesn't get any better by tomorrow I have to take him back, they will then sedate him and see if something is still in his eyelid (not possible without sedation).  Apparently dogs have 3 eyelids.  I did not know that.  Anyway, hubby is traveling right now and I am caring for Boo Boo Puppy.  I had intended to take a walk with Buddy and Mom and then Mom and I were going out for a Greek Dinner for Mother's Day.  Instead, Mom is coming over with a big 2 liter bottle of cider and we will be ordering pizza and watching a movie at home.  I get to put drops in his eye every 6 hours.  It took 3 of us at the vets to get the first one in but alone I was successfully able to get a drop in this afternoon.  I think he gets more riled up the more people involved.

In other news, my Mother-in-law has been officially diagnosed with Alzheimers. We have known for several years that something bad was going on with her brain. Last year she forgot how to tell time and was having issues working her washing machine.   Fortunately she quit driving in December when she turned 80 as did not retake her drivers exam.  We had been terrified she would hit someone and she had refused to stop driving before then.  The good news is now that she has been diagnosed she has been given better medications and seems in  much better spirits and her thoughts are much more together.  She is in a great environment where her seniors unit is attached to the hospital and as she needs more care they are right there to give it to her.  The same facility also has long term care down the road which means she would move rooms but not have to leave the building when things worsen. Her unit right now is a regular apartment where they deliver her meals.  She can have a nurse come in and give her meds each day so she doesn't forget to take them which has been an issue in the past.  We sent her a live plant arrangement and teddy bear for Mothers Day which was delivered yesterday as the small town where she lives only has one florist who is closed on Sunday.  She loved it.  It is hard being a Province away but hubby tries to see her every time he goes on business to Alberta which is usually every other month.  His brother and family live in the next town from where she is at so they see her fairly often and can see to her financial affairs and monitor her health better than we can from afar.

On that note I shall sign off - Happy Mothers Day to all of you out there, to humans and fur babies alike!

  1. Awww! Poor Boo Boo Puppy. I want to hug him. I hope his eye heals quickly and that he doesn't need further treatment. I'll bet he just hates the cone.
So sorry to hear about your MIL. I'm hearing more and more stories like that every day. It's so sad, but it sounds like she's in a nice place and getting good care.

    1. Buddy is doing fine, and is back with total energy to drive me whacky. My Mother in law is in the best possible place for her and in relatively good spirits so we have a lot to be thankful for.

  2. Bless your heart! Glad your Buddy is improving!
Aging parents and concerns for them as WE age ourselves is not always easy. I am grateful for every day Louis Dean and I get to live normal active lives. I think my mother will outlive us all!

    1. You are so right, parents aging is a huge concern. We are lucky in the care she is receiving and that I am close (1.5 blocks) to my Mom if her health goes South.

  4. I am so sorry for the Alzheimers diagnosis it is such a hard trip tp be a part of. Sounds like she is in the best place for care though. As our parents age our role as caretaker or care taking supervisor can be overwhelming.

    1. It is overwhelming. Fortunately we only have one parent in that type of situation, fingers crossed my Mom has many more healthy years.

  5. Oooh I knew something was up when I saw the title of your post on the blog link of mine. Poor guy, wearing "The Cone of Shame." Only he has nothing to be ashamed of. I hope his cornea heals well -- and quickly. Emergency vet bills happen at least once in the life of every dog. I hope this is the last time for you!

It is fortunate you had already moved your mom prior to the diagnosis and at least know she is in the right living situation when things progress. The meds they have to treat that condition have improved greatly over the years. And you are lucky to be in CA with a better health care system than we have here in the US. Many of my friends are going through similar issues now and being in the US where the system is worse is not making it easy to handle.

I hope she does OK now that you know what is going on.

    1. It has been an expensive first year with Buddy but we expected it and we don't have to pay child support anymore lol so that money is now going into the Buddy care fund. We do seem to do better in Canada for these type of things but you still need to watch out for your family. She lives in a very small town so most of the people taking care of her knew her in her younger years which is really nice. Very personal care.

    1. He also was terribly unimpressed with me trying to put eye drops in several times a day. If he could have swore at me he would have :) Mostly healed now though thank goodness.

  7. Poor guy, that must have been a painful night for him. Those corneal abrasions are deadly. I've had one. When we first got dogs we used to crate them and keep them out of the bedroom. One morning when I went to let them out I discovered that one had been ill all night wand was covered in her own vomit. From then on we took the doors off the crates and the dogs were allowed to wonder into the bedroom if they chose to and sleep on the carpet. Years later, the girls simply sleep in bed with us. Which is a good thing because that is how we discovered one had been bitten by dozens of red ants while RVing in Texas one year. She must have stepped in a nest of ants on her final outing of the night and about 4 AM we were awoken with her scratching. She had huge welts all over her and was in major pain. It took days for her to recover ( after an ER visit to the vet also on a Sunday ). We kept her knocked out for 3 days so she would stop scratching.

    1. I just saw in the news we have fireants here on Vancouver Island. I am going to be EXTREMELY careful with Buddy this year. Sounds so painful for your dog.

  8. Hope the cornea heals fast for him - sounds painful! We've just had a talk at chapel in the last month about becoming a Dementia-friendly community here, and it was a really interesting talk - I had no idea about many of the ways that dementia can affect people: we all know about the memory issues but there were so many other aspects. It was very eye-opening for me. Prayers for you all xxx

    1. Buddy is mostly healed now. All dementia becomes an issue for families, what was toughest with us is that she wasn't receiving proper treatment for it but now that she has been diagnosed she seems to be getting better medication which we are grateful for.

  9. Oh poor Buddy - here's hoping he'd doing better now (Tuesday). I feel so bad for pets when there is something wrong as they don't understand what's going on. One day Luna sneezed about 100 times and I was so worried but the next day she was fine - she must have had a blockage or something.

  10. I am so sorry for your doggie! WHy do pets always seem to get hurt on the weekend when vet prices are double or triple normal visits?

  13. You have a lot going on. I hope that his eye is all healed. They get themselves into more trouble.
And my husband's grandfather had dementia. It is a sad and scary road. He ended up in a place just like your MIL. It really is the best thing for them.
I hope that you had a wonderful trip.
