Planning, Scheming, and Dreaming

Sunset on Quadra Island July 2014
This week I have spent a lot of time scheming and dreaming.  Now that kid #4 has moved out we are free to travel again - except for furry kid #5 (Buddy the puppy, see prior post) who needs to be potty trained before we can have someone sit for him.  We intend to take the month of July off from working at our Company as it is the most beautiful weather on Vancouver Island.  We hope to do lots of beach walking, kayaking and relaxing.

Although I enjoy relaxing at home I love travelling even more.  There are funds that were originally saved for our cancelled trip to Mexico that have been percolating in the travel account - plus I keep adding more to it.

In the plans this year:
-at least 3 day trip to Tofino (taking dog with us)
-return to Taku resort on Quadra Island (taking dog with us)
-one out of country trip TBA (Greece?  France?  Ecuador?  Nicaragua? all possibilities - but must be paid for with cash saved)

We have also made another lifestyle change - bought a truck!  We paid cash and bought a 10 year old truck so we can - buy kayaks!  Yes, the money is quickly exiting the building but as we have no financial obligations other than a small amount of money to kid#4 who just moved out on her own until she is 18 or finishes highschool - it is financial freedom time.  No mortgage, no car payments, no paying interest to anyone.  This does not mean we are spending frivolously though.  When we dreamed of moving to Vancouver Island several years ago the dream always involved a truck, kayaks and a dog.  We now have two of the three and we are working on the kayaks in a couple of months.

Yes, we are still on a budget living within our means.  We just have a little more means and less bills. At some point it does pay to be frugal your whole life - freedom to do what you want when you want how you want!

  1. Exciting times! The whole point of being frugal in some parts of your life is so you can afford the things that really matter, you've got it totally right. x

    1. Exactly - if more people understood that they would quit whining about not having the newest latest greatest - that while they suck on their Starbucks coffee.

  3. My hubby wants a kayak so he can putter around Mobile Bay. I learned too late to live frugally, so I'm playing catch up. My goal is to get our bills so low that I don't have to work so much to pay them. I don't have the urge to travel. I just want to relax more, but that's a long way off right now. Unexpected expenses keep popping up.

    1. Relaxing is definitely a big thing - I hope you get to do more of that and some financial relief soon.

    1. It is - I hate to tell you this Jane but on Vancouver Island the irises are blooming - and it was plus 13 degrees celcius yesterday! You might have to wait a little longer than us though

  5. I have always want to see Nicaragua! I hope you so just so I can see the pictures!
I love to read about when people accomplish their goals. It is always so inspiring. Our only bill is the house payment which even though we pay every other week and make a few extra payments a year, it seems like it will take forever to pay off. And even if we do pay it off, I doubt that we will be able to afford to live in the Chicagoland area during retirement.

    1. I would love to go to Nicaragua but not sure hubby is on board - although he generally just lets me pick where we go as I am such a great holiday picker (and arranger I might add)

  6. YES!! There's a reason why we lived frugally for 30-40 years!! And I don't imagine you're going to totally give up your thrifty ways - it's just nice to be able to loosen up the wallet somewhat and enjoy the things you've been saving for!! Congrats - I love my truck :)

    1. I am thrifty down to the core, I am just making more decisions about what kind of spending actually makes us happy now. I will always be a penny pincher though :)

  7. We love to anchor in Drew Harbour out in front of the Taku Resort. Now that our boat doesn't have a dinghy, we pull anchor to go over to the Heriot Bay Inn to splurge on either a breakfast or dinner on the deck. In summer the anchorage can get pretty crowded, but if we go before July 4 or in late August through September, it is almost empty. We love it best then. - Margy
