My younger two Step-kids flew out for a few days and we have enjoyed
hanging out with them. We rented lots of movies, did some hiking by the
ocean and some thrifting. Remember those god-awful long sweaters from the
1980's with bright patterns that you grimace over when you see pictures of
yourself from that era? Well, so my Step-daughter tells me, the latest
fashion is to find the longest biggest ugliest comfy sweater and to wear them
over leggings. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you view
it) I have long since purged them from my wardrobe so we went thrifting.
She and I
used to go garage saling and to thrift stores so buying clothes in thrift
stores is nothing new to her. We found five new to her sweaters for $24.
No, I did not take any pictures as I try to allow the kids a bit of
privacy, and all I brought home were unopened 50 cup-cake wrappers for .25
cents. I normally pay $1 for 50 at the dollar store so they were a bit of
a bargain and something I use weekly for muffins. Everything comes back
in fashion, skinny jeans, leg warmers, ugly long sweaters, and leggings.
What is next? Spandex? I think LULU Lemon yoga pants fit
that category. Pat Benetar headbands? Madonna lace fingerless
gloves? So, if you have some of those 1980 ugly sweaters hanging out in
your closet, pass them on to your nearest 16 year old :)

I didn't keep any of mine either and wish I had - they weren't pretty but by George they were comfy!

DeleteI loved my big sweater! I wore lace gloves, Victorian boots and a fancy dress to a formal dinner once....ah....those were the days!

DeleteI think people would be surprised at how much you can find that is new with tags at thrift stores! I buy 80% of my daughters clothes from thrift stores. Majority of them new with tags, all designer stuff, Justice, Limited too, Old Navy, Childrens place etc...New stuff for a buck or two! You just cant beat that! I also get brand new shoes,sketchers for my daughter, Kenneth cole for my son. Brand spanking new (I am kinda weird and wouldn't buy used shoes) I love the thrill of the hunt!
ReplyDeleteI am with you on the shoes and only buy used shoes if they appear never to have been worn - or almost - and disinfect them immediately upon coming home. She was a little shocked to see guess jeans at this thrift store, unfortunately not in her side. I am such a fan of thrift shopping, fortunately she will always be able to clothe herself on the cheap.

ReplyDeleteI do have a couple of larger sweaters but she was going for the ugliest (her words) which I thought was kind of weird. She is very artsy (think eyebrow ring and burgundy hair) and it is bloody cold in Alberta - not sure how warm those leggings are there!
DeleteI loved the 80's, especially the music. I didn't wear leggings or leg warmers, but I wore tight straight leg pants with a long men's style button down shirt and red capezio shoes. (I was more a fan of The Cars, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello and The Ramones, not Madonna). All the hair bands were great too.

Heartbeat City! I loved the Cars. I leaned towards slightly harder rock myself - absolutely never Madonna or Michael Jackson. She also seems to be wearing a lot of plaid long shirts, I remember wearing those in highschool too.
DeleteI told Anna, "been there and done that." About the long sweater and leggings. Ahhhh brings back 8th grade memories. Not wearing leggings again-feel free to thank me for that.
