Big Life Choices

We received some news from my 22 year old Stepson today.  His application to the Canadian Army has been processed and he is being hired as a crewman.  They usually work in/on tanks.  He gets shipped out February 13th to Quebec for his basic training.

As parents we are both excited for him and scared at the same time based on his chosen career.  This is something he has wanted for a very long time and it is finally happening for him.  We are trying to be supportive of his decision.  The Canadian Armed Forces is generally known for their peace keeping missions and we expect this is one way for him to see the world and gain some life experience.

In other news my friend Sonya Ann over at A Mom, Money and More has just released her new kindle ebook, Stratagem A Life Perceived.  You can download the book for free for the next five days.  You can also enter a contest to receive an amazon.com GC.

I am not posting this to get into the contest.  I am posting it because she is a darn funny person whose blog I have enjoyed reading for several years and I can't wait to read it as just downloaded it myself.  If you read it ensure you post a review on amazon.com.

  1. Good luck to your son and his new chosen profession. It will definitely be a way to see the world and help in areas in need such as when natural disasters occur and feel that he is helping to contribute when it is most needed. As you said luckily most of Canada's military help in peacekeeping duties and not combat. It is always a way to get a paid college or university education if he was to chose that route later on.

    1. Thanks! He actually wants to be a cop later in life - he is just too young right now to take him seriously and has been told it is much easier to become a cop with military experience. We have the money for education if he wants it but he wants military then to be a policeman.

    1. Thanks - it is a really big step. My 2nd eldest stepson is currently contemplating the same path although he has a degree so would be applying to a much different area.

  4. While I would be terrified if one of my kids wanted to go into the military service, I'd be supportive. I wish your son well - what an opportunity to see the world & experience new things.

    1. Fortunately, he did not join right out of highschool so we feel better about this decision. He has worked a couple of years at a good job and moved out on his own and is certain this is what he wants to do - so we know this is something he really wanted.

    1. It scares us too - but it is his life and we always said we would support the kids choices and we are trying too.

  6. Wayne was in the US Air Force followed by 20 years in the Air National Guard. He loved his military service, so it can be a wonderful career choice. - Margy

    1. My stepson always had an intense interest in the military, I recall buying him books on history and military back when he was 12 which he enjoyed thoroughly.

  7. I would too be worried and proud. It would be something that wouldn't leave your mind. But even if something did happen he wouldn't be on the front line if he was working on tanks. That thought would help me sleep a bit at night.
And thank you for the nod, I truly am grateful. Please, enter the drawing. You get 5 entries for posting about it. Just leave a separate comment for each.

  9. Good luck to your stepson. We have several members of our family who have served in various forces here in the UK [I think we can manage at least one in each of the RAF, Army and Navy] and I hope he does well and learns a lot from the experiences he is sure to gain x

    1. He is sure this is what he wants to do. Later in life he wants to be a policeman and this is one of the best ways for him to get to that goal.

  11. How long is a tour of duty these days? On a side note - my dad spent the end of the war in Comox playing semi-pro baseball :) Not a bad way to end the war! I hope training goes well and he enjoys his time safely.
