Have You Ever Wanted to Live in France?

I follow a blog of two people from Britain who completely renovated a home in France that has not one but two houses on the land and could be used as a BNB with the 2nd home.  They wish to move to Portugal before Brexit goes through and have just reduced the price on the property.

For 92,000 Euro you get a newly renovated home plus revenue property.  That is the equivalent of  81,500 pounds or $105,000 USD or $136,000 CAD.  Just in case any of my followers are interested you should really check it out - and the full renovation was posted on the blog as everything was done correctly and to code.

One can dream, can't they?

  1. Who in their right mind hasn't wanted to live in France? Ha ha I am joking but wow, it would be fun to do for a year or two. I did live in Paris for two summers so your idea appeals to me. I am not moving though.

    1. Yeah, it takes the right person to move there but it is a nice idea, such a pretty town

  2. It's only easy if you can access EU citizenship.

My husband and myself were both born in EU countries and thought about relocating to southern Spain when I finish work.

Really look into the taxes, many nations can and will tax your Canadian income if you spend more than six months a year there.

Then there is the whole looking after the property if you return to Canada for prolonged periods.

You need to investigate inheritance laws as well.

We decided just to keep returning to Spain for longer periods without buying.

    1. I think many people do exactly that, rent to avoid the immigration/ownership headaches

  3. What a charming place! My next home is going to be near the granddaughter in the PNW. But the allure of owning something in France is strong.

  4. Lovely house! It would have to be the South for us, that part of France has the same weather as us! xxx

  5. We would never buy anywhere. The cost of maintenance is too high when you can rent for such a reasonable price outside of Canada.

    1. I agree, plus none of the headache associated with ownership like taxes/rules/caretakers when you are not there. We have talked many times about buying outside of Canada and still go back to renting to avoid all of it.

    1. I am sure it will, they are also selling their old home in the UK to make it all happen.

  8. I read that blog, too. Visiting would be enough for me. I have never had a desire to live any other place than the US even though I know some people do. Relocating from Britain to France is just a hop, skip, and a jump. Relocating from the US is more serious.

    1. I would relocate but not sure I would buy...would rather rent all over the world. Hubby couldn't hand the change though I don't think

  10. I am English, but have lived in S W France for the past 45 years. Anyone who is looking for peace and quiet, with a wonderful life-style, could consider a move.

  11. Im with many of the others. We lived in Europe for many years, but chose to rent, as renting in much of Europe is different than in the US (cant speak for Canada) cause in Germany mortgates are difficult to get and many folks rent for their lives. The best home we ever lived in was overseas. I have been looking to going back at least half the year, but would still rent.

    1. I tend to agree, wouldn't want to end up in ownership headaches unless I intended to live there foreever
