7 Things Day

1.  We had takeout Japanese food last night which fed two adults plus lunch for Hubby today.  At $28 I could have bought far more groceries with that money.  Frugal Fail.  I am going to attempt no eating out until we go on Vacation April 5th.  We shall see how that goes as I have been very low energy lately.

2.  Due to low energy and lack of watching what I eat I have regained 2 pounds.  Need to do something about that.

3.  The snowbirds (Canadian Geese, Trumpeter Swans, and Snow Geese) seem to be acting like they are getting ready to fly back to their summer homes.  They winter here with our moderate temperatures.  That means SPRING IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER!  The bunnies are busy cavorting (and pairing up) which also means Spring and we have had a sudden throng of Robins every where you look.  I also noticed that the grocery store has opened up their fenced area that they put out plants for the Spring, part of the Joy of living on Vancouver Island.  In Alberta this would happen in late May or early June.

4.  90% of the snow we got a week and a half ago (1.5 feet) is melted.  It is supposed to be sunny and go as high as 20 degrees Celcius by the end of next week  - yay!

5.  We just paid an extremely high electricity bill, which hubby was grumpy about.  This week he confessed he forgot to turn off the heater in the garage (*he turned it on to get rid of some condensation a few weeks ago, ahem!!!)

6.  I have suddenly been reading, a lot.  Nothing on TV and now I am addicted to reading again.  I am now on my 6th book of the year.  Last year I think I read 6 books in total.  It is good for the brain!

7.  I bought a great pair of pants at the thrift store yesterday for $4.  No one can tell me that you cannot live a good life on the cheap (I completely agree with you Van!)

That's all I've got.  Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. I love thrift store pants--already pre washed so you know they won't shrink and super cheap compared to the mall. p.s. If your library is like ours, you can download thousands and thousands ebooks for free (like library books they "expire" and disappear after a week or so).

    1. Exactly! All the issues you get with new clothing you don't get when buying used. I have to check the ebooks out. Thanks for the tip!

  2. We had Japanese for dinner tonight! Only we spent $47 which like $52 Canadian -- so you did better than I did! I did go to the thrift store tonight and picked up a Tupperware pitcher for .79 cents.

Our space heater is also adding on to our electric bill. Those birds would be fools to leave at this point, we're having a cold winter still in the lower 48!

  4. Great deal on the pants! I went to our local charity shop this morning looking for a clock, found it for $3 - bargain! They had so many good things today but what else did I bring home? Absolutely nothing, so proud of myself!

I wouldn't be too concerned about the fail with takeout, you don't do it very often and you wouldn't do it if you couldn't afford it, so don't be too hard on yourself! It's good though that it has motivated you to challenge yourself not to repeat it before your holiday - not long now :)

    1. I see some at the thrifts just piling things in their carts. That is no different than spending unwisely at a regular store. Be picky and choosy. Great find on the clock!

  5. Our utility bill was high last month and will prob be high again this month because we've had our furnace running constantly, way down here in Alabama. Winter here has been like an endless November in Pennsylvania. I can't wait for a whole week of temps in the 70's. I'm so tired of the cold and rain.

    1. We did have more than normal snow but we usually have wet cold winters here. I am just waiting for Sunshine which we got a bit of today

  6. I hate frugal fails but we need them to stay the course. We should call them frugal hiccups. Yes, that is better.

  7. Ugh I splurge on sushi takeout every now and then too. I figure it is something I cannot replicate at home so that makes me feel better.

    1. I agree, it is one of the few things I cannot make. Plus, not all that bad for you :)

  8. Wow, that's spring for you - snow melting still and all of a sudden the temperature rockets up to +20c!! Love it. Since I've started to listen to "FREE" library books on my iPad I'm reading/listening much more. The only TV I watch is Netflix with my daughter - we're currently hooked on Downton Abbey!

  9. Seven Things is great! I sat here and tried to come up with 7 things (and did) and felt better about my week. As for "frugal fails," my life has been one great big one!

    1. My friend Mitchell, I see it quite differently. I see a man living the life in a beautiful waterview apartment on the coast of Spain, even if you have had frugal fails in the past - sounds to me like you are living the sweet life now

It's a wonderful life here; no doubt about that. However, had we been more mature and responsible with our money, like you, we would have a lot more right now. Hopefully, we won't run out. In any case, I have absolutely no regrets! Frugal fails, but amazing experiences.

  10. Didn't your Smart Meter tell you to turn it off? Just kidding. We are on a one week trip to Arizona to watch Spring Training baseball and college women's softball (and I admit it, get some sun). We too have been gaining weight over the winter and didn't want to spoil our recent good eating habits with a week of restaurant meals. We brought a picnic kit in my suitcase and went to a grocery store to purchase salad makings and fresh fruit for dessert. Our room has a mini-fridge which helps, but I brought a folding bag cooler we can use with ice if the next place doesn't have one. In addition to saving on our calorie budget, we are saving on our holiday expenses. - Margy
