Thrifting for Clothes

Jockey shirt $5.39
Here are all my thrifting wardrobe finds from June and July.  In June I bought the dress and black camisole and this Wednesday I took Mom along and went on a bit of clothing shopping spree.

Reitmans Blouse $5.39

Old Navy top $3.71

Black Capris $5.39 and Tan Capris $3.71

Dress $7.23

Reitman's blouse $3.71, Black Tank $2.75
Total for all items shown here? $37.28 including tax.  Don't you love thrift store shopping? The secret to maintaining a decent thrift store wardrobe is going often, and trying everything on.  Never buy it unless it is in pristine like-new condition.  I wash everything immediately when I get home and hang to dry as clothing just lasts longer that way.  My annual clothing budget is $200/year (just over $22 a month) and that includes everything from socks to underwear to shoes to outer clothing.  I buy 95% of my wardrobe at thrift stores.  I do buy new underclothes and socks but almost everything from the last 4 years has been purchased at the Thrifts.

I had purged a very large bag of clothing last month out of the closet - now I have something to wear and still have $96.37 in the year to spend on clothing.  It doesn't sound like much but when you shop thrift stores it sure goes a long way!

  1. Fantastic! I can not purchase as much clothing at thrift shops as I would like to, I am just under 6 feet tall, so it can be difficult to find clothes that are long enough. I do find some things on occasion (yay) just not as often as I would like. My kids are practically 90% thrift store. They love to go shopping and pick out all sorts of random cool clothes,Bonus when the tag is the color of the half off tag! You got some great deals. You can never have too many khaki pants!

    1. I bet you have the same issue shopping new as used being so tall. Kids clothing are bargain basement prices at thrift stores. You are right, khaki pants are my uniform in the summer.

    2. I'm 5"11 1/2" Tall and shopping at thrift stores is no problem at all. I too thought it would be difficult, but it is not. My favorite part is looking or pants/jeans. It's super quick and easy to scan as we are looking for Longs/Talls on pants. LOL You just have to go often.

My wardrobe is MUCH nicer now that almost all of my clothes come from thrifts. I buy things that I could never afford or allow myself to purchase at full retail price. :)

  2. Great finds! I wish they had pristine clothes at my thrift. They are usually very worn...

    1. I have to wade through a lot of worn clothing to get to the pristine ones, but it pays off because your wardrobe looks brand new.

  3. The one thing I find hard to find at the thrift store is good jeans. I guess we all hang on to them until they are worn out. 2nd hand ones would come in handy for working in the garden.

    1. You are right, good jeans are hard to find. I always look but rarely find them.

  4. I just bought 3 pairs of capris on ebay. I kept wearing the same ones over and over, they were getting so faded and old looking that I needed something new to finish up the summer. Same thing with my shoes/sandals, but I rarely find anything used in good condition in my size, so I splurged on some shoes and sandals on LLBean. :-D

    1. Size can be an issue, especially when you are such a tiny person. I try on absolutely everything and bring someone along for a brutal opinion. The great thing about thrift stores here is we get way more variety than what the new stores have being a small town.

  5. OK. I think I'll have to try a little harder the next time I browse a thrift store. I have never ever found any clothes, while others are always finding great stuff (although I don't think what you found would really suit me).

    1. I am not sure about Spain but I am pretty sure New York must have a decent thrift store or two. I am pretty sure though that you are not thinking about that when visiting your family.

  6. Thrift store find posts are always my favorite! You did amazing and I'm like you I buy it and wash it and then hang it. The only thing that I splurge on is VS bras and undies but I ask for gift cards for Christmas so that pretty much gets me through the year.

    1. I like others thrift store posts too - kind of like searching for treasure. I have a Target Gift Card from Mothers day saved up for unmentionables (does anyone say that anymore) for the same reason.

  7. I'll give you $5.00 for the Old Navy shirt!! I've done a bit of thrifting on the island - Halifax has a whole row of colourful vintage/thrift shops and my friend and I shopped the hell out of them! Most items were $5.00 - I got an Eddie Bauer hoodie (like new), another v neck sweater with pockets, an awesome pair of black pants with a textured pattern from Banana Republic and a cute black top to go with them. SCORE!!

    1. No way, definitely a keeper :) I always feel like I get such a great deal when shopping thrift stores. For the same reason I usually feel ripped off when I shop retail.

  8. I need to go through my things and clear out stuff I haven't worn in years (or the size is no longer good). Too bad they don't have a trade-a-shirt policy. - Margy

    1. I know, I always thought it would be neat to go to one of those giant clothing swaps but never found one near me. I have seen them advertised in Nanaimo though.
