Growing Season Ending

I picked the last of my tomatoes the other night and pulled out some of the geraniums in the flower bed as the weather is cooler and if it wasn't raining would likely be frosting.  I am not complaining since the middle of Canada (Saskatchewan) has seen its first massive snowstorm of the year.  So glad I don't live in a climate like that any longer.  We did have a big rain storm last night and fully expected a power loss, in the end the power did go out but for about 3 minutes in the middle of the night which woke hubby up when it came back on (I was already awake, insomnia).

I went to the grocery store this week to specifically to buy celery - and wouldn't you know it, the largest grocery store in town was completely out except for some very old wilty organic celery they were willing to sell me for $4 a bunch.  Forget it!  Yesterday as I was running errands for the business I stopped at the small grocery store by my house and managed to bet both a nice fresh bunch of lettuce (for our stuffing) and a head of broccoli all for the whopping price of $2.60.  The celery was $1.50 and broccoli was $1.10 - both prices I can live with.  Our town is small enough that this sidetrip cost me no extra gas and about 4 minutes of my time.  Well worth it to help stay on my grocery budget.

It is so nice to enjoy your own produce but gardening does take work.  We still are enjoying the last of our small baby potatoes, the rosemary is so overgrown I had to hack it back as the recycle man was coming yesterday and a tomato and pepper plant each were ripped out.   Next year I have decided to put in 6 tomato plants and no peppers.  Not sure about the potatoes, may try something else altogether.  My cilantro did poorly but it might have been the seeds.  This is weekend is Thanksgiving in Canada but we are going to have to work through in order to get away on Thursday for our trip to Gabriola Island.  We each need a body double for the amount of work we need to do before then.

I am not going to try to sell anything else off as I don't have time to schedule pickups so if I see anything under the house that needs to be auctioned I will set it aside to start building funds for the next adventure or something special on our trip to Greece.  The last item I sold was a puppy fence/gate and it went for $53.  I am pretty sure that that is close to what we paid for it brand new, possibly might have even paid less as I see a very similar one on amazon.ca for $44 with free shipping!  Some people lose their mind when bidding, but I am happy to take their money if they want it that badly.

If you live in Canada Happy Thanksgiving everyone and if you live anywhere else have a great weekend!

  1. I'd make a Keralan green tomato curry with that crop, mmmmmm!! Do you overwinter your geraniums? Like my Grandparents did, I always bring ours inside and keep them on the windowsill of an unheated room. they'll last forever.
    Have a fabulous weekend. xxx

    1. No we don't over winter our geraniums, no place to keep them but they are dead cheap if you buy them tiny in the spring, .99 cents each and they last so long I definitely get my money out of them.

  3. So jealous you guys get to garden! If I had access to my roof I would have a garden up there! It's definitely hard work and even a bit expensive but so relaxing and money-saving, too. Beautiful produce you have there!

    1. I only garden in some planter boxes hubby build down the side of the house, they do amazingly well in there. You need a balcony!

  4. Electricity out for 2 hours here. Always worry my hard earned veggies are going to spoil. Really must get a generator for the freezer and fridge. Looks like a weekend to stay inside and enjoy turkey dinner. Happy Thanksgiving.

  6. Happy Thanksgiving! I picked 5 lemons off of the ground today (from our tree, not randomly ;-)), and two tomatoes. We are also reaching the end of the season, although you wouldn't know it from the weather - 84 degrees today!

    1. That made me laugh:) I wish we could grow lemons and limes outside here. I go through about 5 limes a week - end up buying large bags of them at costco to keep the prices down. Beautiful weather!

    1. Thanks! We also managed to fit in a night out for a friend's birthday party Saturday night so not a total loss to working. You do what you have to do when you want time off next weekend :)

  9. Happy Thanksgiving to you too. My tomatoes didn't like the early rains and I had to strip the vines because of the black speckled fruit. Next year I'm going to grow mine in pots again to keep them away from splashing dirt, and close enough I can cover them during downpours if I'm home. I hate to lose them after all the work growing them. I had dreams of canning stewed tomatoes and tomato sauce for winter cooking. - Margy

    1. Sorry to hear about your tomatoes - mine are a bit protected under the overhang of the house so got lucky although no where near the bumper crop from last year.

You are just on top of everything-getting money for a trip, dejunking and making money from it(Anna has been telling me to sell our junk. You two would get along!).

    1. My life is so not perfect, lots of crapola I don't share on the blog. I do think I would make a good de-hoarder although would have a difficulty with the smells. After dealing with my Mom's downsize I have some good experience. She seems to part with things way easier than she used to (plus it is so much easier if I cart if off and donate it/sell it/trash it)

  11. Happy Thanksgiving! We had our meal today, but instead of turkey I went with a pork loin.

I'm fortunate to live in the part of Saskatchewan that didn't get as much snow, though we did get about 2-4 cms of the darn stuff. I'd pulled out all my annuals the weekend before except my potted mums. They and the pansies seem to have come through the cold and snow just fine.

Have fun on your trip to Gabriola.

    1. Late May and the first part of June, I've been but hubby hasn't so we are splurging and doing it this year, although it is still much cheaper than it was several years ago. Two dinners, you lucky girl! We are going for a long walk today as well, sunny finally!
