Will You Look At The Size of This!

On our recent holiday to Oregon and Washington State we ate out the entire time.  Let me first say that generally we are normal people with normal appetites.  I ordered what I thought was going to be an average breakfast and it turned out to be GINORMOUS!!
I ended up only eating a quarter of what was on the plate and unfortunately had no way to take away the rest.  Why do restaurants do this?  Had I known I would have split a plate with my Mom or hubby.  Mom was not feeling very hungry and ordered what they called "A little less".  She could not finish hers either.  First let me say that it was extremely tasty and when I have the time I will post a great review on Trip Advisor with a warning about portion size.  I would have been just as happy getting half for $4 but that option was not on the menu.  The biscuit (yes I broke the no bread rule on holidays) was one of the best I have ever tasted and huge.  The apple turkey sausage was yummy.  The potatoes were delightful.  Yet no human being should eat this amount of food at what was advertised as two eggs with sausage.  I know restaurants want to be seen as generous but if I ate all of this I would have gained 5 lbs that day.

Is it just me or has portion size gotten completely out of control?

    1. I agree - had I known I definitely would have split a meal with someone at the table.

  2. You are totally right, portions are out of control in restaurants.

I will be going to Maine son and we plan to share all the restautant meals or bring back to the room as we will be having a stove in the room!
I am very concerned about the sodium content in those meals.

    1. I like having a kitchenette in the room. This meal was the start of a long travel day so no opportunity to take with. I think Canada has the same portion control issue as the USA though, we just don't eat out as much back home.

  3. I've packed up meals and then given them to a homeless person on the street. Not sure you would see to many of those where you went thought!

    1. We were on the road many hours that day and no homeless people in sight (fortunately they seem to be doing better in that area). I felt bad about leaving it behind. Very wasteful.

  4. I find some US portions can be huge! We came back from vacation through the US, both hotels had deluxe continental breakfasts, everything you could ever want, but it's good because you can control the portion. It was so good though!!

    1. I generally only eat breakfast on weekends and vacations but this was enough that I wasn't hungry again until 6pm that day - and I didn't even eat it all!

  5. I shamefully admit that I could probably eat most of that because I have the biggest appetite in the morning. Way too many potatoes though.

    1. I thought the potatoes were overload too. I guess they are cheap enough to prepare. The sausage and biscuit were the best parts though.

  6. That looked sooooo good. I don't normally eat breakfast so I probably would have ordered it for lunch or even dinner. I'm thinking I need to take a road trip. LOL

    1. Sequim Washington, my friend. Just tell them that overstuffed Canadian sent you :)

  7. US portions are more generous than Canadian ones in my limited experience. That is a very generous breakfast. The US restaurant I occasionally stop at has pancakes that are a foot across. Daunting.

    1. I guess I never go for breakfast out at home so can't compare the Canadian versus US but that biscuit was enough for 3 people alone!
