Rain, Glorious Rain

We are ever so grateful for receiving rain today - the last time it rained was five weeks ago.  Slowly the grass, shrubs and trees have become tinder dry, especially those that are not being watered.  It is a good solid rain, not just a sprinkle and there is more in the forecast for tomorrow.  Normally in summer I wouldn't be so happy to see it but with drought conditions on the doorstep it is welcome. It appears the areas on fire in the interior of BC are receiving rain today as well so hopefully it will help to bring the forest fires under control.

There have been a lot of opportunities to donate to the wildfire efforts.  In addition to donating cash to the Red Cross the local Rotary were trying to collect 3000 used clean sheets in good condition to be sent to the evacuation centers and to be used for the firefighters/police who have been helping fight the fires.  I had just bought a new sheet set the day before so cleaned out the cupboards and found some that I could donate.  I also donated some grocery store points from an island grocery chain as they are donating cash to evacuees.

We have been super busy this week with work, something that always happens when hubby gets home from a road trip.  Next Friday we are only working a half-day as I booked a fishing charter for Mom, hubby and I for 5 hours.  To go deep sea fishing is a bucket list item and something I've never done (only freshwater).  We have been eating out of the freezer trying to make room for *hopefully* the numerous fish we bring home.  The charter costs $450, not cheap but was Mom's Mother's day gift, Hubby's Birthday and Fathers day gift and my Birthday gift.  We are going for experiences, not things this year.  I've been watching the charter company's facebook page and it seems they have been bringing in many large salmon and ling cod so things are looking good.  Either way, we get out on the ocean where we love it and I will be taking lots of photos to document the trip.

Not much else happening here, I just was so excited to see rain I had to share the news!

  1. Those fires are scary business. When we get the residual haze as afar away as Minnesota, I can't imagine what is being experienced there.

    1. We are so fortunate on the island, most of that smoke just whipped right over us due to the wind/being by the ocean. It is really hard for those with breathing problems in the interior.

  2. So glad you got some rain. I hope you get more on a regular basis to keep those fires at bay. You've made me realize that I don't have a bucket list. And really no idea what I would even put on one. What does that say about me. Either I'm happy with where I am or I'm very boring. lol.

  4. Sadly we had no rain here at all. How nice that your community is coming together to help those affected by the fires.

    1. I still cannot believe with how dry things are and so many fires right in Kelowna and nearby that your bloody neighbor washed his driveway with gasoline. What an idiot.

  5. How unusual for your weather to be so dry! Last year we had drought conditions here; this year rain rain and more rain! I have to keep tipping my flower pots over to drain out the excess! This is the only year that I've ever had to do that! So weird. Hope the rain helps with lots of those fires!! Have fun on your fishing charter - hope you get some salmon!

    1. Actually each summer in July and August we typically get almost no rain, every summer I have lived here (five now) it's been like this. Although not in the interior, they usually get more rain in summer.

  6. I, too, would get excited by rain right now. But it's rare here during summer. It drizzled for a minute and a half a few days ago!!!

  7. Seeing the damage of fire on TV is devastating. Rain is very welcomed there. Here in Toronto, we also have rain the forecast. I love to watch rain and listen to the music of rain... It is very interesting.

  8. That charter sounds like fun. I am sorry you are in such a drought -- we have the opposite problem here. To much rain and lots of flooding. I hope you catch a couple of big ones.

    1. Flooding is no good either, does almost more damage than fires sometimes. Send it our way!

  9. I'm so glad you got some rain. We down here in Washington State are dealing with fires all over once again and it is getting scary dry. I'm fearing a firestorm like we had last summer at this rate.

    1. We still have a lot burning but more people got to return home and some of the fires are now contained. I don't see any more rain in the forecast though

  10. Just watching the terrible fires in the South of France and Corsica. We saw a nasty one in Corfu, they really are terrifying. Good to hear that yours are under control.
    Have a wonderful trip! xxx
