A Bundle of Joy - Furry Friday

So this little package of cuteness is coming to live with us next Thursday.  We have to decide on a name as his current one is a human name that we don't wish to keep so we will be changing it.  He was born on November 19th and is a miniature poodle.  That is his Dad's foot in the background.  His mom and dad are owned by a professional dog groomer (hence the fancy dog hairdo) who also breeds purebred poodles.  We met the whole family - and he comes from great parents with really nice personalities.

We had previously been on a list for a bichon as hubby has allergies so we are limited to what breeds would work and those are never ever at our rescues (*all my previous animals have been rescues - I believe in them but I also believe people with allergies should be allowed pets too).  Unfortunately, we have been waiting for several months with no news from the original breeder and several messages were left unreturned so we decided to start looking at other options.  I came across this little guy in an online ad and we drove 1.5 hrs away to see him last night.  He immediately walked right up to us and my heart melted.  Keep in mind, I was not in favor of a poodle.  All that I have met previously did not have the disposition of a dog that I wanted.  His family was completely different.  His dad was majestic and very friendly/happy and his mom very playful and happy.  The only reason he was available as the original senior lady who had put a deposit on him when he was born decided she was too old to deal with a puppy so he became available.  I brought a dog toy (one bought at Christmas time in anticipation of a puppy in our home one day) and he immediately decided he loved it.  We could have brought him home last night but our house is not yet ready yet so instead I will be picking him up Thursday.  He comes with his first shots and vet check and a year worth of dog grooming, although that is in a town 1.5 hrs away.

He is not fully potty trained yet, so there will be some work to be done but we are ready for that. As it is now official I decided to join in with Lorraine over at Clamco for Furry Friday, although this little cutie has hair and not fur I think no one will mind.

Any suggestions as to a name?  In all likelihood hubby will pick the name as all my suggestions have been shot down so far but feel free to share what you think he should be named.

Happy Friday!

  1. How about Murphy? Or maybe something French, like Pierre?

  2. Here's a link to French dog names - some of them are pretty good:

Your new little guy is just beautiful - I love poodles, my very best ever dog was a poodle. Well behaved, super smart, clean, no shedding, just a really good dog. You'll love having a poodle. Can't wait to see your Furry Friday photos - I think that's a great idea and might just do the same with my Katie's photos.

  3. I like names like Sebastian or Claude or Maurice...Poodles are usually a rather silly breed so I like when their name have a little dignity....

  5. How exciting. I can't wait to learn the name you choose. Our cats here had already been named by the shelter when we adopted them at 10 months. The names were already on their microchips and passports, so we decided to keep them and have come to feel they were appropriately named. We were able to rename one kitten we got in Las Vegas. We took her home, got to know her for a couple of days and she became Thelma. Don't know why, but it fit. Hopefully, your pup will give you a clue, too.

  6. So cute, I'm sure he will enrich your lives significantly. I've been thinking of using names of friends and family I rarely see, if the character traits fit. A way of having them in my life in some way.

  8. Thanks for the link/mention and for joining me in Furry Friday posts! The puppy is sooo cute!!! I have a hard time picking pet names as our pets rarely end up being called what we originally intended. The Muffin's original name was Honey and The Baby's original name was Lightning. We call Zoey Stinky Dog all the time. lol.

  9. I have to disagree strongly with the comment stating "poodles are rather a silly breed" . Most dog research indicates poodles as extremely intelligent dogs . I have two poodles and they are extremely intelligent , devoted companions .

    1. I don't mean unintelligent, rather I mean a little clownish with a great sense of humor! My mom had poodles and I loved their personalities dearly!

  10. I'm in a hotel and the Internet wasn't working well earlier. If you get multiple comments just delete the extras. Looks like a really great puppy. I bet waiting a week to pick him up. - Margy

  14. Yay, poodles! I have had four in my lifetime - three females and one male (a rescue!). Names were GiGi, Penny, Bebe, and Cookie. The first three were miniatures and the last one was a toy (male). Colors were - in order - Black, Apricot, Black, and Silver.

The abused rescue had a lot of problems and I had to hold him a lot, but the three girls were delights. I would choose another poodle (any size) in a heartbeat.

Best of luck - he will be a delight, I am sure! ;->

  15. Awwww, love your new fur baby! Once you get him home , you'll find a name. My fur baby was Ben, we had him for 15 yrs.

  16. How cute! I won't even attempt to offer a name suggestion...it would hardly be appropriate, considering the fact that my wonderful little Shih Tzu has been with me two years without being given a name. (Not the dog in my profile picture...that was my Lhasa Apso, Spencer, who was named even before I brought him home)
