Raccoon DooDoo

I picked 4 more strawberries off the 10 plants I bought for $20 - total strawberries are 24 which means each strawberry only costs 83 cents.  Soon I will be at break even level!  And the rat/mouse has left them alone since I scattered bay leaf around them.  The raccoon has been back - this time eating our neighbors cherries as I found a "deposit" in my yard full of cherry pits.  I bet the little bugger had a belly ache.  Now I not only have to pick up Buddy doodoo but I have to pick up Mr Raccoon doodoo too!

Hubby is back from his business trip and there will be no more travelling until September.  I took him down to the marina so we could see if the seals were still there as have family coming in next week and we want to show them the seals.  Sure enough, they were lazing in the sun on the booms.  This is not a great picture but the best I could do with my phone as we were a fair distance away.

A boat was leaving harbour and they were talking about the large jellyfish just below them - another not great picture but this jelly fish was 2 feet wide, not the usual small ones we see.  It was yellow - I believe it is called a Lion's mane jellyfish.

I made a small find this week - a keeper.  This is a small metal tile with glass melted on the front of it with cork backing.  The glass bits at the bottom are Venetian beads therefore this little tile came from Italy - I knew the second I spotted it.  I paid a whopping $3 for it.

My friend's chickens in the last post are laying up a storm so I was able to buy a dozen eggs off her.  So pretty and freshly laid.  The going rate here is $5 unless you buy at the farmers market where they have to pay rent and insurance and they sell theirs for $8 a dozen.  I can get a dozen eggs on sale at the grocery store for as low as $2.50 but they will never compare to these, with the price difference being worth it in my opinion (I refuse to pay $8 though, a zebra cannot change it's stripes).
She was pretty certain the largest egg(bottom right) was a double yoker and she was right!  We ate it for breakfast on Sunday.
We are looking forward to a long weekend without work in it.  The weather is supposed to be kind of rainy/crappy so we will just take it easy and do some things around the house.  We have American cousins flying in on Tuesday night so are taking 3 days off next week to show them around.  I hope the weather clears up for their visit but either way we shall have fun!

  1. I love reading this tonight. I am missing the country and all those fresh eggs that all we had to do was gather. We brought some back with us but it's not the same. And it is so hot here! Triple digits and even hotter with the heat index. What I wouldn't give to get to go to the harbor with you guys and look at the seals!!
Glad the price of your strawberries are continuing to fall!

    1. I could handle it being a little warmer as it is only about 68 degrees - cooler than normal for us (normal is around 78-80 in summer) with rain - I'll see if I can send the rain your way! Aren't the farm eggs so pretty - you are right, it's not quite the same.

  2. I love your seal photo and happy to hear that Mr Raccoon is till around (and not interfering with Buddy!)
The tile is lovely, I do like those millefiori beads.
Have fun with the American cousins. I'd send some of our weather over but I want to keep it! xxx

    1. Thank you - now I know what the beads are called! I knew I had seen they were from Italy but could only figure out they likely came from Venice/Murano. Glad you are getting some good weather, enjoy it!

  3. Ooh! I've never seen a double yoker before. That's neat! That tile you bought is so pretty, What a great find! Sorry about the raccoon poop. At least Buddy didn't roll in it. I'm sure Zoey would have. lol We have armadillos running about at night. Did you know they carry leprosy? Yuck. I'd rather have raccoons.

    1. I would love to see an Armadillo...had no idea about the leprosy though. The worst the Raccoon can give the dog is worms if I don't pick up his doodoo right away (but we pick up Buddy's 2x a day so that is unlikely). Rarely they have rabies but these ones seem to be happy docile ones that don't want to get in the garbage (yet, not holding my breath)

    1. Taking pictures (even crappy ones) help me write blogs so I tend to always be snapping away at anything cool I see. I love the seals, like big lovable dogs. Sometimes they come over and see what you are up to - very curious

  5. Wow. That lion's mane jellyfish would be unpleasant to see or be near. I heard of an episode where a lot of people were stung by the REMAINS of one that had broken up. A painful burn!

    1. I had to google it, haven't seen that one here before and there were actually a couple of them. There is not too much that can hurt you in the water here so we will be on the lookout as we kayak right in that area. We usually don't swim in the ocean unless it's super hot because the water temperature is pretty low, but we do a lot of beach walking and wading with Buddy

  6. Love that tile from Murano. Didn't see anything like that when we were there last June or I would have bought a few but at a much higher price than you paid. We only have room for small mementos.

Only 66F here this morning. Such unusual weather for this time of year. We can't get any work done with the clouds and rain and fire season as in smokey skies are just a few weeks away.

    1. It's a lot greener than normal here right now - waiting for a break in the clouds to take Buddy for a walk but it looks like rain solid this weekend. I never saw anything like that while we were in Italy either, but loved it! I tend to buy up all the large Mexican Pottery pieces I see, can spot those a mile away. Right now I am eyeing up 6 mexican glasses on our 24 hr bidding site, current bid is $1 and it ends in an hour, wish me luck lol

  7. Oh, seals are such an attraction!
I visited Murano while in Italy (many years ago), and I bought some small mementos. I remember getting stung by a bee, and that quite ruined my visit.

  8. What a lovely tile! Will you hang it or put it on a display shelf? I'm thinking it would be too fragile to use.

Love the seal photos. My daughter and grandson have been to the beach - I don't think they made it to the marina.

Yikes I'd have a hard time paying $5 for a dozen of eggs (our farmer's market is $6) but I'm suspect if I did I'd find them much fresher than those at the grocery store. Perhaps when I'm on my own - we go through a fair number of eggs here.

Have a wonderful long weekend! Hope you have some time to just relax.

  9. I miss the fresh eggs I used to get from a co-worker. I have found a good retail source for free-range and organic eggs. Luckily for around three bucks.

Every time I hear of someone referring to a pillaging racoon, I have to admit that in our house, as a result of knowing Southerners, we call them "Trash Pandas." Try that on for size!

    1. We have a large egg producer here on the Island that has free range hens (for real) and they actually even sell them at island stores so that is my backup. Fortunately, the ones here don't seem to like trash that much. Our crows are way worse for that

  10. When I was a kid and visited my grandparents in the country, they bought their egg from a neighbour. I was always excited when one was a double-yolker. Now I know why the prices at our farmer's market are so high. But with all the vegetables coming from our garden I don't need anything else. - Margy

    1. Most people who have never had fresh eggs have seen a double yoker, I was at the Courtenay farm market yesterday and they had a picture of a triple yoker from one of the egg people there, never seen one of those! Next year I plan on growing more, I am always amazed how much you are able to grow on your float!

    1. Thanks - it was a bargain and it looks so nice. When hubby saw it he immediately agreed it was a keeper too
