Live Every Day - Even The Snowy Ones

So we got a couple of more snowstorms since my last post - 1.5 foot of snow on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.  All schools were shut and also the college on Monday and Tuesday.  Both days we shoveled out and managed to do our errands.  When you live in a place that mostly has rainy winters when it snows it comes to a standstill.  People are deathly afraid to go out in it.  The temperature was only a few degrees below freezing and yet people stay home.  People who come from snowy climates like Alberta think we are crazy.  I am starting to agree.  Others have to go to work when it is minus 30 degrees celcius across the rest of Canada.  Why not get to work after you've shoveled your driveway?  Winter/snow ice tires should be mandatory this time of year down in the valley other than just the mountains but they are not.  Anyway, a bit of a rant but I am kind of tired of the entire place shutting down when it snows.

Buddy loves the snow at 2 inches but the snow is almost over his head now so we had to shovel him several paths in the yard to do his business.  He still comes in covered in snow and has to be rubbed down and dried off every time.  He is ready for the snow to go away.

So are the humming birds.  I filmed this on Sunday afternoon after only a couple of hours of snow. If it doesn't load on first try hit the play button a second time and it should work. I have been faithfully bringing the feeder in at night and putting it out early so that it isn't frozen - they hover around the feeder all day not getting too far away.  I feel sorry for them but things should warm up in a few days.

Yesterday I shoveled our drive with hubby then went to shovel Mom's pad off at her condo.  The association does the roads there but you have to shovel out your own short driveway.  When I arrived a police vehicle and ambulance were at a condo just across from hers.  The police were doing a welfare check on someone, with good reason.  She has passed away.  From what I don't know but her employee was there with the police trying to see if she was ok.  She likely had been there for a couple of days as no snow had been touched on her vehicle.  Very sad.  The whole time I was shoveling I was looking at a small snowman that a child had built at her condo several days ago.  I wonder if that was a niece, nephew or grandchild.  She was my age, not a senior.  It kind of shook up Mom, she has several friends in hospital right now and then the lady across the street dies out of the blue.  This is a small condo project, only 20 units and all are patio homes.  Mom didn't know the lady well but waved to her regularly.  She had only moved in just over a year ago.  The condo is mostly seniors as has rules that you have to be 40 plus to live there.  She likely died due to natural causes since there was only one police then the coroner.

Anyway, it just goes to show that everyone must live every day to the fullest - even the snowy ones.

  1. Gosh, when your contemporaries start dying it hits hard doesn't it! We have mandatory snow tyres in the mountains too of course but then when people in town don't put them on and start skidding all over the place there isn't much point is there. Glad I don't have to drive on it so much any more though.

    1. It does it hard, it was all I could think about last night. Very sad. Just a reminder that no one is invincible

  2. we get snow here, but nothing as heavy as where you are. Years ago we often had closed roads due to snow so I couldn't get to work a few days each winter but the last few years it hasn't been as cold - its seems that we're getting hotter downunder. love the pic of your puppy & the hummingbird video!

    1. We get way less than the rest of the country - a couple of weeks worth of snow at best. It's already starting to melt today and there is rain in the forecast for Saturday which should help in reducing the amount of snow we have. I have seen your crazy hot weather on the tv recently - wow, I couldn't handle some of those temperatures.

  3. The hummers are around when it snows?!? We're used to seeing them show up here in Colorado around the first part of April, then they're gone by Labor Day. We can and will get snowstorms in the spring, but they're usually quickly over with, and the hummers put up with it until the sun comes out. They're tough little guys.

    1. Much tougher than I thought before we live here. Most fly south for winter but a few stick around. Everyone here feeds them year round - I didn't the first few years as thought they migrated but it makes sense as some winters we have no snow and most of the time it is above freezing. We are hoping these few weeks of snow is it for winter.

  4. Well, it sure looks pretty in the pictures. We almost got a snow day (or a sleet day), but it didn't end up happening. The weather has been warm, then cold, then warm, then cold. No wonder the flu is rampant right now. So sad to hear about your mom's neighbor. I think dying alone is so sad. Poor lady.

    1. Yeah, dying alone is sad. I saw her sister yesterday in her condo, at least she was loved.

  5. When we lived in Washington DC, everything shut down with the forecast of a half inch of snow. My aunt wrote from Seattle yesterday and said she wrapped her humming bird feeder in a heating pad to keep it from freezing.

    1. I can see that. Our temperatures are above freezing during the day so I just bring it in at night. It usually takes 3-4 inches to shut it down here ha ha.

  6. I'm amazed the hummingbirds are hanging in during the awful snow, but I guess it's too late to go anywhere. Hope the snow disappears soon!

It's sad that your mom's neighbour passed away so suddenly. I'm sure it will be tough on her family.

    Stay warm and dry!

    1. We have far more in the summer - but I love them, they are fierce and hardy, you wouldn't think so but they are survivors

  7. I have been following the weather and wondering about you. I was thankful that you now have a generator in case it was needed.

    1. This time no power outages, the snow was light and fluffy and then melted a little before the heavy duty snow the last time which gave the trees a bit of a break. We brushed off our cedars and trees to stop them from breaking. I actually went out in the snow in the truck each day, it is a 4x4 and I know how to drive in it so no issues.

  8. Those hummingbirds!!
The UK always grinds to a halt when we get snow but that's because we rarely get it in huge quantities like you do.
    Hope it goes soon.
We're having unseasonably warm weather at the moment although 12 degrees feels a lot colder than last week's 35 degree heat! x

    1. Wow, it's getting up to 5 degrees today and I am so happy! I can't wait for those 12 degrees days again, only a couple of weeks

  9. We live at the top of a steep hill on a rural road. No hope of getting plowed and few cars around to start making tracks. I may not be able to get in to town but I can have lovely walks in the snow. Very sad about the lady who passed away but it does sound like she had people who loved her, all we can hope for in this crazy old world.

    1. Crap - I hope you make it out soon! This last round of snow was the wet heavy kind, my back is still sore from it. It does make you remember to stockpile for winter in case you get stuck in though, doesn't it? The lady who passed was definitely loved, family members have been there this week. Even more difficult as it was so unexpected and she was young.

  10. We love puppy snow days! We've had lots of it and freezing temps. Luckily, TBG works 2/3 of a mile from home. As long as there is no driving ban, he gets to work. It was 30f today and I thought it felt warm!

    1. It's funny how you get used to the cold days ha ha. We are wimps now that we've lived in such a moderate climate for the past 7 years
