What Were They Thinking Edition

Mom and I did some errands yesterday which included dropping some things off at the thrift store for donation.  I cannot simply drop things at a thrift store so we had to go in.  Mom starts laughing at this picture.  Seriously, what bride needs to have a gigantic (2 ft tall) picture of herself in her wedding dress framed and hung on the wall?  Wouldn't you want your husband to be in it?

Worse yet, as Mom pointed out, what a great marriage that ended up being for the picture to end up at the thrift store.  If you were donating a picture like this, even just for the frame, wouldn't you remove the picture?  Perhaps her exhusband donated it and got a giggle by doing so.

And finally, what was the thrift store thinking?  Priced at $10 they will have to wait a really long time (forever) to get any money for this, even for the crappy frame alone.

Hubby gets back late tonight if all his flights go according to plan. Lots of flights have been cancelled due to the gigantic storm out East but Toronto seems to be relatively unscathed other than brutally cold weather which he is more than happy to be getting out of.

I have managed to clean the entire house this week and also give Mom's house a good clean.  It does seem a little drab in the house now that there are no longer any Christmas lights up.  I have enjoyed sleeping in this week, something we rarely do when we have telephone conference sessions every weekday in 3 different time zones.  We are not a morning person family, including Buddy the dog as he does his business quickly in the morning and races back to bed to sleep for 2-3 more hours.  He hates eating breakfast before 10 am, such a funny dog.  I am so glad he is healthy again.

I also cleaned out the cupboards and the fridge and did an inventory on food in the freezer.  I will go do my first big grocery shop of 2018 today, trying only to buy things we really need.  I am on a mission to rein in our grocery spending this year and if that means meal planning (hate it) then so be it.  Wish me luck!

    1. I think it was the Ex too! Family would not do that (hopefully)

  2. I like it that you are a good daughter and have such close relationship with your Mom.
Sleeping 7 hours a day is a Must if one wishes to keep healthy and maintain normal body weight. If I happen to wake up after only 4- 5 hours of sleep, I'll usually go back to bed for another couple of hours ( well, I'm retired...).

    1. I have insomnia so often I only sleep 2-4 hours then wake up...then around 6am can go back to sleep! That is right when we usually have to get up so it was so nice just to sleep in after that this week. Mom is one of my best friends, we've always been very close. She turns 75 next weekend and is healthy so hopefully we have many more years together

    1. I did a very good grocery shop but still have lots left in the monthly budget, maybe I can start stretching the budget better. Tomorrow taco casserole!

  5. It is indeed intriguing as to why that picture ended up in a thrift shop isn't it. I remember a rather tubby husband modelling his ex-wife's wedding dress to try to sell it. He looked hilarious and made a fortune from it - I think the beard sold it actually. Anna

    1. I actually wondered if maybe she even passed away...if so wouldn't the bloody family take the picture out? I am still sure its the Ex. That husband probably paid for the bloody dress and someone needed to wear it!

  6. Well my sister in-law has a huge professionally done photograph of herself in her wedding dress just like that one only she is looking over her shoulder! lolz
She also use to sit and watch the video they took of her wedding every day for YEARS.

    1. Oh my, not to be insulting but things have changed a lot! I just can't relate I guess :) For me the marriage is the important part, not the wedding

  7. I had a thought while reading. What if one of your readers was the person in the picture? I do have on elike that, but it's safely in the album where it belongs.

    1. Then I truly hope she would want to know what happened to the picture...and where she could get it back. I found it highly disrespectful that any person connected to her could give it up to a thrift store. I never meant to insult you Sam, lots of brides have that picture, but not 2 feet high and not in a thrift store

  8. All my professional photos were from my first marriage so they are all put away in a box somewhere in the storage shed. I just had my 36th anniversary with my second (and last) husband. Only a few snapshots of the wedding we had in front of my parent's Christmas tree. Maybe our success has been sharing a good life together rather than looking at the past. - Margy

    1. I think a lot of people had those huge professional photos done, but what is apalling is that anyone who knew her donated it without removing the photo, even if it was the ex that is pretty low

  9. I agree with you! You can find just about anything at a thrift store! I’ve bought many an item just to give it a caring home! Needle works that took hours and hours and quilts that were obviously made with love! I think a lot of things are donated after a death when it’s simply too painful to keep them. I have SO much ‘stuff!’ I love it all and I plan to enjoy looking at and living with my treasures until the day I die. No purging of the things I love. But when I’m gone - I’ve told my children to come get anything and everything they want and then hire someone to have a huge estate sale and divide up the proceeds! I won’t mind because I’ve already enjoyed it all and would love for someone else to enjoy it after me.

    1. I bring home those objects too, they tend to be handmade pottery items though. I truly hope that she is still on the earth and it was taken to the thrift store in error, rather than family not caring enough to remove the picture

  10. That "frame" is unbelievable. I agree, it has to be the ex getting his revenge.

    1. Hopefully it wasn't just family not caring about the picture....if objects could talk.

  11. I hate how the house seems drab once the Christmas lights and decorations come down. It takes me a few weeks to adjust.

I love Buddy's attitude and schedule.

  12. I think the bride got rid of it. She had a 5x7 in an album, divorced the guy, and did not want this reminder of a happy day that turned out all wrong. She remarried and did not want this displayed, had a new life and just got rid of it.

  13. The food prices are getting high in Toronto. Hopefully, you will get a grip on your grocery budget this year. But, you add things like buying plants also in the grocery budget. May be that is is one reason the grocery expense seems so high?

    1. I actually think the grocery bill is high due to OTC meds, we have a couple of diseases that won't kill us that we have to self medicate for, this is way cheaper and easier on our bodies than prescribed meds which we would pay for 100% anyway. On average it is about $100-150 of the total outlay. Plant costs were very low this year, less than $20 total

  14. Who would buy someone's thrift shop wedding photo?! And for $10!! Not exactly a bargain. Yup, that one's going to sit for a long time looking for a buyer! What a hoot!
