Tis The Season To Declutter

Ever since I discovered my 24 hour Facebook bidding site just over a year ago I've had an almost constant flow of items leaving the house.  42 household items were sold or lots of items (like DVDs), most of which were ear-marked for our next garage sale, and I bought and resold 20 items on my "money on the side" venture.  Only 2 items I bought for resale have not sold and I only have $3.50 money in them so will try 1 more time then donate them to one of my favorite thrift stores.

This constant state of declutter means that every time I open a cupboard I suddenly see items that no longer have a use in our household.  Take the two Cuisinart skillets above.  They are part of a set - the rest of which I use on a daily basis.  I prefer nonstick skillets so these were moved when we came here in 2012 and not been used since.  What drives me crazy is that I moved these to our new home.  We did use them a couple of times with our gas stove in our old home but our new home has an electric stove and so they have sat unused as are more difficult to clean.  I have just listed them for sale and there is already a bid -  by tomorrow afternoon they will be destined for someone else's household, hopefully to be used.

The money will go into my weekends away fund and we have already set aside a week off in August for us to get some R&R with the dog.  Now I just have to figure out where we will go!

  1. Those are some really nice pans! I love decluttering and have my next basket headed for charity re-sell.

    1. Feels good, doesn't it? My biggest accomplishment decluttering was the junk drawer though - nothing to sell there but lots to throw out.

  2. Well done. I've done some boxing up, and my plan is to utilize the city wide garage sale days the first weekend in May, with limited Friday morning and Saturday morning hours. If I come across something with real value, I might post that.

    1. I love shopping at city wide garage sales, with some towns here would do that.

  3. I adore our Facebook site. Our area one is good only for family/kid stuff, and it's really difficult to see household items, unfortunately. I may have to try eBay for some of the nicer household stuff.

Nice work getting rid of your items!

    1. They talked about separating ours into family/kid but most people want it for everything. You can't sell weapons, controlled substances, animals, or new items for resale (like jewelery) but you sell almost anything else. Even furniture shows up - I bought a great little bookshelf.

  4. I have a bag of things I want to take to the thrift store and keep adding until it is full. The trick is to take in more things than I bring home. - Margy

    1. That is the trick, although in January I have brought very little home. A .25 record and 1 book.

  5. Those are nice pans, but I would surely ruin a meal cooking with them. I'm a non-stick girl all the way. lol

    1. That's exactly why I am getting rid of it. I have one great non-stick wok and one large nonstick fry pan and that is enough.

  6. City wide garage sales? We have nothing like that. We do have car boots though is that the same?

    1. Car boot sales are the same thing. People tend to have large yards/driveways in North America so they tend to throw up a sign and have it in their driveways. Sometimes a town gets on board and they do it all in one day. Very great place to shop

  7. Ooh what is this 24 hour bidding thing...wonder if it's fruitful in Australia??

    1. A local group that people join in your town. You put a starting bid (can start at free if you want) and people bid it up - it ends exactly at 24 hrs and you sell for that amount. It works well as people who don't show up to pick the items up get removed from the group. I love it!

    2. I must check into this for our area too!!

  8. I cluttered our house with everything I shipped from my mother's. I've given away a bit but now have to declutter too. I'm not smart like you, however. I never make any money off my decluttering!

    1. I am not sure it would be quite as easy to resell stuff in Spain. The good news is you have lots of time for it

    2. Try your local ebay classifieds: http://www.ebay.es/rpp/segunda-mano

  9. I found Facebook selling group in my area. Haven't listed anything for selling. The site looks great though.
I have a steel pan just like the one you have. I use it on the electric stove all the time. When frying I make sure the pan is heated, then add oil and when the oil is really hot, I add stuff. That way it is easy to clean. If something burn, I boil some baking soda in it. Then it is easy to clean.
Oh an it can go on the induction stove to save money.

    1. Glad you found a local site, I end up checking it regularly although I buy 1/10th of what I sell on there

  10. A city garage sale seems like a good idea. I might ask at the municipality about organizing a plot for such an event let's say on the outskirts,or some other marginal site. In fact, some sort of market.

    1. They do that in England with car boot sales, I think it is a great idea.

  11. R&R with the dog - I love it and so will Buddy :) I wonder if London has a facebook page like that - I'll have to do a search. People will buy almost anything won't they? And you get a better return than selling at a yard sale.

    1. Way better return than at a yard sale, I would never have gotten $15 for these pans at a garage sale as that was the final price, although the girl still hasn't picked up but is supposed to do so Friday.

    1. I found a bunch more stuff in the garage today when I was moving stuff to get at drywall, perhaps more will be going out the door.

  13. There is a FB bidding site in your area? Awesome... We just have one where you set a price and someone buys it. But I was dreaming that a thing like Ebay would be possible. hmmm...

    1. It's actually pretty awesome, exactly 24 hours bidding then the bidders have 24 hours to message you and 72 hours after sold time to pick it up. If people don't abide by the rules they get kicked out so it pretty much eliminates no shows. Me and a neighbor use it all the time - great to shop on too

    2. I meant to say it's free, and has a few volunteer moderators. We have over 3000 people in the group in our valley, a group of 3 towns very close together
