This Storm Is Kicking Our Butt!

Since Friday night we have had over 50 cm of snow with three straight days of snowing, shoveled our driveway four times, and lost power twice.  This might be one for the record books!  We are currently under a snowfall advisory for another 10 cm today.  Thank goodness hubby bought another snow shovel on Saturday after we dug out the first time.  We have had to knock the snow from all our trees to prevent damage.  I did manage to get to work this morning when they were asking people to stay off the roads - no snow day for adults unfortunately but all the schools and College were closed today.

Alex M suggested we use a leaf blower on the snow - it just wouldn't work on Coastal snow as it is like cement -   too much water content.  We also sold the leaf blower when we left Alberta.  This kind of snow you either shovel out or stay home and don't leave the house.  For those neighbors who chose not to shovel on Saturday or Sunday, well, - they are going nowhere fast.

I fully expect to lose power again today, and feel very grateful that the temperature does not get much below zero and that we have a natural gas fireplace for warmth and natural gas BBQ for meals if necessary.  Now that Mom lives just down the road she can come to our house in case of a long outage, without even moving her car.

We have tons of old growth extremely tall trees on Vancouver Island that are currently hanging over many power lines - ready to snap.  Fortunately, we have no large trees hanging over the house so I am not worried about damage to our property, just some inconvenience.

Hubby had a flight booked out this afternoon to Alberta for our business but due to the storm the incoming plane could not land so his flight was cancelled at the last minute and he will now try again on Thursday.

So, after somehow believing we were going to get off fairly easy this winter after seeing what the rest of North America has suffered, we are now seeing our stretch of winter.  They are calling for plus 8 degrees Celcius sunny weather tomorrow - I will believe it when I see it!

  4. Oh.my.goodness! I cannot even imagine!! It is all but spring here in Texas! a COLD spell is coming (high only in 50's tomorrow and near freezing tomorrow night!) but it doesn't hold a candle to YOUR weather!! I do not know which I would choose IF I had a choice - mild winters or mild summers. Our Texas heat can be a killer! But so can your winter snows!

    1. We have pretty mild winters and summers so best of both worlds really. I really would like to make it to Texas in the Springtime though - one of these days!

    1. Very unusual to have this much. It really didn't stop snowing for 3 days straight. They haven't had this much snow in one dump in several years. Oh well, March is just around the bend.

  6. I'm so sorry you have to deal with all that white stuff. This is the most unusual winter and it makes me worry about what's ahead for summer.

    1. I am really hoping for a long nice summer, not too much rain. The only good thing was that before this it was really kind of a dry winter and they were starting to worry that there was not going to be enough ground water to take us into summer. No worries now.

    1. We got off pretty easy compared to you guys, I hate to complain. The only thing that really sucked was hubby had to miss an important business trip but our client was understanding and we rescheduled and he flew out today instead (successfully :))

  8. Oh I love snow! Being Quebec born, I guess it is in my genes. Winter without snow would be so brown and sad! Hang in there it will melt soon

    1. We always get at least one or two snows - or we can drive a half an hour up the mountain to the Ski Hill if we really miss winter (Mt Washington, the only ski hill on the Island)

  9. This has been a crazy winter. We have had tons of snow and lots of shoveling. You would think that I would lose some weight but NO!
    Take care and keep digging.

  10. Ha! You're catching up to us here in snowy Ontario! Our worry is a quick thaw and then flooding. Already some folks I work with have flooded basements. The ground is still frozen so there's nowhere for the water to go except inside!

    1. Not even close, it could snow here for days and days and not catch up to the winter you guys had.

  12. We've had rain but no snow. You must have emptied the sky before it got across the strait. - Margy
