Bargains This Week and an Insult??

Not me!

My biggest bargain this week was .99 cent per lb chicken legs - sold in a bag of 64 for $14.82 which is dead cheap at about 24 cents a leg (sorry vegetarian readers).  The only downside to this purchase was that it leaked chicken juice all over the checkout.  It was a special which I am sure they were wiping up after all day.  I brought it home and delved it out into bags of nine legs which is dinner for two and lunch the next day for hubby as I have a gag reflex that kicks in on eating leftover chicken (weird I know).   That works out to 21 individual portions.  If I had more room in the freezer I would have bought more but already have 4kg of chicken breasts and a turkey in there - enough poultry for a long time.

My insulting bargain of the week:  at Salvation Army I found this really nice red blouse which is half casual half dressy. When I got home I went to record the purchase with the receipt - and realized that they gave me a 30% off discount.  IT WAS SENIOR DAY and I am 43.  Oh well, I am taking the discount with a grain of salt.  I contribute regularly to their stock as take all castoffs there.  I am pretty sure she just forgot there are a few non-seniors in this town as this is somewhat of a retirement community.  Total for the blouse was $2.62.

Hubby just laughed at me - he has yet to receive a senior discount for anything and he is 51.  I am not sure he would be laughing if it happened to him.

Have a great week everyone!

  1. That is too funny that they gave you the discount. Maybe they are so used to keying it in, it just becomes automatic. Their loss, your gain!

I should get busy and post the great treasures we found last week. Love our thrift shopping!

Enjoy the rest of your week.

  2. I once got the senior discount in Bulk Barn...the lady on cash said I could practice being a senior.

  3. I caught the bus into the city recently and got asked both times (on the trip in and out!) - most offended :)
I do sometimes get asked in the supermarket as well, but the girls there all look about 12 so anyone over 20 probably looks old to them haha!

    1. I agree - anyone under 22 thinks I really am a senior.

  5. A backhanded compliment, but I bet you look great for a senior!

    1. Yes, only crows feet and no grey hair (thank you hair dye)

  6. I think it's more likely that they automatically gave it to you. Maybe they get tired of asking. Our local supermarket just upped the senior discount age to 65 (from 55). And if you don't ask for it, they won't give it to you. Next I'm sure they'll start carding. Times are tough so take any break you can get. :)

    1. How bad is that! To raise the discount senior age? There would be major backlash in this senior filled town if they did that here.

  7. Oh that's too funny! But I would love to get that discount. What is their age for senior?

I still think its odd to get AARP discounts on travel when you turn 50. We were taking our very young daughters on a vacation and were collecting the AARP discount on our hotel.

I'm going to have to look into what discounts you get at age 55, and start making my husband come shopping with me.

    1. I think it was 55. Hubby is 51 so I might ask for senior discounts for him (whether he likes it or not).

  8. Just got hubby on the ferry for free today. Even so, a one way from Powell River to Vancouver was almost $48 (including our Experience Card discount). No way to live there on the cheap. - Margy

    1. The ferries are so darn expensive. I have heard the Black Ball Ferry is free on your birthday (but you have to pay for the vehicle still) so might take advantage of that one.

  9. The picture made me laugh.
And I would just consider it an over-sight. But my husband would give me so much grief over it. I probably wouldn't tell him. He is a smidge older than I am .
